Yona Speidel - 9.9K Likes - Tomorrow, I’ll attend my 5th Emmy Awards show to honor work that I’ve written and produced.

Every year, I starve and exhaust my large trans body in order to shrink to the small-minded standards of the fashion houses and luxury brands that profit from these events.

But this year, I didn’t change a thing. I ate the same shit I always eat, and I sat on my fat ass typing away at scripts. In the time I usually spend on my exterior, I instead spent writing a Broadway musical, my first feature film, and two new television shows. Because writing is my job, not partnering with luxury companies who make the most vulnerable members of my community feel like shit for not having enough, doing enough, or being enough.

Last night, I danced naked in front of a mirror. I told my body she was beautiful and I thanked her for putting up with my shenanigans. I told my titties they were worth every penny, and I told my dick that I loved her. Instead of the nervousness I usually feel, today, I feel great. I feel strong. I feel grateful that I get to show up to a mainstream awards show as the full-bodied transsexual f*ggot self that I am. Praise the goddess for progress, sobriety, and the support of my incredible trans family. And thank you to the Television Academy for welcoming me with open arms!

Thank you to my wonderful stylist Marko Monroe and dressmaker Wendi Williams-Stern for constructing a look that embodies the strength, creativity, intelligence, and resilience it takes to show UP. These awards shows can be psychological minefields for women and visibly trans folks, and I’m grateful that you allowed me to have fun while stomping the red carpet.

I was deathly thin and suffering from opportunistic infections caused by my dwindling immune system, with staph infections causing oozing blisters all over my body. I hid my sickness with glamour, telling myself that I was just “fashion thin,” because the reality of AIDS was too terrifying for my young, queer soul.

In a moment of grace, I got tested and went on meds, which saved my life. Doctors loaded me up with antibiotics, anti-retrovirals, and prescription protein packets to counter the wasting that AIDS had inflicted on my body.

Although I’ve been open with my HIV status, I’ve kept my AIDS diagnosis silent for all these years because it’s just been too damn scary.

I am so grateful for the doctors, nurses and scientists who didn’t let this fear stop them from fighting for my life. On this World AIDS Day, I hope we remember what they taught us — that pandemics are only intensified by fear and shame. Choosing science is the surest way to calm these fears and ensure our survival.

Let’s honor those we lost by leaning on our collective wisdom to get through this current pandemic. Lets treat ourselves and those around us with the kindness and love that we all deserve.

She was an angel to everyone lucky enough to know her, beloved by every downtown and Broadway artist in NYC. I must’ve had a hundred voice lessons with her over the 12 years that we worked together, each one filled with laughter and love. She literally gave me my voice. She came to every show, and even performed in a concert to raise funds for my first gender-affirming surgery. She was the most generous teacher I’ve ever known. An inspiration and a true legend.

I’ll always feel grateful that I was able to bring a little light into some of the darkest moments of my life by writing them into Pose. I wasn’t alone with my HIV diagnosis when Pray Tell and Ricky were experiencing it with me. Same with my hospital visits, stigma, rejection, and fear of dying. Most importantly to me, my survival story is now one that I share with Blanca. Thank you to everyone who contributed to delivering these stories to the screen. We did that.

Yona Speidel - 2.3K Likes - When my brother, James, was growing up, he told me he wanted to go to space. He had the intelligence, the discipline, and the talent to do it, so he dedicated his youth to his studies and was accepted into the US Air Force Academy at 17. From there, he fell in love with flying and went on to serve in the US Air Force, providing humanitarian relief to war torn locations, as well as recovering wounded military members from combat zones. He loved being in the sky more than anything. But in 2017, the Air Force stationed him in Las Vegas to fly combat drones, forcing him to witness violent combat on computer screens from a remote ground location in the Nevada desert, something he detested and spoke out against. Though drone pilots witness more violence than many service members ever do, the Air Force doesn’t consider these missions to have negative effects on a pilot’s mental health. Pilots are not tested nor trained to handle the mental strains of close combat, and if they seek out mental healthcare, they are often grounded from flying again, destroying the dream that brought them to serve in the first place. On May 18, 2020, after flying 595 drone combat missions, my brother took his life. His pleas to the Air Force went unheard, and his world crumbled around him. My world crumbled too, and the world of everyone in my family. He was a kind, intelligent, sensitive, loving, and brilliant brother. His service had high-level positive impacts on our national security, and his life had an even greater impact on those who loved him. I miss you and I love you, James. Thank you for everything you gave us.

If you need a trigger warning or if you find yourself policing the language of others, then you might be in the wrong profession. 2) Delete your Twitter account. When you type something witty and someone likes it, you feel like you’ve accomplished something. In actuality, you’ve just thrown away your talents to people who don’t care, and worse yet, you haven’t gotten paid for it. 3) Learn the difference between entitlement and confidence. Entitlement — “Why didn’t I get the job? Why didn’t they like my script? The world is fucked up, and this is why I’m not successful.” Confidence — “I understand why I didn’t get the job, and I’m improving myself to become more successful. I understand the changes they would like to see in my script, and I’m going to execute them because my job is to serve the work, not my ego.”
