I often ask myself, why me? So many of my parents’ closest friends and family were murdered by the Islamic Republic. In 1984 my parents were forced to flee Iran. They spent years with my sister moving from refugee camp to refugee camp all over Turkey & Germany. I was born in one of those camps in Germany. We were finally able to come to the U.S. & build a home that resembled home, but never fully felt like home. Caption : Iconic actor Taraneh Alidoosti (Oscar-winning film The Salesman) was arrested at her home on Saturday for an @instagram post to her 8 million followers in which she criticized the Islamic Republic for imposing the death penalty on protesters after the first execution of #IranRevolution & said, “His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organization who is watching this bloodshed & not taking action is a disgrace to humanity.” She’s being held at the notorious Evin Prison. In November, she also posted a picture of herself without mandatory hijab, holding a piece of paper reading “ژن ژیان ئازادی” (Women Life Freedom). I’m proud to be part of a coalition artists worldwide standing in solidarity with Taraneh. Caption : Over the moon for my beloved friend @chefnasrinlove who just opened her first restaurant #NasrinsKitchen in NY! 🥹 Her cooking is out of this world & she just happens to be one of the kindest, loveliest people on earth. 😍 Nasrin was forced to flee Iran w/her three beautiful kids in 2014. They stayed in Turkey for two years before coming to NY. After a rough period living in a shelter, she joined the phenomenal team of refugee chefs from all over the world at @eatoffbeat (where we met in 2018–see second photo!) She later told me she was excited to meet me because she didn’t speak much English at the time & didn’t know many Farsi speakers so when we met, she burst into tears (as did I!) & we held each other as we talked & talked & talked.
