I joined international jurists and human rights defenders in signing onto a joint letter and underlying legal brief urging States to include the crime of gender apartheid in the draft crimes against humanity (CAH) treaty. Women and girls who live under the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Islamic Republic in Iran are battling extreme, institutionalized and systematized gender-based oppression and domination. This treatment has a name: gender apartheid. The UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee (Legal) is scheduled to debate the proposed CAH treaty in October. Member States have the choice to recognize the CAH of gender apartheid in the treaty. Codifying this crime will provide the international community with the necessary tools to mobilize against apartheid regimes and hold perpetrators of gender apartheid accountable. We can’t miss this chance to make gender apartheid a crime recognized under international law. @endgenderapartheid.today @SLPJustice #EndGenderApartheid

During the panel, I discussed a range of topics, including my work with @rescueorg and their critical efforts to help people affected by humanitarian crises survive, recover, and rebuild their lives. I also spoke about the challenges of navigating censorship and fickle algorithms in today’s online media landscape.

The End Gender Apartheid campaign had a packed 72 hours of advocacy in New York City last week. Stops included observing the Sixth Committee (Legal) session at the United Nations that discussed whether the crimes against humanity draft treaty should move to negotiations and different briefings with countries (not pictured). As of the date of this post, 122 UN member states support the treaty moving forward 💪🏼 #EndGenderApartheid

Last week, the End Gender Apartheid global campaign traveled to New York for the 79th Session of the United Nations Sixth Committee, which is convening to determine the next steps for the crimes against humanity draft treaty, including whether to proceed to formal negotiations. The decision to move forward with the draft treaty would be a vital step forward toward the codification of gender apartheid as a crime against humanity under international law. This is an important moment for States to show that they stand with the women of Afghanistan and Iran in the fight for justice and accountability. #EndGenderApartheid
We believe every life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity. Each beating heart is someone’s entire world. For the last 12 months, Artists4Ceasefire has called for an immediate, permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages and delivery of lifesaving aid. We cannot bomb our way to peace.
