At every turn along the way, we brought trans stories and trans bodies into spaces that have historically excluded us, and this has forever changed Hollywood. Thank you for watching and supporting our show. For insisting that television represent the diverse world we live in. For laughing and crying with us as we shared our stories with those who had never before been given the chance to relate to our humanity. I used to think that diminishing both the physical and spiritual elements of my transness would be the key to finding success in the arts, but I’ve learned that performing cishet culture will only get us so far. In order to summon the life force that is required for a sustainable career, we must bring ALL of ourselves to our creations. Thank you to my wonderful stylist Marko Monroe and dressmaker Wendi Williams-Stern for constructing a look that embodies the strength, creativity, intelligence, and resilience it takes to show UP. These awards shows can be psychological minefields for women and visibly trans folks, and I’m grateful that you allowed me to have fun while stomping the red carpet. (Ps – I don’t know why some outlets are censoring my nipples. They were declared male at birth and are no different from the other nipples we see in the media every day, so please keep your shame off of my body.) The Oscars Academy Awards This photo was taken a few months before I found out I had AIDS, nearly 18 years ago. I was deathly thin and suffering from opportunistic infections caused by my dwindling immune system, with staph infections causing oozing blisters all over my body. I hid my sickness with glamour, telling myself that I was just “fashion thin,” because the reality of AIDS was too terrifying for my young, queer soul. In a moment of grace, I got tested and went on meds, which saved my life. Doctors loaded me up with antibiotics, anti-retrovirals, and prescription protein packets to counter the wasting that AIDS had inflicted on my body. Although I’ve been open with my HIV status, I’ve kept my AIDS diagnosis silent for all these years because it’s just been too damn scary. I am so grateful for the doctors, nurses and scientists who didn’t let this fear stop them from fighting for my life. On this World AIDS Day, I hope we remember what they taught us — that pandemics are only intensified by fear and shame. Choosing science is the surest way to calm these fears and ensure our survival. Let’s honor those we lost by leaning on our collective wisdom to get through this current pandemic. Lets treat ourselves and those around us with the kindness and love that we all deserve. Sending love and strength to everyone, now more than ever. ❤️ 🏳️⚧️ ☀️ #worldaidsday #hiv #aids #transisbeautiful Trans and non-binary folks. Your feelings are valid. I know you are tired of being used as clickbait by people in positions of power. I’m tired too. I’m fucking exhausted from a lifetime of begging for respect. I am disturbed and angry that we have to keep bleeding out the same basic principles of our humanity so that people will simply give us the space to survive. I’m rattled by the humiliation we are expected to endure as folks mock and challenge our very existence. I hope you’re taking care of your mental health. I hope you’re pursuing pleasure and safely finding ways to reduce your pain. I hope you are connecting with your ability to transcend. I hope you are reaching out to other trans and non-binary folks to reflect your beauty and your power with each other. Protect the divinity within you. Protect the holy center of your being. This is why they taunt us. They see the magic in us and they wish they had an ounce of it. They know they wouldn’t last a minute in our shoes, so they push us to the edge to test just how much we can take. Don’t let them extinguish you. Do everything you can to survive. I need you here beside me. I love you so very very much. 5 years ago today, I made the mistake of performing at Pride only 3 weeks after having facial feminization surgery. I accidentally ripped my ear off when changing clothes because even though the stitches were out, I hadn’t quite healed. May this be a cautionary Pride tale for my trans siblings 😝 And thank you to the doctor who allowed me to hold my dog throughout this traumatic event. #happypride Portland Oregon There aren’t enough words to describe how wonderful Barbara Maier Gustern was. She was an angel to everyone lucky enough to know her, beloved by every downtown and Broadway artist in NYC. I must’ve had a hundred voice lessons with her over the 12 years that we worked together, each one filled with laughter and love. She literally gave me my voice. She came to every show, and even performed in a concert to raise funds for my first gender-affirming surgery. She was the most generous teacher I’ve ever known. An inspiration and a true legend. Being old and trans is feeling grateful that the good goddess had a divine plan all along that includes sleeping in, flying business class, and spending all of your money on dogs, crystals and drag shows instead of diapers, birthday parties, and tuition. I’m thrilled to be making my directorial debut on this season of American Horror Story. New Season. New City. New Fears. FX’s AHS:NYC premieres 10.19 on FX. Stream on Hulu. Loving our femme bodies is an act of resistance. Loving our femme bodies is what will keep our femme bodies alive. Love is energizing. Love is protective. Love is preservation. Love is power. Love builds patience. Love builds wisdom. Love prevents us from burning out. When we operate from love, time is on our side. With time, we watch the seeds of our love grow. With time, we watch those who wish us harm fade into the distance. Love is resistance. Love is survival. Love builds powerful trans women. Love centers trans women in our power. It’s all about love, baby! 📸 @robertascroft When my brother, James, was growing up, he told me he wanted to go to space. He had the intelligence, the discipline, and the talent to do it, so he dedicated his youth to his studies and was accepted into the US Air Force Academy at 17. From there, he fell in love with flying and went on to serve in the US Air Force, providing humanitarian relief to war torn locations, as well as recovering wounded military members from combat zones. He loved being in the sky more than anything. But in 2017, the Air Force stationed him in Las Vegas to fly combat drones, forcing him to witness violent combat on computer screens from a remote ground location in the Nevada desert, something he detested and spoke out against. Though drone pilots witness more violence than many service members ever do, the Air Force doesn’t consider these missions to have negative effects on a pilot’s mental health. Pilots are not tested nor trained to handle the mental strains of close combat, and if they seek out mental healthcare, they are often grounded from flying again, destroying the dream that brought them to serve in the first place. On May 18, 2020, after flying 595 drone combat missions, my brother took his life. His pleas to the Air Force went unheard, and his world crumbled around him. My world crumbled too, and the world of everyone in my family. He was a kind, intelligent, sensitive, loving, and brilliant brother. His service had high-level positive impacts on our national security, and his life had an even greater impact on those who loved him. I miss you and I love you, James. It’s a shitty time to witness the blowback against trans rights, so put on some lipstick, make out with a stranger, send your friends a terrible joke… do whatever it takes to make yourself laugh and stay excited about life. I love you so much. I’m not giving up on you. #tdov 🏳️⚧️ We can’t deny the fatigue that the world is feeling right now from witnessing the strides the trans community has made towards equality. This exhaustion is manifesting itself in the troubling rhetoric that trans folks are now asking for “too much.” Please hear me out: the exhaustion from witnessing our progress is not a measure of the job being complete; it is merely a measure of how little we once had. The world sees the red carpets, they see us starting to show up clothed and fed, they see us on tv and film, and they think — “that’s enough. Not too much, now.” But ask yourself — where are the trans folks in your life? Are they equally employed? Are they equally housed? Are they equally loved and embraced by our broader society? The answer is unequivocally — “no.” We are not there yet. Please don’t give up on the work. I’ve always loved Hedwig & The Angry Inch, so I was thrilled when my dear friend @jaustineyer asked me to give Hedwig a try. Here’s a little video we made of “Origin Of Love.” Maybe we should find a theatre for her? 💋 Link to the full video in my bio. Out now on hulu!
