Lauren Liess Instagram - pitter patter 🤍 Imprinting is magical 🪿🪿 *edited for understanding- geese are possibly the strongest imprinters in the planet meaning they identify with thing (mama goose/ human etc) they see when they are babies and bond/ follow it around seeking safety and/or care. 🤍 Primrose Snowdrop are 5 day old female embden geese & they grow SO quickly!!! Geese reach their general full-grown size in only 2 months!! They currently spend their time eating (!!) sleeping, following us around on our heels & being held by someone in the family. 🤍 For now, they live in our orangery- one of my favorite spots in the house- the workroom off of our kitchen garden and will eventually move outside to a pen when it gets warmer out & their adult feathers come in. (They’ll turn white!) We will NOT be free-ranging them as our property is just too wild. ( even though we free-ranged geese for years on another property, our old sweet geese were killed almost immediately when we moved to this property.) We will be building aviaries for them to get the free-range experience and all the food nutrients they need from foraging. #liessgeese #goslings #geese

And the goslings are getting SO big!! 🌸 Snowdrop Primrose are now 7 weeks old 🪿🪿 They live in a coop outside (still heated on cold nights until all of their adult feathers are in) and we supervise their free range time grazing. We’re building an aviary & moving tractor for them. They can only come in for short jaunts now (if you know you know 🫣) but they still want to follow us everywhere. Lauren Liess Instagram - Today’s the day we launch my newest cabinet collections with @uniquekitchensandbaths !! 🌿 After years of working with various cabinet companies when designing kitchens/ bathrooms to try to get the look and feel I wanted (timeless, authentic, REAL wood finishes and hand-painted cabinets that didn’t feel like they were done in a plastic-like factory coating- you know what I’m talking about!!) and struggling to achieve it, I began working with UKB to develop a bespoke line of cabinet collections that embody the authentic, natural, timeless cupboards I’d been dreaming up. With 25 colors in my natural palette (and custom available) and a number of wax oil stains on white oak, pine, maple more, UKB’s heirloom quality cupboards are handmade by local cabinetmakers. Since we started using the collection, client after client has been blown away by the quality and craftsmanship and it’s been so rewarding. ✨ If you’re a designer, there is a trade program and UKB ships to all 50 states. Lauren Liess Instagram - Our library {books out of frame 😉} I will really miss this space when we leave… the kids play games in here and because our house is L-shaped, I can see them from the kitchen on the other side of the house and I just love it 🤍 when it’s warm out and we have the doors open, we use the patio to move from one side of the L to the other and I love how naturally things flow from inside to out here. {PSA- the juniper jute rug from my collection with @rugs_usa is back in stock and the whole collection is on sale right now!! Lauren Liess Instagram - Celebrating the traditional Swedish holiday of Saint Lucia- The Festival of the Lights. 🕯️ St.Lucia (283- 304 AD) gave all she had to deliver food and provisions to persecuted Christians hiding in the catacombs. When she was caught and refused to denounce her faith, she was martyred at only 21 years old. Known as “the saint of light” because, legend has it, when she delivered bread in the dark catacombs, she wore a wreath of candles to light her way in the darkness, because she stood fearlessly for her faith giving hope and light to others, and because her name literally means “light.” 🕯️ Hundred of years later, on Sweden’s darkest winter night, her feast day, December 13th, she became a symbol for light in the darkness, a tradition that carries on to this day. I have always loved the story of St.Lucy (which is heartbreaking yet beautiful) and so this year we celebrated and created some of our own more modern (easier-for-us-to-handle) traditions for the day. (Including a super easy saffron spelt biscuit) (My aunts also recently told me- after seeing this video- that St.Lucia is also the patron saint of the tiny Northern Italian mountain village our family is from, Giustino!) We celebrated a little early so we could share a how-to vlog about the day in hopes that others might join in for the actual holiday on December 13th. Sending light love to you all!! 🫶

I got the idea to put a cut-out from the hall to the living room when I saw light do something in a pretty way up there during our initial walk-through of the house over 4 years ago. Super simple to have done and I’m happy to have a little glowing a reminder of our faith in the house 🤍
Lauren Liess Instagram - 2023 was one of our hardest but also one of the most beautiful. We lost loved ones and saw close friends lose loved ones far too soon. I hit some goals, forgot about other ones, and both laughed and cried a lot… many moments being torn by both pain and gratitude in one breath. I pondered (far too often) how this was humanly possible always ending in the thought that I guess maybe it’s essentially and completely human. Resilience is a beautiful thing I’ve been noticing a lot and appreciating in others this year. Praying for peace in 2024 and sending love and strength to you and yours 🙏🤍 happy new year from us to you!! Xo

This baby was a STEAL and way cheaper than new copper tubs but isn’t in great shape and we still need to fix pitting etc so I’m hoping we can make it work. It was supposed to be green 😭😭😭 and I’m so sad it arrived cleaned up but we’ll figure out a way to get her exterior green again!! *** UPDATE*** my amazing (and way more observant than me!) LL&Co project manager designer just informed me that she watched this video and the WRONG copper tub was delivered!! 🙏🙏🙏 Which means my green baby should still be still green!!! (This one is also ours but for a spec project but after seeing how it feels in the barn and the views out the doors- we’re now thinking it needs to get installed there instead.) tub in a design studio anyone?? 🙋‍♀️🛁
Lauren Liess Instagram - how to train your gosling 🫶 Geese are often misjudged and -though verrrry protective- are some of the sweetest animals on the planet. They are the strongest imprinters and will follow their “mama” around everywhere. We have two female embdens, Snowdrop Primrose (the white mother goose kind) 🪿🪿 If you want super friendly cuddly geese, you need to spend lots of time with them every day, take them out on adventures (they loooove grass and you can earn their trust by picking handfuls of it for them when grazing) and make sure to het them used to lots of physical touch, pets and company. They love their people in such a trusting, beautiful way. 🫶 ps- they aren’t really potty trainable so jaunts inside need to be fast and -even then- have your cleaner & paper towels ready! #themeadowhouse #fairytalemodern #geese #liessgeese

Lauren Liess Instagram - I designed this room around gardening animals. The goal of the orangery was to create an all around space that’s a sometimes dining room/ sometimes office, where we grow plants, wash our vegetables from the garden, have fires, do crafts with the kids & hang with friends animals. The birds have surprised me this winter and we just adore our friend, “Peach” who is sure to come looking for us when we forget to put out the bird seed. She will even fly upstairs to remind us 🤣 she is now verrrry curious about the goslings!! Connecting with wild animals brings such joy and peace and making a house that encourages it was one of my biggest (and most rewarding) challenges at the Meadow. 🕊️ #themeadow

Lauren Liess Instagram - The CORRECT 200-something-year-old tub has arrived at the Meadow!! 🛁And it is green!! (Phew!!) I’ve been going back and forth internally on its positioning… I have always planned for it to span left-to-right in front of the back window (1st video/ 2nd slide) but can’t forget how much I loved baths in our old tub which faced straight out out a (side) window so I’ve been wrestling with facing it towards the back window (3rd 4th slides). The glass door to the left side will lead to a walled-in garden with outdoor showers in it and the back window (not in yet) looks out to the back yard. I love the silhouette of the tub when it’s sideways and space-wise it fits the room perfectly but I can’t unsee the thought of those facing those views straight on. Here it is both ways and I’m 99.9% on team facing the views now. It somehow feels more authentic to me, having the tub face the way we will naturally want to look but I’m a little sad to see less of the tub straight on and I don’t love having my back to the room. Something I’ve written a bit about in the past is that there are some spaces where the “enjoyment” arrangement (the one you will be using and enjoying while in the space) isn’t as pretty upon entry or to look at… in these cases I think about pros and cons (enjoyment in the room usually wins unless it’s just way too awkward-feeling.) I’ll be posting a video update of our final decision once it’s made… what would you do?? When our clients, Anne & Chris, emailed about the diamond in the rough they’d found in the mountains with peeling wallpaper and crumbling stucco it was a pinch me moment!! Lauren Liess Instagram - controversial kitchen stance- forget the work triangle!! I love a separate fridge/ microwave/ drink station so my hot (cooking chopping) lane stays free and clear 🫶 I attempt to do this in kitchens whenever I can in some way or another. One thing we’re doing differently in our next kitchen - in an attempt to reduce our microwave usage (by make it less convenient)- is we’re putting our microwave behind a door- but still it will be set apart from the main cooking areas. My newest book FEELS LIKE HOME details out this entire kitchen (whole house actually) along with some of my favorite client projects and is a good one for digging in and understanding the whys behind the designs. Lauren Liess Instagram - Welllllll… it’s been a LONG time coming but we finally have a video update of what’s been going on with our “forever” house project at the Meadow 🌿 the full episode is up on our Y O U tu be channel !!🌿 it’s been 2 years since we moved out and we’ve had some MAJOR delays and have been in our “temporary” house much longer than expected. We didn’t start our documenting much of the project so this first “episode” is the best I could do with cobbling together what footage we had but as the episodes go on it should get a bit better :) this first episode shares our story/ the project overview/ and first 2 years of the project. Things are finally cooking over there so I’ll be able to share more real time posts like I did with our current house / the “horse country modern” project!

Lauren Liess Instagram - In an unexpected turn of events ~ we’re saying goodbye to the Lost Cottage. Teary as I type, this place has been so good to us. We love it so dang much but we’re onto our next chapter, our next lost cottage. 🤍🌊 Shut the door to the cottage just now in its cleanest condition ever since all 7 of us have lived there to put it on the market… all I wanted to do was have a glass of wine and hang in the hammock to admire all of our work but it’s time to head home with crossed fingers someone falls for this place the way we did. (Ps- whoever gets this house will have the absolute BEST next door neighbors in the world!!! 😭🫶) My next book BEACH LIFE tells our story here -and other beach houses we’ve redone- and is coming out in a few short weeks!! Never did I think we’d be leaving this place just as the book launched but life does its thing and we flow with it. 🌊🤍

I love to share, chronicle, and synthesize concepts & events, and writing books helps me do just that. I often do my best thinking and internal changing at the beach where life is different and it sets me free… That got me wondering about what exactly happens to us by the ocean so I took a deep dive into the culture of beach towns, the interiors (of course!) the food, and even the science behind why people are healthier by the ocean and what the air, water, sand etc does for us. From the emotional, physical, physiological, and spiritual, this book is all about how the beach benefits us and sends us out as better versions of ourselves if we listen and let it. Lauren Liess Instagram - When rest calls 🌨️ Every now and then I hit a season of life where certain words or themes jump out at me over and over again and they won’t be ignored. I start noticing them in what I’m reading, watching, hearing etc and I begin to think about them and what they mean for my life… how I can incorporate more of this thing into it and I question why the word seems to hold meaning for me in that time. {contentment, love vibration have been some of those words for me in the past and they still jump out at me but they are old friends and nothing I’m surprised by when they pop up in funny ways.} Recently, “rest” has been coming for me… I’ve been appreciating it in various areas of life where I never really understood its role… in homemade pastas, broths and various recipes, in the land’s winter rest and my newfound patience with hard earth and bare trees, and in my own inner urge to pull back and rest, detoxing from noise and to be quite frank, the hate and anger I see here on a daily basis. Sending you love rest. (And I’d love to know- what words are calling to you right now? 🤍)
Lauren Liess Instagram - We get asked a lot about our kitchen gardens / the structure etc so I wanted to share a video of our old garden in early spring (when the spring peepers were out!) I like to build raised beds with 5-6” ledges on top so we can sit on them for weeding/ hanging. The deer did NOT ever go up into this garden which was on a terrace with very low walls and filled with pea gravel. Don’t know if it was the stucco walls or the couple of steps up/ down needed to get in but they just didn’t enter. I also love a dining table or seating area in the garden because when I’ve done all that work to make a garden want to be able to sit, hang, eat and entertain in it. A central table also gets lots of use for picking in large quantities and having somewhere to set it all. 🌿 We also had wisteria growing up the back terrace and I never had any regrets about- it never hurt the house and I loved having something to cut back and I loved the romantic unbridled feel it gave to the place. 🌿 And finally, we have seedlings going in our cold frames right now and I am beyond excited!! happy planting!!

They currently spend their time eating (!!) sleeping, following us around on our heels & being held by someone in the family. 🤍 For now, they live in our orangery- one of my favorite spots in the house- the workroom off of our kitchen garden and will eventually move outside to a pen when it gets warmer out & their adult feathers come in. (They’ll turn white!) We will NOT be free-ranging them as our property is just too wild. ( even though we free-ranged geese for years on another property, our old sweet geese were killed almost immediately when we moved to this property.) We will be building aviaries for them to get the free-range experience and all the food nutrients they need from foraging. #liessgeese #goslings #geese

When she was caught and refused to denounce her faith, she was martyred at only 21 years old. Known as “the saint of light” because, legend has it, when she delivered bread in the dark catacombs, she wore a wreath of candles to light her way in the darkness, because she stood fearlessly for her faith giving hope and light to others, and because her name literally means “light.” 🕯️ Hundred of years later, on Sweden’s darkest winter night, her feast day, December 13th, she became a symbol for light in the darkness, a tradition that carries on to this day. I have always loved the story of St.Lucy (which is heartbreaking yet beautiful) and so this year we celebrated and created some of our own more modern (easier-for-us-to-handle) traditions for the day. (Including a super easy saffron spelt biscuit) (My aunts also recently told me- after seeing this video- that St.Lucia is also the patron saint of the tiny Northern Italian mountain village our family is from, Giustino!) The original houses around here were made from leftover scrap wood from barns, shipwrecks etc. Still working on things like installing countertops and lighting. Stucco walls, planked board ceilings, painted old floorboards mixed with brick and some existing furnishings (the ikea table came with the house & we had most everything in our barn!) and a couple of new pieces (the Meadow sofa from my collection with @taylorkingfurniture an antique Swedish 1872-painted chest) have made this place into a relaxed, cozy, and flop-able beach pad. Loving it in the off-season with candles, kids and pups. The whole renovation is featured in our “Saving Lost Cottages of the Outer Banks” video series. 🤍🌊

Likes : 1194Lauren Liess - 1.2K Likes - When rest calls 🌨️ Every now and then I hit a season of life where certain words or themes jump out at me over and over again and they won’t be ignored. I start noticing them in what I’m reading, watching, hearing etc and I begin to think about them and what they mean for my life… how I can incorporate more of this thing into it and I question why the word seems to hold meaning for me in that time. {contentment, love vibration have been some of those words for me in the past and they still jump out at me but they are old friends and nothing I’m surprised by when they pop up in funny ways.} Recently, “rest” has been coming for me… I’ve been appreciating it in various areas of life where I never really understood its role… in homemade pastas, broths and various recipes, in the land’s winter rest and my newfound patience with hard earth and bare trees, and in my own inner urge to pull back and rest, detoxing from noise and to be quite frank, the hate and anger I see here on a daily basis. Sending you love rest. (And I’d love to know- what words are calling to you right now? 🤍)

Likes : 1174Lauren Liess - 1.1K Likes - We get asked a lot about our kitchen gardens / the structure etc so I wanted to share a video of our old garden in early spring (when the spring peepers were out!) I like to build raised beds with 5-6” ledges on top so we can sit on them for weeding/ hanging. The deer did NOT ever go up into this garden which was on a terrace with very low walls and filled with pea gravel. Don’t know if it was the stucco walls or the couple of steps up/ down needed to get in but they just didn’t enter. I also love a dining table or seating area in the garden because when I’ve done all that work to make a garden want to be able to sit, hang, eat and entertain in it. A central table also gets lots of use for picking in large quantities and having somewhere to set it all. 🌿 We also had wisteria growing up the back terrace and I never had any regrets about- it never hurt the house and I loved having something to cut back and I loved the romantic unbridled feel it gave to the place. 🌿 And finally, we have seedlings going in our cold frames right now and I am beyond excited!! happy planting!!
