Caption : Tomorrow, I’ll attend my 5th Emmy Awards show to honor work that I’ve written and produced. Every year, I starve and exhaust my large trans body in order to shrink to the small-minded standards of the fashion houses and luxury brands that profit from these events. But this year, I didn’t change a thing. I ate the same shit I always eat, and I sat on my fat ass typing away at scripts. In the time I usually spend on my exterior, I instead spent writing a Broadway musical, my first feature film, and two new television shows. Because writing is my job, not partnering with luxury companies who make the most vulnerable members of my community feel like shit for not having enough, doing enough, or being enough. Last night, I danced naked in front of a mirror. I told my body she was beautiful and I thanked her for putting up with my shenanigans. I told my titties they were worth every penny, and I told my dick that I loved her. Instead of the nervousness I usually feel, today, I feel great. I feel strong. I feel grateful that I get to show up to a mainstream awards show as the full-bodied transsexual f*ggot self that I am. Praise the goddess for progress, sobriety, and the support of my incredible trans family. And thank you to the Television Academy for welcoming me with open arms!

Caption : Pose may not have brought home any trophies this weekend, but we, as a community, won. At every turn along the way, we brought trans stories and trans bodies into spaces that have historically excluded us, and this has forever changed Hollywood. Thank you for watching and supporting our show. For insisting that television represent the diverse world we live in. For laughing and crying with us as we shared our stories with those who had never before been given the chance to relate to our humanity. I used to think that diminishing both the physical and spiritual elements of my transness would be the key to finding success in the arts, but I’ve learned that performing cishet culture will only get us so far. In order to summon the life force that is required for a sustainable career, we must bring ALL of ourselves to our creations. Thank you to my wonderful stylist Marko Monroe and dressmaker Wendi Williams-Stern for constructing a look that embodies the strength, creativity, intelligence, and resilience it takes to show UP. These awards shows can be psychological minefields for women and visibly trans folks, and I’m grateful that you allowed me to have fun while stomping the red carpet. (Ps – I don’t know why some outlets are censoring my nipples. They were declared male at birth and are no different from the other nipples we see in the media every day, so please keep your shame off of my body.)

Caption : My body has been fighting HIV for 17 years. I am in awe of it for its ability to fight. Sometimes I find that living becomes synonymous with fighting, which is when I remind myself to return to love. I celebrate the history of my body in its scars, vulnerability, age, and expanding sexuality. Caption : A friend just sent me this selfie I took in 1996 and… holy shit. When I look at it, I see someone who is scared and confused, but also someone who is optimistic and energized about the future. Thank Goddess I had music to look forward to. My physical transition was such an affirming and positive influence on my life, but it also thickened my skin in ways that don’t line up with who I really am. In an effort to reclaim that optimism and creative energy, I dove into creating a new catalogue of deeply personal and intimate music which I will be debuting at my Lincoln Center show on February 15. Caption : This photo was taken a few months before I found out I had AIDS, nearly 18 years ago. I was deathly thin and suffering from opportunistic infections caused by my dwindling immune system, with staph infections causing oozing blisters all over my body. I hid my sickness with glamour, telling myself that I was just “fashion thin,” because the reality of AIDS was too terrifying for my young, queer soul. In a moment of grace, I got tested and went on meds, which saved my life. Doctors loaded me up with antibiotics, anti-retrovirals, and prescription protein packets to counter the wasting that AIDS had inflicted on my body. Although I’ve been open with my HIV status, I’ve kept my AIDS diagnosis silent for all these years because it’s just been too damn scary. I am so grateful for the doctors, nurses and scientists who didn’t let this fear stop them from fighting for my life. On this World AIDS Day, I hope we remember what they taught us — that pandemics are only intensified by fear and shame. Choosing science is the surest way to calm these fears and ensure our survival. Let’s honor those we lost by leaning on our collective wisdom to get through this current pandemic. Lets treat ourselves and those around us with the kindness and love that we all deserve. I’m fucking exhausted from a lifetime of begging for respect. I am disturbed and angry that we have to keep bleeding out the same basic principles of our humanity so that people will simply give us the space to survive. I’m rattled by the humiliation we are expected to endure as folks mock and challenge our very existence. I hope you’re taking care of your mental health. I hope you’re pursuing pleasure and safely finding ways to reduce your pain. I hope you are connecting with your ability to transcend. I hope you are reaching out to other trans and non-binary folks to reflect your beauty and your power with each other. Protect the divinity within you. Protect the holy center of your being. This is why they taunt us. They see the magic in us and they wish they had an ounce of it. Caption : Our weekly benefit concerts have lifted my spirits during these last two months, and I am deeply grateful for your viewership and contributions to Covid relief, but I can’t think about music or songs or laughter right now. My baby brother, James, died from suicide on Monday after quietly battling PTSD & depression, and my family and I are trying to pick up the pieces of what and why it happened, while thinking about how we can prevent it from happening to another beautiful, smart, devoted, kind member of our armed forces. Caption : There aren’t enough words to describe how wonderful Barbara Maier Gustern was. She was an angel to everyone lucky enough to know her, beloved by every downtown and Broadway artist in NYC. I must’ve had a hundred voice lessons with her over the 12 years that we worked together, each one filled with laughter and love. She literally gave me my voice. She came to every show, and even performed in a concert to raise funds for my first gender-affirming surgery. She was the most generous teacher I’ve ever known. An inspiration and a true legend.
