5 of my favorite moves to hit your core…and more.  Adding these mini resistance loops not only adds an extra challenge for your core, it works the hips, glutes & legs as well depending on where you position them & what the exercise is.  I’m all about more bang for my buck in my workouts. 

1. Oblique V up to leg lift
2. Side plank knee tuck
3. Bicycles
4. X openers
5. Flutter kicks 

Tips: 
-Don’t grip in your neck
-If you feel it in your back, you’re not engaging your core, modify or wait to try it again until you’ve built up more strength.
-Form is more important than reps, start with lower reps 5-10 & work your way up to 15-20.

Autumn Calabrese Instagram - My not so secret weapon for staying fit over 40 is strength training.  I use a variety of styles from basic movements with heavy weights, to compound movements with lighter weights.  Form is always priority number one, but my mobility and core strength is also very important. 

Building and/or maintaining our lean muscle mass is crucial as we get older. Strength training can help with hormone balance, maintaining better blood sugar levels, better bone health, weight management, improved posture & better sleep just to name a few things.

Autumn Calabrese Instagram - Sharing with y’all one of my favorite breakfasts right now.  I don’t do a lot of meal prepping & I don’t like to spend a lot of time cooking, BUT my food does have to be delicious! 😋 

I like to have fresh veggies, fruit, protein & healthy carbs on hand and I mix and match based on what I’m in the mood for.  This breakfast has lots of veggies which are good for your gut ( a healthy gut supports healthy hormones), good fat & protein.  All of which also helps keep your blood sugar stable in the morning. 

I know not everyone likes veggies, especially first thing in the morning but y’all, sometimes you have to be willing to explore, try new things and adjust your mindset around “breakfast” food.  If you’ll eat breakfast for dinner why not something you normally eat for dinner, for breakfast?! Let me know if you would try this.

You might see a lean woman that makes it look like it all comes naturally.  What you don’t see are all the scars, trials and tribulations that have been overcome over the years.

• C-section
• hernia
• benign growth on the side of my knee that had to be surgically removed

• sprained hip complex that left me barely able to walk for a month.

•scoliosis

• a freak “injury” as a child that left me hospitalized, unable to walk & left doctors wondering if I would recover.  I did but with no explanation as to why I was in so much pain.

These are just a few of the physical obstacles I’ve had to overcome over the years.  Im sure we all have reasons why it’s hard and why on some days we don’t feel like we can do it.  But all you need is one good reason to keep going.  My “why” has changed over the years but my goal to lead a healthy life hasn’t. 

It’s an honor to have hard work celebrated but honestly it’s about how I feel on the inside that matters most to me.  And I FEEL AMAZING!  This is a journey for life, believe it or not I’m just getting started. 💚

Here’s a full body routine you can do with a bench & some heavy weights.  Heavier weights, lower reps (10-12) is best for building muscle & keeping us strong ladies.  We lose muscle mass & bone density as we age lifting heavy is one way to prevent that.

Autumn Calabrese Instagram - Ladies I know staying fit over 40 isn’t as easy as it used to be for a lot of us.  But it’s not impossible.  It does require some tweaks to how we go about it.  Here’s the hard truth, you’re gonna have to be more diligent, more consistent & more deliberate. 

It used to be that as long as I was working out regularly and eating pretty healthy I could stay lean, keep my muscle definition, have all the energy & mental clarity and feel good. At 43 that’s not the case anymore.  I have to choose my workouts more carefully.  I can’t do as much high intensity, high impact although I do need a little of it.  I need more weight training, mobility training & I definitely need my rest days.

As for my food, I focus on my gut & hormone health by I corporatist a lot more plants.  At least 30 different plants a week (veggies mostly, some fruit and whole grains), I’m very diligent about keeping added sugar to a minimum, same with alcohol.

For the last 3 months I’ve been doing a combination of reformer & Cadillac Pilates combined with Chisel (The Masters Hammer & Chisel) and following a modified 4 Week Gut Protocol eating plan.  And I love throwing in compound movements like this one to work my whole body & being my heart rate up.

Autumn Calabrese Instagram - Happy Thanksgiving!!!🦃 I love this holiday, I love taking the day to reflect on all that I am grateful for.  I’ve let go of expectations with the holidays ( they never quite measure up when you have a bunch of expectations) and instead trace any expectation I might have had for appreciation of everything that is. While I practice gratitude every day, here’s a few things that I’m so thankful for right now.

I’m so grateful for my son, he is my greatest teacher, keeps me on my toes & always makes me laugh.  I’m grateful for friends that have turned into family, love me & support me no matter what.  I’m grateful for a job that I am so incredibly passionate about.  A job that allows me to be creative, challenges me to grow & learn & allows me to fully be me.

Autumn Calabrese Instagram - Fat Loss Mistake #2

One of the most common training mistakes I see women make when trying to lose fat is relying primarily on cardio while neglecting strength training.

Cardio can absolutely support fat loss by increasing energy expenditure. But when your goal is body recomposition — losing fat while maintaining or building lean muscle — resistance training becomes essential.

Here’s why:

When calories are reduced during a fat loss phase, the body can lose both fat and lean muscle tissue if there isn’t enough stimulus to maintain muscle.

Strength training provides that stimulus.

Research consistently shows that resistance training during weight loss helps:

• preserve lean muscle mass
• support metabolic rate
• improve body composition
• increase strength and functional fitness

Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it requires energy to maintain. Preserving and building muscle helps support a healthier metabolism over time.

That’s why the goal isn’t just burning calories during a workout — it’s creating the physiological signals that support long-term body composition changes.

There’s a lot of things I do to stay fit at 43, eating healthy, watching my portion sizes, drinking plenty of water, and getting quality sleep.  But there’s one thing that is my favorite part of my day & routine…. MOVEMENT!

No matter where I am, at home, on a work trip or on vacation, I move my body every day.  Some days it’s heavy weight training, others it’s Pilates or cardio.  Sometimes I just enjoy a nice leisurely walk outside but the point is movement feels good & is good for us.  Body weight exercise are some of the best & most versatile workouts you can do.  So here’s a short body weight workout to do pool side, at the beach or anywhere else.

I go for higher reps with body weight so 2-3 sets of 20 reps 

-squats 
-alternating reverse lunges
-push ups
-jumping jacks (go for 30-60 seconds at a time)
-flutter kicks

Working toward my Basi Pilates certification for the last year has improved my overall strength, stability, mobility, flexibility & control so much.  I LOVE weight training & it’s still very much a part of my routine, but doing Pilates multiple times a week is now something I look forward too so much.  Even when it’s extremely challenging (and believe me it can be) I don’t feel exhausted afterwards.  I actually feel energized!

If the scale controls your mood… we need to talk.

The scale only tells you one thing: total body weight.
It doesn’t tell you what that weight is made up of.

And if your goal is body recomposition — losing fat while building lean muscle — the scale can be incredibly misleading.

Because you could be:

• losing body fat
• gaining lean muscle
• improving hydration

…and the scale might not move at all.

Or it might even go up.

That’s why it’s so important to track more than just your weight.  I’ve been using this scale for over a year now because it gives me so many data points. 

Here are better ways to measure real progress:

1. Body Composition (this is my go-to)
I use my Bod Pod body analyzer to track:

• body fat %
• lean muscle mass
• body water %
• bone density
• metabolic age

This gives you a clear picture of what’s actually changing, not just your total weight.

2. Measurements
Track inches (every 2–4 weeks):

• waist
• hips
• thighs
• arms

Fat loss often shows up here before the scale changes.

3. Progress Photos
Take front / side / back photos consistently:

• same lighting
• same time of day
• same clothing

This is one of the most underrated tools for seeing body recomposition.

4. Strength   Performance
Ask yourself:

• Are you lifting heavier?
• Are workouts feeling stronger?
• Is your endurance improving?

Those are signs your body is adapting.

5. How You Feel
Don’t ignore this:

• energy levels
• sleep quality
• recovery

These matter for long-term results.

The goal isn’t just to weigh less.
It’s to change your body composition.

And the scale alone can’t tell you that story.

Thinking you’re prioritizing protein… when the bigger picture is missing.

Protein is essential if your goal is body recomposition — losing fat while maintaining or building lean muscle.

But simply adding foods labeled “high protein” doesn’t automatically create a balanced diet.

Right now there are a lot of ultra-processed products marketed as high-protein foods — bars, cereals, cookies, snacks — and many of them actually contain more carbohydrates than protein.

A simple rule I often share:
If the carbs are higher than the protein, it’s probably not truly a high-protein food.

(If you want to learn exactly how to evaluate that, check out my reel on how to tell if a food is truly high protein.)

A better approach is building meals around whole food protein sources, such as:

• eggs
• poultry
• fish
• Greek yogurt
• cottage cheese
• legumes
• lean meats

These foods provide not only protein, but also important nutrients that support recovery, metabolism, and overall health.

It’s also important to remember that protein alone doesn’t build muscle.

Your body needs a stimulus to direct those amino acids toward muscle repair and growth — and that stimulus comes from resistance training.

Research consistently shows that the combination of:

• adequate protein intake
• balanced macronutrients
• resistance training

is what best supports improvements in body composition.

In other words, nutrition and training work together.

One of the biggest mistakes I see women make when trying to lose fat is under-eating.

Somewhere along the way women were told that the answer to fat loss is simply eat less.

But if your calories stay too low for too long:

• your metabolism adapts
• energy drops
• muscle becomes harder to build
• fat loss can stall

And if your goal is body recomposition (losing fat while building lean muscle), your body actually needs enough fuel to do that.  A smart fat-loss phase is 6-12 weeks depending on the individual.

Autumn Calabrese Instagram - I had a very proud moment yesterday.  I got home from my photo shoot, ate a big lunch & then got a call that the team needed some new bikini pics of me.  Instantly my mind started thinking “why didn’t they ask for these earlier? I could have taken the pics at the beginning of the day before I ate.” But I threw on my bikini, went out side and snapped some pics.  I was a little surprised in all honesty by my muscle definition.

Yes, I workout regularly, I lift heavy, I challenge myself.  I eat healthy, balanced meals and don’t over indulge in treats.  But my hormones had been out of balance for  a while, I had lost muscle definition, I had gained a few pounds that weren’t coming off, it just hadn’t been as easy as it used to be. 

Here’s the thing though, I claim ownership of my  experiences, good & bad.  I use them to learn & grow.  That’s what I’ve spent the last year doing. So excited to have both of these power houses there with me.  Who you surround yourself with matter. 3 Day Split is a new program I have coming to BODi in April.  6 workouts total, 3 workouts a week, a mix of light, medium & heavy strength training as well as 1 cardio workout.  I’ve mixed and matched the workouts each week, so while you will repeat workouts, each week of the 4 week program will be a different combination.  Build strength & endurance, challenge yourself with different types of strength training from compound movements to isolated body parts.

While I’ll always encourage people to get movement in each day, I also understand that some schedules don’t always allow for that and you still want a well rounded, laid out program.  This is THAT!

2. Side plank knee tuck
3. Bicycles
4. X openers
5. Flutter kicks 

Tips: 
-Don’t grip in your neck
-If you feel it in your back, you’re not engaging your core, modify or wait to try it again until you’ve built up more strength.
-Form is more important than reps, start with lower reps 5-10 & work your way up to 15-20.

I know not everyone likes veggies, especially first thing in the morning but y’all, sometimes you have to be willing to explore, try new things and adjust your mindset around “breakfast” food.  If you’ll eat breakfast for dinner why not something you normally eat for dinner, for breakfast?! Let me know if you would try this.

It used to be that as long as I was working out regularly and eating pretty healthy I could stay lean, keep my muscle definition, have all the energy & mental clarity and feel good. At 43 that’s not the case anymore.  I have to choose my workouts more carefully.  I can’t do as much high intensity, high impact although I do need a little of it.  I need more weight training, mobility training & I definitely need my rest days.

As for my food, I focus on my gut & hormone health by I corporatist a lot more plants.  At least 30 different plants a week (veggies mostly, some fruit and whole grains), I’m very diligent about keeping added sugar to a minimum, same with alcohol.

For the last 3 months I’ve been doing a combination of reformer & Cadillac Pilates combined with Chisel (The Masters Hammer & Chisel) and following a modified 4 Week Gut Protocol eating plan.  And I love throwing in compound movements like this one to work my whole body & being my heart rate up.

I’m so grateful for my son, he is my greatest teacher, keeps me on my toes & always makes me laugh.  I’m grateful for friends that have turned into family, love me & support me no matter what. One of the most common training mistakes I see women make when trying to lose fat is relying primarily on cardio while neglecting strength training.

Cardio can absolutely support fat loss by increasing energy expenditure. But when your goal is body recomposition — losing fat while maintaining or building lean muscle — resistance training becomes essential.

Here’s why:

When calories are reduced during a fat loss phase, the body can lose both fat and lean muscle tissue if there isn’t enough stimulus to maintain muscle.

Strength training provides that stimulus.

Research consistently shows that resistance training during weight loss helps:

• preserve lean muscle mass
• support metabolic rate
• improve body composition
• increase strength and functional fitness

Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it requires energy to maintain. Preserving and building muscle helps support a healthier metabolism over time.

That’s why the goal isn’t just burning calories during a workout — it’s creating the physiological signals that support long-term body composition changes.

There’s a lot of things I do to stay fit at 43, eating healthy, watching my portion sizes, drinking plenty of water, and getting quality sleep.  But there’s one thing that is my favorite part of my day & routine…. MOVEMENT!

No matter where I am, at home, on a work trip or on vacation, I move my body every day.  Some days it’s heavy weight training, others it’s Pilates or cardio.  Sometimes I just enjoy a nice leisurely walk outside but the point is movement feels good & is good for us.  Body weight exercise are some of the best & most versatile workouts you can do.  So here’s a short body weight workout to do pool side, at the beach or anywhere else.

I go for higher reps with body weight so 2-3 sets of 20 reps 

-squats 
-alternating reverse lunges
-push ups
-jumping jacks (go for 30-60 seconds at a time)
-flutter kicks

If the scale controls your mood… we need to talk.

The scale only tells you one thing: total body weight.
It doesn’t tell you what that weight is made up of.

And if your goal is body recomposition — losing fat while building lean muscle — the scale can be incredibly misleading.

Because you could be:

• losing body fat
• gaining lean muscle
• improving hydration

…and the scale might not move at all.

That’s why it’s so important to track more than just your weight.  I’ve been using this scale for over a year now because it gives me so many data points. 

Here are better ways to measure real progress:

1. Body Composition (this is my go-to)
I use my Bod Pod body analyzer to track:

• body fat %
• lean muscle mass
• body water %
• bone density
• metabolic age

This gives you a clear picture of what’s actually changing, not just your total weight.

Track inches (every 2–4 weeks):

• waist
• hips
• thighs
• arms

Fat loss often shows up here before the scale changes.

Take front / side / back photos consistently:

• same lighting
• same time of day
• same clothing

Ask yourself:

• Are you lifting heavier?
• Are workouts feeling stronger?
• Is your endurance improving?

Those are signs your body is adapting.

Thinking you’re prioritizing protein… when the bigger picture is missing.

Protein is essential if your goal is body recomposition — losing fat while maintaining or building lean muscle.

But simply adding foods labeled “high protein” doesn’t automatically create a balanced diet.

Right now there are a lot of ultra-processed products marketed as high-protein foods — bars, cereals, cookies, snacks — and many of them actually contain more carbohydrates than protein.

A simple rule I often share:
If the carbs are higher than the protein, it’s probably not truly a high-protein food.

A better approach is building meals around whole food protein sources, such as:

• eggs
• poultry
• fish
• Greek yogurt
• cottage cheese
• legumes
• lean meats

These foods provide not only protein, but also important nutrients that support recovery, metabolism, and overall health.

It’s also important to remember that protein alone doesn’t build muscle.

Your body needs a stimulus to direct those amino acids toward muscle repair and growth — and that stimulus comes from resistance training.

Research consistently shows that the combination of:

• adequate protein intake
• balanced macronutrients
• resistance training

is what best supports improvements in body composition.

In other words, nutrition and training work together.

Instantly my mind started thinking “why didn’t they ask for these earlier? I could have taken the pics at the beginning of the day before I ate.” But I threw on my bikini, went out side and snapped some pics.  I was a little surprised in all honesty by my muscle definition.

Yes, I workout regularly, I lift heavy, I challenge myself.  I eat healthy, balanced meals and don’t over indulge in treats.  But my hormones had been out of balance for  a while, I had lost muscle definition, I had gained a few pounds that weren’t coming off, it just hadn’t been as easy as it used to be. 

Here’s the thing though, I claim ownership of my  experiences, good & bad.  I use them to learn & grow.  That’s what I’ve spent the last year doing.  Learning all about nutrition and exercise and how they impact hormone health.  There is something you can learn maybe even need to learn from every  experience. Don’t give in when it gets hard.  The last 7 months I’ve spent writing and testing my next program designed around hormone health. Yes, success is an inside job, but we all need a little support at times.

3 Day Split is a new program I have coming to BODi in April.  6 workouts total, 3 workouts a week, a mix of light, medium & heavy strength training as well as 1 cardio workout.  I’ve mixed and matched the workouts each week, so while you will repeat workouts, each week of the 4 week program will be a different combination.  Build strength & endurance, challenge yourself with different types of strength training from compound movements to isolated body parts.

While I’ll always encourage people to get movement in each day, I also understand that some schedules don’t always allow for that and you still want a well rounded, laid out program.  This is THAT!
