Caption : I am asked so often āhow the heck did you get into castles and history? Arenāt you an actress?ā Wellā¦.I am endlessly fascinated with the stories of humanity- how we love, how we fight, how our beliefs change, why we make the decisions we do. For me each castle, ruin, abbey, and church unlocks a treasure trove of stories. This picture was taken at @cullodenhouse.uk (They so graciously allowed us to shoot there) Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here for three nights before the great Battle of Culloden. The history of Scotland changed drastically at that battle⦠these are the stories that draw me to these amazing places. I can not help but be in awe of so many who came before me. .⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠#scottishhighlands #beautifulscotland #castles #travel #scotlandisnow #uk #lovescotland #scotlandphotography #adventure #travelgram #visitscotland #hiddenscotland #explorescotland #history #historyloversLikes : 9561

Caption : There is so much to tell about Raglan Castle. I could write volumes. Actually, people have. But for now Iāll just give you a fun little snippet. The Raglan Castle you see today was started by Sir William ap Thomas. He was a serious mover and a shaker. His family was not particularly wealthy or important and he was the 5th son. What he DID do was marry well. His first wife was a wealthy widow named Elizabeth and it was through her that he acquired Raglan Castle. Elizabeth died and William married another wealthy widow with three sons, Gwladus Gam. Gwladusā family had a quite the connection to the Royal Court. This helped a lot, as you can imagine. When Elizabeth, Williamās first wife, died he stayed on at Raglan castle and a few years later purchased it outright from his stepson for one thousand marks (around six hundred sixty-six pounds). William, and then his son, ended up building one of the most luxurious and glorious fortified castles in Wales. Thanks ladies.Likes : 7752

Caption : History…I watch and read a LOT of historical content. Itās hard to read about the Middle Ages without coming across something having to do with plague, the sweat, or some sort of massive famine. I am constantly so grateful for modern medicine, hygiene, antibiotics and vaccines!! The Black Death was the most fatal pandemic in human history. It had its peak in Europe from 1347 to 1351. Depending on your which sources you read, it is estimated it killed 30-60% of the European population. Let that sink in for a moment. That means the Black Death touched everyone, everything, and completely altered life for YEARS. Tintern Abbey was also one of the places massively effected by The Black Death. In 1349 there were NO new recruits at all to the Abbey. And the numbers of those that were there dwindled significantly. There was an such an extreme labour shortage everywhere that Tintern Abbey had to tenant out the granges (or farmland) that surrounded the area. šāŖļø š“ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó æ ⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠#yourbritain #yourwales #scenicbritain #england #visitwales #tinternabbey #southwales #unlimitedwales #ruins #abbey #explorewales #wales #walesonline #photosofbritain #imagesofwales #capturingbritain #gothicarchitecture #cathedral #churcharchitecture #historylovers #historicbuildings #medievalarchitecture #middleages #churchesofinstagram #historicchurch #medievalworld #architecturephotography #historicarchitecture #cymru #discovercymruLikes : 6810

Caption : One of the glorious locations we shot at for the film Mimi was at Castle Mandawa. Can you believe that utter luck and kismet that a huge castle nerd got to stay in, film, and learn Hindi while staying in A CASTLE?!?! The fort, itself, was built in the 18th Century. The town was a trading outpost and for ancient caravan routes that stopped here from China and the Middle East. šš®š³š° .⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠#mandawa #mandawahaveli #haveli #ruins #mimi #rajasthan #ancientarchitecture #castle #castlemandawaLikes : 5931

A Haveli is like manor house or stately home. There are ruined Havelis with incredible murals everywhere. You can just imagine the immense wealth this town would have had in its prime. šš®š³. #mimi #bollywood #haveli #rajasthan #mandawaLikes : 5300

Caption : I think there are a few places in Scotland that every photographer dreams of getting an āepicā shot of. Eileen Donan Castle is one of those places. I have been to this castle a half a dozen times and NOTHING. I would sigh and leave. I have even been there one the hottest day in Scottish recorded history! (Not the best photographic conditions) Even the day this picture was shot there were clear blue skies almost the whole day. But on the way home from the Isle of Skye, I asked @cmlanger50 if we could stop one more time at Eileen Donan. Caption : I will forever be entranced by nature. Hiking The Storr on the Isle of Skye in Scotland made my imagination go wild. When I go to epic landscapes like this I completely understand why we make myths and legends to help wrap our brain around the sheer awesomeness in front of us. Many of the legends on the Isle of Skye have to do with giants, fairies, brownies, Selkies (a creature that changes from seal to human, and the odd dragon thrown in for good measure. One popular legend is that this outcropping of rocks was formed when a giant died on this very spot and his thumb is one of the pointy rocks. The best part about this legend is itās also believed that this legend morphed into ta kinder, more child friendly version of the story when it was written downā¦. And that the pointed rock is really the giantās āyou-know-whatā. Some say that people went here to worship the stones in connection with fertility. šā°š“ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó “ó æ * * * * * * * * * * * #naturelovers #natureshots #nationalparkgeek #wanderlust #traveltheworld #thegreatoutdoors #optoutside #getoutstayout #choosemountains #wildernessculture #keepitwild #exploremore #landscape #passionpassport #nationalgeographic #natgeo #natgeotravel #letscamp #worldbestgram #solotravel #landscapephotography #hiking #naturephotography #getoutstayout #scotland #exploringtheglobe #čŖē¶ #macrophotography #isleofskye #theimagedLikes : 4228

Caption : You wouldnāt think to look at it, but Caerphilly Castleās design was highly influenced by Kenilworth Castle- the castle I posted two photos back. The owner of the castle, Gilbert de Clare actually fought at the very long siege at Kenilworth castle in 1266 that lasted 6 months. Caption : There is a legend that in 1127 King David I of Scotland was hunting near Edinburgh in September during The Feast of the Cross. While he was hunting, he became separated from his men and lost his way in the forest. It is said that as King David was trying to find his way back to the path and his men a giant white stag appeared and startled his horse- throwing him to the ground. The horse bolted, frightened of the stag, and there lie the King on the ground waiting to be trampled upon or run through by the antlers of the angry stag. The story then continues that a bright light in the form of a crucifix appeared in between the antlers of the stag and as David began to reach for it the stag became frightened and ran away. Or was it light that shone through the trees in the shape of the cross that blinded the stag? Or it there is even one version of the legend that says a physical cross appeared in Davidās hand and he used it to banish the stag away from him… it all depends on which source your read or what guide you happen to get at Holyrood palace. The result of this experience led King David to build a church in the very spot the stag appeared to him. The Abbey was named after the feast day – Holy Rood, or Cross. ššš»š°š¦š“ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó “ó æāØ .⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠#monk #priory #abandoned #britishhistory #abandonedplaces #history #religiousarchitecture #historicbuilding #ruins #medieval #medievalarchitecture #historylovers #medievalhistory #abbey #castlephotography #scotland ā£#churcharchitecture #medievalcastle #medievalart #medievaltimes #scotlandphotography #edinburgh #scottishhistory #holyrood #visitscotland #scotlandexplore #scotspirit #scotland_greatshots #scotlandlover #scotlandshotsLikes : 3798

Caption : Fountains Abbey is now officially my favorite ruin in the planet earth. So if anybody asks … this is it. After the Dissolution of Monasteries by Henry VIII, Fountains Abbey was sold to Sir Richard Gresham. Richard Gresham, interestingly enough, furnished Cardinal Wolsey with all his tapestries at Hampton Court Palace. And after Wolsey died, it was Grisham who paid for the cardinalās funeral. And it was also Grisham who started to dismantle the Abbey, selling off portions of it. .⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠.⣠#yourbritain #scenicbritain #england #ruins #abbey #photosofbritain #capturingbritain #gothicarchitecture #cathedral #churcharchitecture #historylovers #historicbuildings #medievalarchitecture #middleages #churchesofinstagram #historicchurch #medievalworld #architecturephotography #historicarchitecture #yorkshire #gothic #architectureporn #religiousarchitecture #churchesoftheworld #oldchurch #history #historicbuildings #historybuffLikes : 3738

Itās possible that some unknown ruin I have yet to explore may steal my heart⦠but I kind of donāt think so. Caption : Isabel de Clare was 17 years old when she was betrothed to the very well known, then 43 year old, tournament knight and soldier William Marshal. William Marshalās life is the stuff of novels (many) plays (heās mentioned by name in Shakespeareās King John), ballads (yes really…the ballad is called āQueen Elanorās Confessionā), and Hollywood Blockbuster films are made of. But Isabel is who I think about. Isabelās brother died when he was 11 or 12 and she then became one of the wealthiest heiresses in Wales and Ireland. She also became the legal ward to Henry II. Henry II promised William he could marry Isabel. William had long served Henry II, and this marriage was absolutely a reward for all he that had done. Henry II soon died after this promise was made and Richard the Lionhearted, the next king, fulfilled it. They had an apparently lavish wedding in London. William Marshallās marriage to Isabel made him go from a knight with no titles or land to one of the wealthiest men in the land. Chepstow Castle is one of the castles he inherited through Isabel. They had 10 children together. š° š“ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó æ . . . . . . . #cymru #wales #visitwales #discovercymru #discoverwales #middleages #southwales #cymraeg #ruins #igerswales #history #historyfacts #historylovers #medieval #medievalarchitecture #medievalhistory #medievalart #medievalcastle ⣠#castlesofeurope #europecastles #medievalcastle #chateau #schloss #burg #castlephotography #castello #castelli #castillo #monarchy #burgen #chepstowLikes : 3116

This bridge was built in the late 1700s after the Battle of Culloden by the English as part of a massive road and bridge network to allow easier movement for their troops. Caption : I just swoon extra hard for crumbly castles on coastlines. You know this about me. Findlater Castle could be its own television series. There is so much amazing history here- from Vikings holding the castle to Mary Queen of Scots sending an army here, and lots and lots of family intrigue. One of the Lairds of Findlater had sexual relations with his mother-in-law. He came up with the bright idea of locking up his father in a cellar, depriving him of sleep, and hopefully driving him mad so he could pull a fast one and get his fatherās lands. This plan didnāt end up working out at all and he ended up being completely disgraced and disinherited. #scotland #castles #history #historybuff #ruinsLikes : 3014
