I’m furious. I’m scared for our daughters and trans men. I’m scared for already marginalized communities. I’m scared for the desperate that will seek unsafe abortions. I’m scared this will lead to women being imprisoned for miscarriages. They told us we were overreacting with these SCOTUS nominations, looking at you Kavanaugh and Supreme Court Handmaid, but we were right to be. The radical Christian Right is chipping away at our freedoms. Marriage equality will be next. If you don’t agree with abortions, don’t get one. If you don’t believe in marriage equality be straight and mind your business. We don’t want to take anything away from you. We want access for everyone. So if god forbid something should ever happen to you or someone you love, they have access to safe healthcare. Nasty nonsense comments will be deleted, you will be blocked and never thought of again. You’re wasting your time, if you agree with this decision I already don’t respect you. EXPAND THE COURT AND DO AWAY WITH LIFETIME APPOINTMENTS! We weren’t overreacting. They want to send us back to the times we had to hide who we are. They want to strip the rights of people they consider “other.” Religion has no place in our government. Religious extremists have no place in our government and certainly not in the highest court in the land. They need to be removed and should be barred from office. We condemn religious extremists in other countries forcing women to act and dress a certain way and never look at ourselves and what we are doing to the people in this country who aren’t cisgendered, straight and white. Those of you for whom color, religion, geography did not matter. Those of you who saw the child in need. Faten was burned in 2013 when she was just five years old, from an airstrike. Over the years, neither she nor her parents wanted to stop her education, but when she was younger it was extremely hard on her. The words and stares of others cut deeply. Now that she’s older she can stand up for herself, she’s built up those internal defenses against rhetoric and glares. If only she had had the support she needed from the start. If only there was a reaction to what her country was going through that was more powerful, more decisive than the little that actually transpired when it came to Syria. The response to Ukraine has shown that we can mobilize clothes, transport, food, and warm shelter to those fleeing war. It has shown that there is money, whether from the stranger moved by events or governments. It has shown that harsher measures can be put into place to punish the aggressors. And yes it has shown the West’s bias towards who it is that is fleeing or being bombed. What if we/the West had reacted like this to Assad and Putin’s bombings in Syria? Would Putin have been so emboldened as to invade Ukraine? What if we had shown this level of kindness and compassion for those fleeing? Would children like Faten have suffered less? It is perhaps easy to say “what if”, and to a certain degree pointless. What has happened has happened. I am heartened by the response to Ukraine because it shows what we are capable of. I am gutted because it underscores an ugly reality. We are more inclined to help those who we “think” or “perceive” to be more like us. The children of one conflict do not have to suffer at the expense of the children of another. So lets build a world where we don’t have to plead for the finances to support non-white, non-European children. Repost from @arwacnn • I’ve witnessed how war can rip a child’s life apart; how spaces that should be “safe” – like a child’s bed – no longer are and what that does to a child’s psyche. The pain of losing a parent or sibling; of seeing friends blown to shreds; the mangled mess of a classroom; the confusion of seeing a parent’s panic, of having that solid figure in their life disintegrate and then try to build themselves up; of losing that sense of “home”, with all its warmth and security. There are so many layers to trauma borne out of conflict. Trauma is unique to every individual but treatment in children is particularly complex and requires specialized expertise. At my charity @inaraorg we have that. The earlier it is addressed the better the outcome. As an immediate response to the impact of the war in Ukraine, we will be providing direct training and mentoring support to mental health professionals, social workers, and others hosting displaced children. We will also facilitate fundraising and logistics for small organizations hosting vulnerable children, such as orphans, to enable them to meet their needs. We will keep this under continuous review as we seek to better understand the gaps left by the wider international response and identify where the expertise of INARA can best add value to that effort.
