It is no secret that family, domestic and sexual violence increases when major sporting events, like State of Origin, occur. I asked the Department of Social Services what the Government is doing to prevent and address the heightened risk of FDSV during sporting events, and the response was pretty grim. Running ads by DrinkWise (an alcohol industry-backed lobbying organisation) that share 1800RESPECT is deeply inadequate when gendered violence can increase by up to 40% on game day.

When you’d rather rail against posters than inequality and the climate crisis… Weird flex, but ok.
The Coalition will never be serious about the climate crisis. Pleasing people in Paris is hardly the issue here, but the Opposition Leader knows that. The Liberals’ nuclear fantasies are a distraction. Labor has 92 new coal and gas projects in the pipeline, and the 5 new coal and gas projects approved in the last year. The major parties are making the climate crisis worse. People want action on climate change, not more coal, gas and hot air from the climate deniers.
UK Labour is considering a move to lower the voting age, it’s time Australian Labor got on board with the campaign to lower it in Australia too! Young people deserve a say in the decisions affecting their future. 16 and 17 year olds can drive, work, pay tax. So why not vote?
We haven’t seen the details of the Government’s proposed Deepfake Bill yet, but there’s no doubt image-based abuse is a serious concern, particularly for young women. And much like revenge porn, it is overwhelmingly used by men as a tool to harass and degrade. It’s well and good for legislation to be updated to make sharing deep fake or AI image-based abuse a crime, but it would be better that the images weren’t so easy to create and share in the first place.
The Greens are again calling on the Queensland government for an urgent review of the state’s archaic system of shark nets and drum lines, after a humpback whale was entangled in nets off Kings Beach on the Sunshine Coast this morning. Queensland’s shark control program is more than 50 years old and has killed more than 85,000 marine animals including sharks, turtles and dolphins. It’s completely out of date and isn’t in line with community expectations for protecting swimmers without harming marine life.

The Leaving Violence Program’s well-meaning referral pathways will lead to frontline services who have received no extra funding – what good is it to refer someone to a support service that is already full? If the Leaving Violence Program is the best this government can do for women experiencing family, domestic and sexual violence, they aren’t taking the issue seriously.
Our kids are our future. It’s our responsibility to leave them with a livable one. This Sunday 16 June at @littlegenovese in Coorparoo we’re hosting an important discussion about some of the big challenges we face as a community and a society. From climate change to the housing crisis and rising inequality, it’s clear life is getting harder and harder, especially for young people. We’ll be talking about how we got to this point, and how on earth we tackle these crises for the sake of our kids, and all future generations. I’d love you to join me, plus our brilliant Senator for Queensland, @larissawaters and local legend, community organiser and writer @nadine_chemali for this important discussion. RSVP now via link in bio 💚🌏

‼️TOMORROW NIGHT‼️ @mchandlermather and I are hosting this forum to discuss the fight back against escalating political attacks on migrant communities in Australia, like Labor’s proposed new anti-refugee bill, which will endanger the lives of asylum seekers. Both parties have been making moves to scapegoat migrants for a housing crisis caused by the big banks and property investors driving up rents and house prices for the rest of the country. In a country like Australia, we should be proud of multicultural and migrant communities, but Labor and the Liberals want to demonise migrants and use them to distract from their own failings. We can’t let them win. We’ll also be joined by Remah Naji from Justice for Palestine and Rita Jabri-Markwell from the Australian Muslim Advocacy Network – two incredible women you’ll want to hear from! Details and RSVP maxchandlermather.com/migration or at the link in my bio 🔗

Spending my Sunday afternoon with Nadine and Rebecca yesterday was so genuinely lovely! This heartfelt discussion with two incredible powerhouses from the local community filled me with so much hope for the future, for our kids’ futures and confirmed entirely my faith in our people-powered movements. @rebeccaforgreenslopes’s passion for education, her enthusiasm and her honesty really drove home what a hard-working member she would be for Greenslopes if (when🤞) she’s elected in October. And @nadine_chemali’s staunch advocacy continues to be awe-inspiring. Her recent work supporting @para.foundation is a testament to the force of her will, but also the power of community; can you believe @community4para has raised over $250k to support Palestinian families fleeing the genocide in Gaza in a month!?

I’m so excited for the Queensland state election. There’s so many brilliant Greens candidates running all over the state, including Andrew Kidd in my local electorate of Moggill! 💚 It was wonderful to join @andrewformoggill and @elizabethwatsonbrown on Sunday night to talk to the community in Kenmore about what’s been happening in politics, and the Greens plan for Queensland. We had some great questions from the public spanning all topics from taxing mining corporations, to improving state school funding and making our suburbs safer for women. This election the @queenslandgreens have a real shot at breaking up the 2 party system in Queensland forever. Unlike the major parties, we don’t take corporate donations, but with people power on our side, we can win seats like Moggill. Sign up to get involved via the link in stories 🙌

I joined with hundreds of local community members at Brookwater today to support their campaign to Save Woogaroo Forest. The private profits of property developers should not be more important than critical habitat and the community’s wishes. The Greens want to use the vast revenue currently going to property investors in tax perks to set up a public property developer, that would sell and rent houses at prices people can actually afford. This development will destroy important habitat for our native wildlife, while doing nothing to address the housing crisis.
This week is Refugee Week. This week, and every week, we say clearly: refugees are welcome here. The Labor Government is attempting to strip refugees and migrants of their rights as they run to the right of Dutton’s Coalition.
