Don’t say I didn’t warn ya 🙌🏽 Also, does this emoji 🤌🏽 make you think of the side head of a brachiosaurus? Of rugged coastlines and long arm selfies. Life can be a beach after all. The return to mother 🌊 short lived but so essential 😌 Cooper’s Beach Ready for closing night at @melbfashionfestival.. wearing @jasongrech @jeanettemaree @tonybianco, styled by the beautiful @styledbybloom_ ❤️ The night that kept giving 💃🏽💃🏽 Thank you @melbfashionfestival, @graemelewsey, @david_briskin, @ampr_group and the entire team for a magical re entry into the world of watching beauty unfold on a live runway. And congratulations for being the first in the world back on stage! It was such a joy to see models of all ethnicities represented in such glorious fashion! @jasongrech – after 6 weeks of playing a blood stricken action lady, it was so special to don some sparkles ✨ Only a few weeks ago but so far away. 🌊☀️ Nearly time to leave these shores 🌊 Australia T’was a night of bittersweet magic. Stepped out in this piece by the wonderful @bibhumohapatra to honour and raise resources for those fighting India’s covid plight. Thank you @indiaspora @1billionbreaths_ @basuratnam and all the organisers (@shrutirya) for creating a shared sense of community here in NYC. We rejoiced in seeing old friends, in coming together after so long, but also felt our mutual pain, longing and ache around what’s happening in our homeland. Over $400,000 was raised towards India’s covid relief efforts. As the Aussie-Indian amongst the American-Indian diaspora, I was reminded of the power of community and shared heritage – bonds based on love – which can achieve so much when like-minded souls unite. But sometimes things get blocked along the way. When a trauma cycle takes over… breath becomes stuck, the body freezes. Movement and dhyaan have always brought me home. It’s time to go back. ❤️ 📸 @rubybell You have to wonder at the brain which enables a person to leave the places that the hearts feel safe and the soul at peace. … incidentally also the sort of places where you might willingly take a selfie up your own snooch. Toronto, Ontario Too lip or not too lip. 🌷 Are you asking the question #whomademyclothes when you purchase something new, when you fall into the habitual pattern of unconscious consumption? It’s always #fashionrevolutionweek at my house…. I seldom buy anything new, encourage wardrobe departments I work with to use sustainable garments and by back clothes after a shoot to donate or reuse them in a conscious manner. Our fast fashion habits are unravelling but not nearly fast enough. The fashion industry is one of the world’s greatest pollutants, and has also historically been a centre point for the use of cheap, unfair labour practices. Join the #fashionrevolution, ask the right questions every time you think to wear and buy. ❤️ @fashionrevolutionindia @fash_rev 📸: @rubybell Pancho Vida 🍑 #tonyknows Shiv ji’s magic was out in full force today 🌊 Look, SOMETIMES we take a good photo. For those who weren’t there… you were so immensely missed… the cast and crew still in Canada and other parts of the USA. I feel so grateful to be able to share in community and laughter right now. I realise how lucky this is and will never again take it for granted. …And yes, that’s Ray from Schitt’s creek with his eyes closed ya’ll! (Don’t kill me Riz!) So much is happening – all the time. We are inundated with doom through our addiction to knowing and being on top of news cycles. It’s a good thing – to be aware, to realise that we are one of billions, that our lives are interconnected and inextricably linked, to feel the pain of others because we are indeed one. But in and amongst it we are here – in our avatars of individuality – to feel joy, to feel love and to be free. Many of us have access to this but don’t choose it – out of guilt, fear, addiction to performance, or a capitalist rat race. The last few weeks have reminded me of childlike wonder, the power of being and not doing and the transience of societal goals and milestones that many of us are so conditioned to chase. In play, love and laughter our humanity most naturally resides. Wishing you all an ananda filled week, whatever the external world presents today. I realise that my surrounds are currently magical, but I hope to inhabit this magic no matter what the scenery might next be ❤️🙏🏽 Three more days of the month of the fish. Desert dreaming 🐪 Just did my first yoga class taught in Spanish & gotta say, the El Prana is El Pulsing 🇲🇽 feeling some El Gratitude 🙏🏽 ….(sorry) Get lost. Get found. The motto of my favourite yoga studio in LA @roamlosangeles… took their advice these last few months 💖 First night back in the big smoke and I basked in the privilege of catching up with the funniest humans in Australia. I had the recent pleasure of performing with and being directed by these stalwarts as the lead in their upcoming audio comedy SLUSHY – 2 of my most joyous working weeks. They trusted me with their hilarious script and affirmed my life long proclamation that I too am a very funny lady. Also gave me some solid mates in, well, themselves. All very good things. 🎭👩🏾🎤🦹🏻♀️ 🦸🏼♀️ 🐍 @katemccartney @katemclennan Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Lattice & Jants, Good wibes to all off you foower veek ahead, I rully dig this pants 💕 Sun Smart. Sun Daze. Stickler for those big mounds of earth ⛰ As a wee thing a decade ago, I shot the climax of my first indie feature at this fountain. Today I came back, after dancing the morning out, to reflect on the journey which has been and that which continues to grow. To reflect on the time when, as ‘brown actors’, we were told that our space is limited and our choices few and far between. I feel the rumblings of change, and feel grateful that I’ve mustered the resilience to stick to a path that originated as a childhood, fantasy: ‘When I grow up, I want to be an actress!’, I would exclaim. At the time, I only envisaged it was possible in the shape of a kohl-laden maiden in the fields of Bollywood filmdom…and so I mustered courage and chased that wondrous world. But the realities of being the child of the diaspora caught up with me, and my journey took a sharp u-turn into a more confused but equally courageous quest towards being seen as a human before my colour. And so here I sit, wondering when the us and them of who we are will finally evaporate and stories will just be stories for all of us to equally tell and celebrate. Central Park, New York Morning stares at an abundant world. Collecting my scars and making them art as I go. As many have in this glorious country. Happy Independence to #Mexico… thank you for sharing your wonders with me. 🇲🇽❤️🙏🏽 Lawyer? Fluent in French? Kinda known actor? ‘Nahhhi – girl can make khichadi!’ Ps – there’s a bug on my face. #bigflex Happy Valentines Day to all of you. The sun, the sand, the water and the abundance of an open heart – I’m so grateful to have found ME! ✨ Adulting seems to be about crushing my shitty fears, finding a patch of bitumen and squatting down on it like a Queen. 📸 @piercarthew Oh G’day, WA 🙋🏽♀️ Cottesloe, Western Australia, Australia Being a young girl and woman of colour born & brought up in Australia, I was brazen, bold yet often beaten down in unseen ways. It was the same for my mother in her various roles in the academic world (she’s a badass professor yo). I chose excellence at every turn. It was the only way to be accepted – to be good at everything with which I tasked myself. And yet, when I was entering the workforce as an adolescent, the ceilings became clear. I was always the anomaly in the room; brazen, bold AND brown was too much, it was unpalatable. When I moved to India, I was often told to keep my education quiet (the one I worked aeroplane balls to the wall for) because ‘a smart actress is a difficult one, a threatening one’. When I pushed back, I was wrist slapped and shushed. And so I did shush for a time. My spirit was dampened, my dreams felt decimated… until I found the strength to rise again. Being back in Australia my task is simply to make sure that I can be present for others in the way that no one was present for me – in those moments when merit goes out the window and bias takes over. When the system which was never designed for our success presents one of its opaque road blocks. I’m a work in progress, and the vicissitudes which have defined my journey thus far serve as lessons from which I’m constantly learning. I’m not special, I’m not unique… I simply belong to the courageous cohort comprised of all women world over. Each with their own story, their own struggle, their own gumption to push forth despite the different avatars of roadblocks attempting to get in their way. Here’s to all of us… the mothers, sisters, daughters, soldiers, speakers, homemakers, doers who constantly inspire and teach me that I’m not alone, that meaningful change is around the corner because we share in a desire for it to exist. The change that will mean that we can go from constantly pushing to simply being. #internationalwomensday is for all of us, however we identify. Today and everyday I celebrate my personal womanhood, and the global sisterhood I have found and cherish on this journey. (Ps: photo is BTS of a recent publicity shoot where I absolutely slayed) Happy Holi everyone! May your year be filled with nature’s rainbow 🌈 Where lockdown took me a year ago. It can take you there too. #retrogradetv still streaming on @abctv in Australia! This awesome show won an award for outstanding comedy ensemble at the Equity Awards this year… that means it’s very funny. Folks in Aus, go on… be transported to that magical time that was March 2020. 9 balloons. 9 sacred nights. May the spirit of Goddess Durga awaken the shakti which resides in us all. Happy Navratri! For those wondering, the Navratri (Nine Nights) festival in the Hindu calendar is one of the most auspicious times of the year. I spent my childhood in Melbourne attending Garba (a Gujarati dance form) nights at this time and my time in Mumbai visiting the Pandals (Shrines) around Bandra. Spirituality and community are so interlinked at this time. I feel indebted to my rich culture and Vedic history for its teachings. 🙏🏽❤️ #durgapuja #navratri My honour was not yielded but conquered merely. Fitzroy, Melbourne Happy Birthday to my Star Pa! Prof Sharda remains the coolest dad on the block (I mean – holder of the largest collection of hardware tools and camping gear, possessor of encyclopaedic knowledge of films from across the ages, penner of exceptional Hindi poetry, original utterer of an old school Hindi Phatta/dad jokes, most available confidante there was!). I loved spending time with you in Melbourne last year after so long. I know one of your secret joys is talking to our wonderful South Asian cabbies about my films that they have seen… but I have to admit, one of my joys is discovering your ex students peppered around every corner of Melbourne and being discovered once again as ‘Dr Nalin Sharda’s daughter?!’ Love you papa, thank you for breathing wind beneath my wings always. Tonight I had dinner with two blokes…. One of whom couldn’t bring himself to admit that ‘Australia has a racist past’. His arguments against this premise were filled with qualifiers and feelings of being blamed and victimised as a white man who fears for his ilk. He said that racism had nothing to do with the way in which this land was taken from its rightful inhabitants – that that’s what people did at that time. I was at a loss. While trying to speak about the general practices of colonialism, I reminded him that until 1973 Australia had a ‘White Australia policy’. That migrants of colour who arrived in the wake of its abolition continued to feel the ripple of its effects. It often makes these conversations hard, when I am made to feel guilty for pointing out my own experiences, those of my parents and those of so many that I know and have witnessed. Experiences which simply ask for acknowledgment. Our present is inextricably linked to our history, to deny what we have inherited from our forebears removes context for a robust conversation today. #sherniisback …Never Gonna Happen! Was there ever a cuter meet cute in an Indian-American rom com coming to @netflix on August 4th? Thanks for dropping this exclusive clip of #weddingseasonfilm @variety 🕺🏽😎 Been a long road (and the path continues)… grateful to have been able to grow out my brows and beard and have a few fleeting solo moments with Mother Earth amidst the hullabaloo of shoot days, emails, daily nostril invasion, a summer that saw no sun – all the unimportant stuff that came to govern my societal living this year despite my soul yearning otherwise. I’m still dusting off my travel boots; but it’s funny how being back on the road – being a tiny insignificant speck – always brings me back to myself… and then – if I’m lucky – in touch with other wandering, wondering souls for an epic combustion of energy. Take care of your nervous systems, drink some haldi (🟡) chai, get that breathwork in – stay alive guys – it’s all we can really do!🕺🏽✌🏽 ✨ Also – @delta – VERY appreciative of the Indian Aunty’s voice on your safety video!!!! When mama comes to town and catches her little dancer down at the beach doing her thing 🏖 💙 PS. Sometimes yoga is better when I don’t have to hear a chorus of mispronounced Naaaamaaaaastaaayysss…. ….Nah, Ima a goooooo. On pose et puis on rit 💃🏽 On pose et puis on rit 💃🏽 On pose et puis on rit 💃🏽 On pose et puis on rit 💃🏽 On pose et puis on rit 💃🏽 Coming to the end of an epic 5 month journey… experiencing Australia in a ‘post’ covid era has been a ride. A largely sunless Sydney summer, torrential rains, flooding, an incredible group of fellow artists, the realisation that this country is still sadly segregated in so many ways, and the personal milestone of being an empowered Indian-Australian woman on screen. It’s been a time of action, but one of immense reflection and learning about my personal boundaries in not standing for the ones that society continues to set in both overt and subtle ways. It’s a also been a time of reflection on the messaging I received through my educators, as my Australian education is something as I count as my greatest boon. When I was 18 I was told at a drama school class that being a brown woman on Aussie screens was impossible. It’s taken a decade now of overturning that limitation. I would like to say a big 🖕🏽to the teacher who told me so, and created a limiting belief in my adolescent self. More importantly though, a massive 🙌🏽 to the many teachers throughout school and University who thankfully taught me that the sky isn’t even a limit. And then the absence of tiramisu on the menu became a double fisted dilemma. 📸 @miskojewellery My mama, my life. #HappyMothersDay Love! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ That’s what the this past year has been!
