We bid goodbye to a year that was not kind, by conjuring all the kindness possible. But quietly, under our breath.
I have never been more fully in service of my family and others than now. It looks and feels nothing like what I thought. All I can say is so many of my gaps have been filled. I still have a preoccupation with gaps - the fissures within the self. That’s what drives me to reflect and create, to express and write. It’s the essence of being human, I suppose. But oh what grace it is to know the closing between desire and fulfilment on a personal plane. For that I am ever grateful to my family.
Thank you @mommygrapher for running alongside us on Ashwem beach to capture these images that say everything.

I found this image from two years ago when I was in Dubai. It speaks to me as I’ve been introduced to a Mudita practise that feels very cleansing and purifying. Mudita, or appreciative joy, is the antidote to emotions such as jealousy, inferiority and thinking, ‘why don’t I have that?’ It’s also the lazy person’s path to enlightenment as my teacher @nithyashanti says with a grin. Visualise someone who has qualities that you admire or perceive that you lack: strength, discipline, happiness, prosperity, luck. Send them Mudita, visualise it flowing from your heart. What you appreciate appreciates, so as you exercise your warm, open hearted joy for others, the same qualities you appreciate will grow in you. It takes a bit of time and patience to rewire our stories of being a victim, of not being dealt the best cards in the deck. But the rewards to practising Mudita can transform the quality of your experiences and ultimately life.

A scrapbook of our stay @kumarakomlakeresort
……
It’s stunning yes. The kids have discovered pottery and weaving skills, yes. We take meandering walks as a family, and I actually get time to read and contemplate our next adventure. But, wait, more.
Deeply nourishing, healing ayurvedic treatments of hot, medicinal oil are transmitted directly from Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, to the hands of the women ministering to me each day. The sun setting over Lake Vembanad while we gather in reverent silence to watch. Dream like days rippling over the water. Coconut- oil, water, malai, cream – rimming your other dreams. Crisp white lungis and lurid cosmopolitans. I could go on and on but really, to be visited by any more thoughts runs counter to the mission: homeostasis and an easing into that restorative bowl of silence we all carry.

I was telling Maneesha in all honesty that the sunset backwater cruise around the beautiful little island on which @kayalislandretreat is situated is the most scenic and peaceful in all of Kerala. The girls loved it too, but next time i need a replenishing time in pristine surroundings I’ll stay at #Kayal with hubby and leave the girls at a bigger resort – maybe that’s something you should consider as well to the moms out there ☺️ here’s looking at you @brooklynmamainmumbai
Thank you Maneesha and team ❤️
Compliments of the Season to all of you from us. Aguada Fort, Goa, India
Thank you @sripeepul @sourslice for ushering in this new year with ancient rhythms and traditions, yet pulsing with fresh hope – and not a little madness and joy.
Thank you @govindamangalamheritage for hosting 🙏🏼❤️🎉

Just signed a stack of #ClosetotheBone at @otterbooksinc in Nelson BC. Give them a shout if you’re interested in a signed copy (but please be patient due to the Xmas rush) Given that live book tours are on hiatus, I’m grateful to my local indie bookstore for shipping to readers around North America 🙏🏼

A sampling of reading perches @kumarakomlakeresort
(Also part of my on going investigation whether this place is as magical at all hours as at dusk)
The artistry and creativity in contemporary India nourish me when I need it.
I can’t explain why this image moves me but it does. I’ve been feeling like a chaatak pakshi, the bird who waits for the rains, upturned beak to the skies : this mythical bird only drinks drops from the clouds before they splash to earth.
I turn to modern Indian graphic and interdisciplinary artists when the soul is parched and in need of quenching.

NEW YEAR
NEW STORY
‘Change does not happen without imagination. May we
envision a shared world of replenishing abundance. May all beings be released from ignorance and unnecessary suffering!!”
Laura Simms

I loved sharing my life lessons on resilience and how difficulties can lead to a personal awakening. | ‘I inhabit truth much better than the masks. I would rather stand here and display my wounds.’ No matter how deep or how ugly they may be | #SHRMIAC19 @thrive_india @marcusranney @shrmindia Taj Palace, New Delhi
At the end of this year rimmed with sadness, I find myself practising radical gratitude so hard. The fact I managed to write a book, release it and the generosity of readers in reading and sharing still – almost two years later- makes my heart judder. #closetothebone is just the beginning of my writing path, as I reach inside myself and for the page at the same time. May I never be nonchalant about the things that matter. May you do the same ❤️🙏🏼

This is the story of Lisa Ray, one of India’s first supermodels. An unflinching, deeply moving account of her nomadic existence: her entry into the Indian entertainment industry at sixteen; her relationship with her Bengali father and Polish mother; life on the movie sets and her brush with the Oscars; her battle with eating disorders; being diagnosed with multiple myeloma at thirty-seven; her spiritual quest; lovers and traitors, mentors and dream-makers; and the heartaches and triumphs along the way.
(Goodreads described it perfectly)

Not gonna lie, I picked it up partly because I was looking for a cancer survivor story, but this one had only a few chapters towards the end dedicated to it. Nevertheless, the book has so much more to offer, that it made the entire experience even better.

Repost from @black_bird_00000 using @RepostRegramApp – [Pl & Eng] To jest najważniejsza książka, która przeczytałam w 2021. Uwielbiam czytać autobiografie, a ta jest wyjątkowo dobrze napisana i wydaje się faktycznie aż do szpiku kości szczera. Opowieść o skomplikowanych relacjach rodzinnych, życiu z bulimią, walce z rakiem i karierze gdzie np. gaża wypłacana była jej w gotówce zapakowanej w plastikowe torebki z supermarketu. 💫 *** This is the most important book I’ve read in 2021.I love reading autobiographies and this one is very special – truly well-written and indeed close to the bone honest. It talks about complicated family relationships, living with bulimia, fighting cancer and an extraordinary career where for example Lisa was paid in cash brought to her in supermarket plastic bags. Sometimes you feel this connection with someone you don’t even know, a strong connection to their story – it’s a great experience for the reader but I guess it’s also every writer’s goal. A truly special book! ✨ #bookstagram #czytamksiążki #książka #książki #lubimyczytać #kochamczytać #bookstagrampolska #poczytaj #najlepszaksiążka #recenzja #reading #books #bookoftheyear #closetothebone #lisaray

(for the perpetual reader)
My third or possibly fourth read of this spellbinding lamentation by Louise Gluck, named after a small crater lake in southern Italy regarded by the ancient Romans as the gateway to the underworld.
‘Winter will end, spring will return.
The small pestering breezes
that I so loved, the idiot yellow flowers-
Spring will return, a dream
based on a falsehood:
that the dead return.’
I started reading this on the flight back to Mumbai and it’s so damn good. @caseyschwartzy blends her own personal history of struggling with an Adderall addiction with an examination of the universal call on our attention in the modern world – as the slip cover says, it grapples with the essential questions of attention: what is it? How do we conserve it? And what else is lost when we give it away? 😳
Brilliant reporting from the age of distraction frontline, this is the most timely and provocative read I’ve been gifted in a long time. Thanks @maneesha_panicker
I know what read I’m ordering next after an enchanted stay in the backwaters of Kerala ❤️
