Danai Gurira Instagram – My favorite time of the year is US Open time! The electrifying energy of the world’s best duking it out as you commune with fellow New Yorkers in the dog days of summer…it just doesn’t get any better. Always loved this sport! And, had a true #LoveOurGirls moment yesterday as this is the 50th anniversary of Billie Jean King (a girl we seriously LOVE) fighting for equal prize money and winning. Now there’s a true champion!

Danai Gurira Instagram – Shockingly, sexual violence in Conflict Zones against women and children, is being committed all around the world. This issue has become vast and widespread. From Colombia to the Ukraine, to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Haiti and closer to home for me, as a Zimbabwean: to the DRC, Ethiopia, Central Republic of Africa and Sudan, this issue has now become prevalent in more countries, not fewer.
Earlier this week, at the @unitednations Security Council Open Debate on preventing conflict-related sexual violence, I spoke to the Council and other member states about how we must acknowledge women and survivors ALL over the world and, due to my personal connection, to more specifically shine a light on people of Africa in particular, and fight impunity. Nothing is more dangerous than crimes that are not acknowledged and that are unseen and allowed to persist. My hope was to amplify the voices of those who are never seen or heard. To acknowledge their suffering, make sure they are not forgotten and to hold those who allow this to continue responsible.

Danai Gurira Instagram – For this edition of #LoveOurGirls, I’m highlighting my trip to Kenya where I was able to visit the first-ever Kenyan carbon-neutral footprint safari @emboocamp and had the pleasure of being guided through the Maasai Mara by a couple of outstanding young Maasai women. This was such an exciting Love Our Girls moment because it breaks stereotypes in terms of our involvement in the conservation realm. I was also able to learn more about their work and involvement in their communities. I’m so excited for them to share their own experiences, stories, and what they have accomplished with you.
I also visited the @maraelephantproject, whose mission is protecting elephants and their habitats, and seeks a stable and healthy elephant population co-existing peacefully with people across the greater Mara ecosystem. During my time there, I met an astounding agronomist and leader in her field, Abigael, and learned about the groundbreaking work she and her team are doing.
I’m really excited for you to meet these incredible women and hear their powerful feminist perspectives. Enjoy! #EmbooRiver #EmbooCamps #MaasaiMara

Danai Gurira Instagram – Today is #ElephantAppreciationDay, and to celebrate these incredible mammals, I wanted to share a recent experience of being up close and personal with an elephant in the wild.🐘
One day during my trip to #Kenya this summer, we were headed to visit the @maraelephantproject, and as we flew over the Savannah they noticed an elephant on the ground that had a lot of wounds on his rear end and had visible punctures and cuts. In a spontaneous turn of events we grabbed the veterinarian and headed back into the wild to find this wounded elephant and get him the treatment he needed.
I was so thankful to be in the right place at the right time and tag along for this extraordinary experience. I watched as they tranquilized the bull –which we ended up naming ALI because he was such a fighter– was able to touch him and smell his elephant breath 😂 And learned about all of the incredible work done to conserve and manage Kenya’s tremendous wildlife.
These animals are breathtakingly beautiful, and certainly have minds of their own! And they deserve to be protected and celebrated today and every day!
Danai Gurira Instagram – On #WorldGorillaDay, @danaigurira and the team at @wildafricafund are deeply inspired by the remarkable efforts of gorilla conservationists and the awe-inspiring animals themselves, all brought to life through Danai’s captivating adventure while visiting Rwanda (@visitrwanda_now)! 🦍🇷🇼
Did you know that gorillas display many behaviours and emotions strikingly akin to our own? Remarkably, we share 98.3% of our genetic code with these incredible animals!
The gorilla population has been declining for decades, primarily due to their low reproductive rate. A female gorilla typically gives birth to only 3 to 4 offspring in her lifetime, underscoring the urgent need for gorilla conservation. Rwanda is a leader in this area, with their annual Kwita Izina being a way to bring awareness to these astounding creatures and preserve and protect them.
Danai visited Rwanda to attend the Business of Conservation Conference in Kigali and the Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony at Volcanoes National Park. During the latter event, she was honoured with the opportunity to name one of the 23 baby gorillas born in the last year. With great affection, she chose the name Aguka T’Challa as a touching tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Aguka is the gorilla’s Rwandan name, meaning Expansion. 🙏 Three years after Chadwick’s passing, Danai wished to honor his memory, and the timing of the ceremony was especially significant as it took place during his memorial week.
During her speech, Danai’s beautiful tribute was made clear by the following statement.
“…my dear brother Chadwick Boseman, whose love and appreciation for this continent shines brightly in the legacy that he left behind.”
Join us in commemorating #WorldGorillaDay and protecting Africa’s astounding wildlife heritage. 🤝

Danai Gurira Instagram – Conflict Related Sexual Violence must end. In times of conflict, rates of sexual violence increase exponentially; far too often, it is used as a weapon of war. Leaders must be held accountable to end a culture of impunity that perpetuates these atrocities. That’s why we need collective, decisive, and inclusive action on a global scale to demand a world that is safe and just for women and children.
I’ve partnered with @glblctzn to create an “Action Sprint” on their #GlobalCitizen app which will allow everyone to actively contribute to ending this issue. Download the app now to learn more and meet amazing activists who have long fought this issue, like #NiematAhmadi, the founder of @darfurwomenaction. It’s time to take action and stand up against #ConflictRelatedSexualViolence
