Today on Holocaust Memorial Day I want to pay tribute to two wonderful men I have the privilege of meeting while they were alive, who we’ve sadly lost in this last year.
Zigi Shipper BEM and Sir Ben Helfgott were born in Poland and as children, lost most of their extended families as part of the systematic murder of 6 million Jewish men, women and children in the Holocaust.
Sir Ben spent his youth as a slave labourer, in ghettos and concentration camps and saw unimaginable horrors. The story of his arrival in England after liberation has been immortalised as part of the story told in the BBC movie, ‘The Windermere Children’. Sir Ben overcame so much adversity to become the captain of British weightlifting team and won a bronze medal in the 1960s Olympics. He did decades of charity work, supporting fellow survivors and educating the public on the dangers of extremism and hate going unchecked.
Zigi’s childhood was spent in the Lodz ghetto, at several concentration camps including Auschwitz-Birkenau, and he survived a Nazi death march before being liberated. He came to England to join his mother, after his grandparents and father who he’d previously lived with had died or where never heard of again. Zigi too dedicated many decades educating young people about what happened in this awful period of history, and even though he suffered so much in his life, he still had such an infectious personality and was an absolute joy to be around. He too has been immortalised as King Charles (then The Prince of Wales) commissioned the portraits of seven Holocaust survivors, of whom Zigi was one, and so Zigi’s face hangs on the walls of Buckingham Palace today.
Sir Ben and Zigi were great lifelong friends, great advocates for @holocaustuk and are missed by so many in the wider community.

Happy Ruby Wedding Anniversary to the artists known as Mum and Dad, Bubbe and Grandad, Celia and Chris or Cynth and Roy! 😍💕👰🏼♀️🤵🏻♂️ Lovely catching up with family and old friends this weekend to celebrate 40 years of my parents happily being Mr and Mrs Riley – no mean feat! 42 odd years ago my Mum had the choice of sitting next to my Dad, or a man with a beard at a friend’s wedding… luckily for my Dad she didn’t like beards, and the rest is history 😆 Here’s to many more happy years together, well done you two! 🥂☕️❤️

A massive well done and thank you to @ozkaterji for staying when most other journalists were fleeing Ukraine and putting together such a powerful documentary film, The Battle For Kyiv.
Hard to see the carnage unfold over the first 6 weeks through Oz’s first hand footage and interviews.
I hope this film gets distribution so more people are able to see it.
When asked in the Q&A how we can help, Oz’s message was to give the Ukrainian people the supplies they need to defend themselves, and if appeased, Putin will not stop at Ukraine’s borders.
We’ve had Ukrainian refugee guests living with us since June 2022 and it was particularly poignant to watch this premiere today, as the grandma who lives with us is currently back in Ukraine visiting her son (for the first time in a very long time during his short leave from the army), and her eldest son has just today been called up and had to leave his family.
Well done Oz. Well done to everyone fighting for freedom. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦

Yep.
The Jewish People are diverse, strong, funny, beautiful, talented, resilient, hard-working, optimistic – and so much more. We love life.
But – there are only 16 million of us on the planet. So now, more than ever – rise up, speak up, and show your true Jewish colors. Be proud. Be bold. Be you.
And if you’re not Jewish? Stand by us. Fighting antisemitism is a numbers game – and we can’t win it alone. Woof. (That’s ‘thanks’).

I know it’s FA cup final day today, but the amazing @grassrootsoccer has already handed out its big trophy this year! Proud to support this charity in their efforts to work with adolescents to eradicate HIV and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa and start the conversation re mental health while they’re at it. Fab to interview the brilliant United legend @quintonfortune with Dennis Dube, from teenage participant to fully fledged member of the GRS team and lovely to meet fellow GRS supporter @kolabokinni. Thanks to all those who put a team together and came for a kick about for a good cause. PS Quinton predicted a 1-0 United win today, let’s see 🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣 ⚽️🌍❤️
