I’m taking it to reflect on my inner child, my inner little girl – who still rages despite the quietening inherent in adult societal living. ‘Rages’ is an interesting word, in modern parlance it signifies free expression – but in reality so much of this can be performative in a culture now predicated on showing; a portrayal of expression as opposed to the raw, unadulterated howling of that inner child which for some has been burdened under layers and layers of quietening, the need to be ‘good’, ‘compliant’, undisturbed. I have been watching on as the women of Iran express their rage, as they scream from their sacral depths and heave their utter despair at being quashed, pushed, annihilated. This rage is important; its expression even more so. For the energy to be summoned, for change to occur societally, but for the healing in our bodies that have been told for years to keep it calm, keep it low, keep it simply going. There are infinite limbs to what it means to be woman; they are each seeded by freeing that little girl within. ☄️ 📸 @milighosh

Caption : So much is happening – all the time. We are inundated with doom through our addiction to knowing and being on top of news cycles. It’s a good thing – to be aware, to realise that we are one of billions, that our lives are interconnected and inextricably linked, to feel the pain of others because we are indeed one. But in and amongst it we are here – in our avatars of individuality – to feel joy, to feel love and to be free. Many of us have access to this but don’t choose it – out of guilt, fear, addiction to performance, or a capitalist rat race. The last few weeks have reminded me of childlike wonder, the power of being and not doing and the transience of societal goals and milestones that many of us are so conditioned to chase. In play, love and laughter our humanity most naturally resides. Wishing you all an ananda filled week, whatever the external world presents today. I realise that my surrounds are currently magical, but I hope to inhabit this magic no matter what the scenery might next be ❤️🙏🏽

Caption : What a year you were 2022! Started the first days of the year on the set of what, in December, went on to become an award winning Aussie drama series (ya’ll seen The Twelve!?). Everything in between was a WILD ride. Not all of it was good and easy and salty ocean dipped…. But that’s life… and I’m so grateful to still be on the journey. So here’s a little summary (a little later than most) of my 2022 JOY. With it comes a heartfelt thank you to the souls who joined in to dance, laugh, cry, ruminate and hold space, a thank you for the learning and a thank you for that positive energy that always somehow found it’s way back. LIST OF SOME GOOD THINGS: dancing, making art, tears with a scene partner, old friends, laughing, hugs, jokes, more jokes, new friends, dancing on rooftops, speaking about the future of India and Australia on the tele (yes nerd!), talking intercultural storytelling at Vivid with some Aussie acting greats, strutting in couture, promptly changing into cotton pyjamas, the Americas, community building, leading a film which aced representation (ya’ll seen Wedding Season!?), alone time, jamming in the car, chancing upon a Gurdwara during a morning walk in Los Feliz, dorbiiiii, bookstore arvos, jungle walks, ocean dips, yoga on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Climate Summit in the Galapagos with legendary humans, planting trees, hitched up lehengas and barefoot dance floors, Asian Excellence, thought leaders, Ayurvedic eating, sustainability learning, zero fast fashion, social entrepreneurship, HALDI, pranayama, mini ego deaths, getting it wrong, surrendering past stories, making way for new ones, returning to Melbourne to eat mamas rotis ….MORE DANCING! 2023 LESSGOOO! 🧡🕺🏽🙏🏽

Caption : As a wee thing a decade ago, I shot the climax of my first indie feature at this fountain. Today I came back, after dancing the morning out, to reflect on the journey which has been and that which continues to grow. To reflect on the time when, as ‘brown actors’, we were told that our space is limited and our choices few and far between. I feel the rumblings of change, and feel grateful that I’ve mustered the resilience to stick to a path that originated as a childhood, fantasy: ‘When I grow up, I want to be an actress!’, I would exclaim. At the time, I only envisaged it was possible in the shape of a kohl-laden maiden in the fields of Bollywood filmdom…and so I mustered courage and chased that wondrous world. But the realities of being the child of the diaspora caught up with me, and my journey took a sharp u-turn into a more confused but equally courageous quest towards being seen as a human before my colour. And so here I sit, wondering when the us and them of who we are will finally evaporate and stories will just be stories for all of us to equally tell and celebrate.

Caption : Being a young girl and woman of colour born & brought up in Australia, I was brazen, bold yet often beaten down in unseen ways. It was the same for my mother in her various roles in the academic world (she’s a badass professor yo). I chose excellence at every turn. It was the only way to be accepted – to be good at everything with which I tasked myself. And yet, when I was entering the workforce as an adolescent, the ceilings became clear. I was always the anomaly in the room; brazen, bold AND brown was too much, it was unpalatable. When I moved to India, I was often told to keep my education quiet (the one I worked aeroplane balls to the wall for) because ‘a smart actress is a difficult one, a threatening one’. When I pushed back, I was wrist slapped and shushed. And so I did shush for a time. My spirit was dampened, my dreams felt decimated… until I found the strength to rise again. Being back in Australia my task is simply to make sure that I can be present for others in the way that no one was present for me – in those moments when merit goes out the window and bias takes over. When the system which was never designed for our success presents one of its opaque road blocks. I’m a work in progress, and the vicissitudes which have defined my journey thus far serve as lessons from which I’m constantly learning. I’m not special, I’m not unique… I simply belong to the courageous cohort comprised of all women world over. Each with their own story, their own struggle, their own gumption to push forth despite the different avatars of roadblocks attempting to get in their way. Here’s to all of us… the mothers, sisters, daughters, soldiers, speakers, homemakers, doers who constantly inspire and teach me that I’m not alone, that meaningful change is around the corner because we share in a desire for it to exist. The change that will mean that we can go from constantly pushing to simply being. #internationalwomensday is for all of us, however we identify. Today and everyday I celebrate my personal womanhood, and the global sisterhood I have found and cherish on this journey. (Ps: photo is BTS of a recent publicity shoot where I absolutely slayed)
