The “no contact rule” is a 21-day period of intentional silence after someone has broken up with us.
Why is this so important? Because the other person needs to feel the magnitude of what they’ve done, and without a period of absence, you remove the emotional fallout of their actions.
Remember, this isn’t about playing games, but rather about allowing enough space to be created for the other person to think and course correct if the decision was born out of raw emotions or fear.
And if they don’t ever come back, by definition, the person who doesn’t choose you isn’t your person!
Intense emotional or physical pain can quickly lead to catastrophic thinking.
Phrases like: “I can’t do this,” “I’ll never get over this,” and “I’ll never meet someone like this again” are examples of catastrophic thinking.
It has us extrapolating today’s pain far into the future, with the assumption that it will never change in intensity.
We could say that the things that are causing us pain right now will one day go away. This is true in the case of a relationship ending, as we will be able to find another relationship and eventually move on from the pain of the last one.
But not all pain “goes away” with a change in circumstances. Some pain is chronic. And yet, even in the case of chronic pain, pain modulates. It changes. And how we relate to it changes. This is important to remember. Because the first truth—that pain hurts—can blind us to the second truth: that it changes.
If there is something in your life causing you pain today, remember this simple truth: that it will hurt, and it will change.
