Last night the @appletvplus Black Bird family reunited to celebrate our Golden Globe nomination for best limited series, as well best performance nomination for @taron.egerton & a win for @paulwhausergram, one of the most humble, talented & deserving people on this planet. I looked around our massively talented table. I look a few tables over & I see Steven Spielberg & Angela Basset & so many others I’ve grown up admiring. How did this happen? These moments of celebration come after years and years of hard work & never giving up through life & career challenges, sure, but I never fool myself into thinking I’m more special than anyone else out there who’s just as hard working & talented & perseveres no matter what. I often ask myself, why me?
So many of my parents’ closest friends and family were murdered by the Islamic Republic. In 1984 my parents were forced to flee Iran. They spent years with my sister moving from refugee camp to refugee camp all over Turkey & Germany. I was born in one of those camps in Germany. We were finally able to come to the U.S. & build a home that resembled home, but never fully felt like home.
