For peacefully criticizing repressive state policies, activist Fatemeh Sepehri is in the Iranian city of Mashhad’s Vakilabad Prison, where her health has deteriorated, according to the Committee Following the Status of Detainees. The committee reports that in recent weeks, Fatemeh has lost more than 30 pounds and experienced abdominal bleeding since May 13.
Political prisoners in Iran including elderly inmates are singled out for harsh treatment, which often includes denial of medical care. The threat of withheld medical care has also been used as an intimidation tool against prisoners who have challenged the authorities or filed complaints.
