Every year, I starve and exhaust my large trans body in order to shrink to the small-minded standards of the fashion houses and luxury brands that profit from these events. But this year, I didn’t change a thing. I ate the same shit I always eat, and I sat on my fat ass typing away at scripts. In the time I usually spend on my exterior, I instead spent writing a Broadway musical, my first feature film, and two new television shows. Because writing is my job, not partnering with luxury companies who make the most vulnerable members of my community feel like shit for not having enough, doing enough, or being enough. Last night, I danced naked in front of a mirror. I told my body she was beautiful and I thanked her for putting up with my shenanigans. I told my titties they were worth every penny, and I told my dick that I loved her. Instead of the nervousness I usually feel, today, I feel great. I feel strong. I feel grateful that I get to show up to a mainstream awards show as the full-bodied transsexual f*ggot self that I am. Praise the goddess for progress, sobriety, and the support of my incredible trans family. And thank you to the Television Academy for welcoming me with open arms! Pose may not have brought home any trophies this weekend, but we, as a community, won. At every turn along the way, we brought trans stories and trans bodies into spaces that have historically excluded us, and this has forever changed Hollywood. Thank you for watching and supporting our show. For insisting that television represent the diverse world we live in. For laughing and crying with us as we shared our stories with those who had never before been given the chance to relate to our humanity. I used to think that diminishing both the physical and spiritual elements of my transness would be the key to finding success in the arts, but I’ve learned that performing cishet culture will only get us so far. In order to summon the life force that is required for a sustainable career, we must bring ALL of ourselves to our creations. Thank you to my wonderful stylist Marko Monroe and dressmaker Wendi Williams-Stern for constructing a look that embodies the strength, creativity, intelligence, and resilience it takes to show UP. These awards shows can be psychological minefields for women and visibly trans folks, and I’m grateful that you allowed me to have fun while stomping the red carpet. (Ps – I don’t know why some outlets are censoring my nipples. They were declared male at birth and are no different from the other nipples we see in the media every day, so please keep your shame off of my body.) Thanks to @barryleemoe for this @toriamos hair moment 🍄🌸🏳️⚧️⚡️👽🥓 New York, New York On your first visit to the set of Transparent, I asked you to drive the golf cart because I was afraid of crashing it and losing my job. You were already a pilot, flying around the world, smarter and more fearless than I ever was, and certainly much kinder and more tender-hearted. One year without you seems impossible, so I choose to believe that you’ve transitioned from being my little brother to my big brother, now watching over me. I love you, James. Paramount Pictures Studios I’m grateful for all of the work that went into allowing us to have a Covid-safe live premiere for Pose this week. Of course, I can’t ignore the events of the evening, but going into details wouldn’t be appropriate at this time. I appreciate and accept Janet’s amends, and I respect the bravery of her acknowledging it in public. I’m honored to be nominated alongside my colleagues, not only as a producer, but as a writer this year. I’ll always feel grateful that I was able to bring a little light into some of the darkest moments of my life by writing them into Pose. I wasn’t alone with my HIV diagnosis when Pray Tell and Ricky were experiencing it with me. Same with my hospital visits, stigma, rejection, and fear of dying. Most importantly to me, my survival story is now one that I share with Blanca. Thank you to everyone who contributed to delivering these stories to the screen. We did that. And congrats to @stevencanals, @theebillyporter, @mjrodriguez7, @analuciamcgorty, @barryleemoe, @sherrilaurence and @tanasepopa for their individual and department nominations. Last night, we celebrated the final season of our show with dinner and dancing in a post-vaccinated world. Afterwards, I watched the last episode directed by @stevencanals and cried my eyes out. I’m so proud to have been a part of this series. I wish I had grown up with @mjrodriguez7 @dominiquet.a.r.jackson as my role models, the way that future generations will now have their stardom to gaze and dream upon. I hope y’all enjoy our final season, premiering May 2 on FX. 🌸🍄👽🦋✨🏳️⚧️💎 Repost • @lavernecox Saturday night with the girls. Celebrating sisterhood and @poseonfx’s #emmynominations with @hailiesahar, one of the show’s stars and @ourladyj, producer and writer for the show. Our Lady J’s nomination for outstanding writing for a drama series is the first nomination in this category for openly trans writers. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew and all this year’s nominees. … #TransIsBeautiful When we argue that society should accept us because we are “born this way,” we reinforce the Puritanical belief that choosing nontraditional gender expression or sexuality is inherently evil, and that we deserve whatever punishment comes our way if we stray from “God’s plan.” As we approach pride month, let’s emphasize the importance of freedom of choice. We can choose to fuck whomever we want, however we want. We can choose to express gender as we please, including body modification and adornment. Reject Puritanism. Celebrate choice. When young writers come to me for advice, I usually offer them these three things. 1) Don’t be afraid of words. If you need a trigger warning or if you find yourself policing the language of others, then you might be in the wrong profession. 2) Delete your Twitter account. When you type something witty and someone likes it, you feel like you’ve accomplished something. In actuality, you’ve just thrown away your talents to people who don’t care, and worse yet, you haven’t gotten paid for it. 3) Learn the difference between entitlement and confidence. Entitlement — “Why didn’t I get the job? Why didn’t they like my script? The world is fucked up, and this is why I’m not successful.” Confidence — “I understand why I didn’t get the job, and I’m improving myself to become more successful. I understand the changes they would like to see in my script, and I’m going to execute them because my job is to serve the work, not my ego.” If you find this info to be helpful, you’re welcome. If not, keep tweeting. To honor the birthday of my late brother, James, I’m hosting a free outdoor lunch for veterans at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Campus on August 9 from 11:30am – 1:30pm. If you have served and are in the LA area, please come and enjoy good food and great community with me.
