Craig Shoemaker Instagram - Lotsa scuttlebutt about the Hall & Oates lawsuit. We really don’t know anything. With restraining orders, you’re not allowed to speak. But here’s what I do now. Oates is a really good guy. Back in 2005, I received an email from John Oates, expressing how much he loved my comedy, asked if I was from Philadelphia, let me know that he and the band listen to me on their tour bus. These guys are rock ‘n’ roll, hall of fame, legends, and I thought someone was playing a joke on me, so I wrote back, “yeah, right. I and I’m Vanilli.” He wrote a second time and said he’d leave me tix for their gig at the Greek theater in LA. An amazing concert, of course, and I went backstage to meet the legends. We told some stories, talked about us both going to Temple University. I worked up the courage to invite him to be an actor in the movie we were filming at the time, “Totally Baked.” I couldn’t believe he said, “yes!” John, his wife & son show up at the set of the independent movie I created, a film about marijuana that posed the question, “should the weed be freed?“ He was such a great sport. I had to ad lib and write a scene for him, moving things around to accommodate our special guest. He had shaved his iconic mustache, and stated that no one recognizes him. Immediately, I pulled out scissors, cut the auburn hair of our prop guy, got some glue, fixed it to John’s upper lip. We actually ended up using the mustache as a stoner Easter egg, slapping it on various characters throughout the film. Hall couldn’t make it, so I stepped in, already playing the narrator you can only see if you’re high, and had one of our actresses bend over backwards, dangling her long, blonde hair over my face, so I could be Daryl Hall. One of the characters I named, “Noyd,“ was paranoid when high, turning to his friend in fright, saying, “I’m so baked, I think I see Hall & Oates,“ which prompted me & John to sing a few verses of their hit song, “Maneater.“ Check out the film, streaming on a few platforms.
