Over the moon for my beloved friend @chefnasrinlove who just opened her first restaurant #NasrinsKitchen in NY! 🥹 Her cooking is out of this world & she just happens to be one of the kindest, loveliest people on earth. 😍
Nasrin was forced to flee Iran w/her three beautiful kids in 2014. They stayed in Turkey for two years before coming to NY. After a rough period living in a shelter, she joined the phenomenal team of refugee chefs from all over the world at @eatoffbeat (where we met in 2018–see second photo!) She later told me she was excited to meet me because she didn’t speak much English at the time & didn’t know many Farsi speakers so when we met, she burst into tears (as did I!) & we held each other as we talked & talked & talked. Since then, we’ve collaborated on a number of events. I’m looking forward to many, many more Nasrin jan. Just the beginning…🥹😭😍

“The point of this campaign is to enshrine these words, gender apartheid into international law and this is one way of helping the struggle inside Iran & Afghanistan and recognizing, through policy and law what these women are going through. For decades, these women have been gaslit, abandoned by their own governments and in large part by the international community and so this is a way of standing in solidarity with a legal framework to support it and no longer tolerating any government, organization or person trying to dismiss this kind of systematic oppression based on some orientalist notion of culture and religion.”

I got to spend an afternoon with Syrian artist & refugee @mohamad_jokhadar in his studio at Al Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan. He shared some of his work w/me & we spoke about art, process & inspiration. The breadth & depth of his creations took my breath away. I kept circling back to one piece that was inspired by the catastrophic earthquake at the Turkey/Syria border. The three faces on his piece were people he saw in the news who’d lost their families, their homes, their lives. This was Mohammad’s favorite piece & when I shared that it was my favorite too, he quickly offered it to me as a gift. His work isn’t only on display in the studio, you can find huge displays of his art on buildings throughout the camp & inside facilities like the @rescueorg health clinic. He said he recently spent a day & a half creating a massive mural together with some of the children in the camp. I’m honored & grateful to get to know such a deep, generous artist & can’t wait for the next opportunity to visit him. Thank you Mohamad. You inspire me. ✨❤️✨

Please run to see @wedaretodreammovie however possible. In her second film after the masterful @forsamafilm @waadalkateab knocks it out of the park once again creating such deep, layered, nuanced portrayals of refugees, this time with the @refugeeolympicteam. One of the best, most inspiring films I’ve ever seen with the most beautiful, down to earth people. Final screening @tribeca is Saturday 11:45 am but if you can’t make that, you can rent the film through the website. Link in bio. 🏅❤️🔥✨

Refugees are changemakers.
Leading up to #WorldRefugeeDay, we partnered with IRC Ambassador @SepidehMoafi, an Iranian-American actor, singer, and former refugee, to show how the influence of refugees on culture is immeasurable.
Wherever they come from, wherever they live, refugees are shaping policies, art, traditions, cuisine, dreams and futures in ordinary—and extraordinary—ways.
Join us by sharing the journeys, stories and contributions of refugees around the world.
