It’s the generosity of those who have lost everything that always strikes me, those Syrian traditions that never seem to dissipate no matter how dire the circumstances.
We spent the day in Hatay and the surrounding areas. Facades that crumbled exposing the raw gaping wounds of the lives that were. Buildings pancaked or crumbled. The stench of death everywhere.
My charity @inaraorg is focused on filling in the gaps in access to aid – whether that’s because its not reaching families or they have specific needs / items that aren’t part of what is being given out. What we are finding is that the majority of those families are Syrian. I’m very worried about tensions and resentment towards the Syrian refugee population. It was already high, is highly politically charged, and very very sad.
We’ve also been visiting the families of our beneficiaries. So far we’ve only been able to communicate with about half of them.
A lot of people have been comparing this to a warzone. I don’t know that I would. This is something else entirely.
There is a certain silence to people face’s here, as if the variety of emotions that our features express have been erased, and all that is left is stunned, deep, inexplicable sorrow. Conversations between strangers are a whispered list of who they have lost, news of death of a relative comes during a slow shuffle through the grocery store. Shock and trauma. Millions of people’s lives turned upside down by one single seismic event.
We need to do everything to help all of them.
