Earlier this week I wrapped on the recording/production/mixing/mastering of my next album. Anyone that’s witnessed me in my creative element knows how laser focussed and obsessive I become over every nuance, every astronomically tiny detail, how much of a hermit I turn into as I nitpick and fine-tune endlessly. That’s been me since January, when the first song of this project started to take form in my mind. If you’ve followed my recent press interviews then you may already know the title of the album, but if you didn’t (and that’s okay, I am not the center of the universe) this LP is called ‘The Audio Shock Therapist’. I always feel guilty when I take a day to recuperate, let alone a weekend, like I’m letting myself and everyone down. But I know that it’s a toxic byproduct of the society we live in, one that expects us to keep pushing no matter what, one that shames us for slowing down for a bit. This year, so far, has been particularly exhausting; I’ve been met by uncertainties, roadblocks, showstoppers, gatekeepers, so many reasons to close up shop and call it a day. There were moments while working on my upcoming album, ‘The Audio Shock Therapist’, that I asked myself “Why do I even do this? What even is the point?”, moments when I felt utterly defeated, crushed by what often felt like the cruel nature of circumstance. We’ve been taught that success comes to those who beat out the competition. We’ve been conditioned to believe that anyone aiming for the same or similar goals as us is a rival, someone to squash. And I think there’s a reason for that; it keeps us divided, withdrawn into our own corners, plotting and scheming in our silos. Life doesn’t just happen in those moments, the ones we set our sails to; it happens especially in the ones in between. And sometimes we forget that, we forget to take pause and appreciate the scenery along the way. Hello wonderful souls, we did it! After spending the better part of last week investigating thoroughly and bombarding my music distributor with evidence I found of the existence of AI playlists targeting artists’ music on Spotify and proof that my songs that were compromised were not as a result of my actions, but that of rampant bots, my appeal was reconsidered and my album was reinstated through them. While I am happy for this victory it doesn’t end here. I am urging them to provide affected artists, whose music were also taken down, with an official appeal path. I am urging them to rethink their policies on the matter so that we can feel safe again with our music on streaming platforms in this new AI driven world. It’s been a turbulent last few days to say that least. But amidst the chaos of it all one thing became extremely clear to me… I am surrounded by so many amazing souls who want to see me succeed, who support my trajectory, who would go to bat for me, and that means the world. See when I was in the eye of the storm, and I felt like I was spiraling, I was invited on to the @sessions_with_stef podcast with @stefano_vani13 to talk about my music. And I almost rescheduled because I didn’t think I’d be the best guest with my thoughts being overrun. But the universe knew better and so the show had to go on, as they say. And I’m grateful it did.
