Nine years ago today the Modern Slavery Act became law. It was truly world-leading legislation, putting the UK at the forefront of tackling this heinous crime. But today there are 50 million people trapped in slavery and forced labour around the world.
That’s why I launched the Global Commission on Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking.
The Global Commission brings together leaders from politics, business, academia & civil society. Together we will mobilise the evidence base, facilitate international collaboration & drive action on exploitation up the political agenda.

Last week I was in Kenya for a meeting of the Global Commission on Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking. We heard valuable insights from government representatives & NGOs from across Africa who work on the ground to overcome the challenges faced in tackling these heinous crimes.
Particular thanks to @maishagirlssafehouse for showing us the important work they do to protect victims. It was incredibly powerful to hear the experience of those who have suffered at the hands of slave drivers and traffickers.
