Thank you for all the comments coming in for ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on @disneyplus! Glad to see so many people (and pet cats!) falling in love with Petaka who’s pictured here looking like a complete hero. Petaka’s mother, Sarmiento, was nicknamed ‘Hollywood’ as she had this amazing ability to strike a pose in front of the most epic backdrops. This trait clearly runs in the family! If you enjoy the episodes, please keep sharing your thoughts! #AnimalsUpClose @natgeo @wildstarfilms

A pod of wave-washing killer whales hunt three crabeater seals at once. There are just 100 of these special killer whales in Antarctica. We humans often wonder just how smart are wild animals? Well, these killer whales have learned by using teamwork as a family group, and water as a tool, they can create powerful waves to access seals that would otherwise be out of reach. Every single time we saw them hunt, their tactics were different, the types of waves created were different. It was artful more than instinctive. It is not a stretch to say that they were using their imagination. The killer whales, when making those waves, can’t see their target, they have to imagine where it is. This technique that they have mastered is like that of a professional athlete who masters a sport. We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you this breaking news: sled dog puppy party! We bumped into these little ones while filming in the Canadian Arctic for a new secret project. The puppies are sadly not the filming subject. Wild dogs are seriously fast. They can run at speeds of more than 40mph. The pack we were following loved hunting warthogs. To our amazement, in a 100m sprint the warthogs were faster than the dogs! Any further and the dogs’ stamina was far superior. Once spotted, the warthog would dash to the nearest burrow. The race was simple, could the warthog get to a burrow within 100m? If not, could they find one before the dogs caught up? In Chilean Patagonia we were searching for one particular puma. Meet Petaka. When I first met her four years ago filming for David Attenborough’s ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet’, she was just a cub. She was cute, fluffy and totally reliant on her mother. Four years on, she has not only survived but has also become a powerful mother herself. Petaka has two cubs that local trackers have named ‘Frost’ and ‘Breeze’. Over our 51 days of filming in Chile, the family took us on a physical and emotional rollercoaster that we can’t wait to share with you in #AnimalsUpClose coming to @disneyplus September 13th! @wildstarfilms @natgeo

One more sleep until ‘Animals Up Close with @bertiegregory ‘ launches on Disney ! Are you ready?!
My favourite adventure for #AnimalsUpClose took us to Chile’s Torres Del Paine National Park. Pictured in the background is the iconic Almirante Nieto Mountain with The Torres (The Towers) to the right. Climbing Almirante Nieto was physically one of the hardest things I’ve done and just writing this sentence makes my legs hurt. This climb forms part of our Patagonia Pumas episode coming to @disneyplus September 13th! @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Well done to those of you that guessed marine iguana on my last post! This is the only lizard in the world that regularly swims in the sea. Each day they brave 10ft waves to forage for seaweed underwater. The nutrient rich currents that hit The Galapagos are relatively chilly so as cold-blooded animals, these iguanas must warm up in the sun before jumping in. These bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs are also on hand to help keep their solar-panel-scales in tip top condition. The crabs pick off dead skin in what seems like a weird seaside pampering session. Meet my favourite African animal, the wild dog. We spent a month in Botswana’s Okavango Delta following a pack as they attempted to raise 14 tiny pups! Twenty years ago, their population was estimated at over 500,000 worldwide. Due to conflict with humans, now less than 7000 remain making them one of Africa’s most endangered predators. In #AnimalsUpClose, we wanted to find what it’s like to be a wild dog, why are their lives so challenging and what’s being done to turn their fate around? A pack of African wild dogs returning to their den at sunset. Their dedication to each other and their 14 tiny pups was like nothing I’ve witnessed in nature. Every day, members would put their lives on the line to ensure the pack’s success. Flying a drone over The Galapagos Islands was a spine-tingling experience. The landscape is so varied with both lush green forests and desolate inhospitable volcanos. We searched for three rare animal behaviours seen nowhere else on the Earth. Shot for #AnimalsUpClose coming to @disneyplus September 13th! @wildstarfilms @natgeo
