Multiple well meaning people told me that this was a once in a lifetime trip and to do it now while I’m young. After this adventure I was deeply hooked and I just couldn’t accept that. Chris Beeman, Ph. D., is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Brandon University in Manitoba.
He earned his Doctorate of Education from Queen’s University at Kingston and teaches in the area of indigenous epistemologies and ontologies.
Alex and Chris have worked together to record this invaluable collection of stories as told by Alex Mathias about his early life growing up on Obabika Lake, within his family territory in the Temagami region.

Some pics from me and @torigoesoutside splitting, hauling and stacking firewood for the winter, one of my three sisters raised garden beds tilled over for the winter, and a shot of me throwing my son Hudson up in the air – his favourite thing! Despite the fact that it’s “work” I can’t think of anything better for the spirit than doing psychical work outdoors, particularly when it’s for yourself.
