Evelyn Edwards Instagram - One of the glorious locations we shot at for the film Mimi was at Castle Mandawa. Can you believe that utter luck and kismet that a huge castle nerd got to stay in, film, and learn Hindi while staying in A CASTLE?!?! The fort, itself, was built in the 18th Century. The town was a trading outpost and for ancient caravan routes that stopped here from China and the Middle East. šŸ’ššŸ‡®šŸ‡³šŸ°

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - The town of Mandawa in Rajasthan is just stunning beyond comprehension. I was lucky enough to fill in this town for several weeks during the film #Mimi this is a Haveli. A Haveli is like manor house or stately home. There are ruined Havelis with incredible murals everywhere. You can just imagine the immense wealth this town would have had in its prime. šŸ’ššŸ‡®šŸ‡³. #mimi #bollywood #haveli #rajasthan #mandawa
Evelyn Edwards Instagram - This is the glorious skyline of Mandawa, Rajasthan India from Castle Mandawa. Most mornings this would be the view I would wake up to before shooting the film #Mimi I would usually wake up early to get some extra Hindi dialogue practice in. I will never forget the sounds of the wild peacocks and prayers that filled the air each morning.šŸ’ššŸ‡®šŸ‡³šŸ° #rajasthan #castlemandawa #india #bollywood
Evelyn Edwards Instagram - I think there are a few places in Scotland that every photographer dreams of getting an ā€œepicā€ shot of. Eileen Donan Castle is one of those places. I have been to this castle a half a dozen times and NOTHING. I would sigh and leave. I have even been there one the hottest day in Scottish recorded history! (Not the best photographic conditions) Even the day this picture was shot there were clear blue skies almost the whole day. But on the way home from the Isle of Skye, I asked @cmlanger50 if we could stop one more time at Eileen Donan. I’m so glad I did. šŸ’ššŸ°šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁓ó æ

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - I will forever be entranced by nature. Hiking The Storr on the Isle of Skye in Scotland made my imagination go wild. When I go to epic landscapes like this I completely understand why we make myths and legends to help wrap our brain around the sheer awesomeness in front of us. Many of the legends on the Isle of Skye have to do with giants, fairies, brownies, Selkies (a creature that changes from seal to human, and the odd dragon thrown in for good measure. One popular legend is that this outcropping of rocks was formed when a giant died on this very spot and his thumb is one of the pointy rocks. The best part about this legend is it’s also believed that this legend morphed into ta kinder, more child friendly version of the story when it was written down…. And that the pointed rock is really the giant’s ā€œyou-know-whatā€. Some say that people went here to worship the stones in connection with fertility. šŸ’šā›°šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁓ó æ *

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - You wouldn’t think to look at it, but Caerphilly Castle’s design was highly influenced by Kenilworth Castle- the castle I posted two photos back. The owner of the castle, Gilbert de Clare actually fought at the very long siege at Kenilworth castle in 1266 that lasted 6 months. After having experienced that ordeal you definitely know how you’d want your castle to be built for maxim defensive ability! šŸ° šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳ó æ ⁣

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - There is a legend that in 1127 King David I of Scotland was hunting near Edinburgh in September during The Feast of the Cross. While he was hunting, he became separated from his men and lost his way in the forest. It is said that as King David was trying to find his way back to the path and his men a giant white stag appeared and startled his horse- throwing him to the ground. The horse bolted, frightened of the stag, and there lie the King on the ground waiting to be trampled upon or run through by the antlers of the angry stag. The story then continues that a bright light in the form of a crucifix appeared in between the antlers of the stag and as David began to reach for it the stag became frightened and ran away. Or was it light that shone through the trees in the shape of the cross that blinded the stag? Or it there is even one version of the legend that says a physical cross appeared in David’s hand and he used it to banish the stag away from him... it all depends on which source your read or what guide you happen to get at Holyrood palace. The result of this experience led King David to build a church in the very spot the stag appeared to him. The Abbey was named after the feast day - Holy Rood, or Cross. šŸ’ššŸ™šŸ»šŸ°šŸ¦ŒšŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁓ó æāœØ .⁣

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Fountains Abbey is now officially my favorite ruin in the planet earth. So if anybody asks ... this is it. After the Dissolution of Monasteries by Henry VIII, Fountains Abbey was sold to Sir Richard Gresham. Richard Gresham, interestingly enough, furnished Cardinal Wolsey with all his tapestries at Hampton Court Palace. And after Wolsey died, it was Grisham who paid for the cardinal’s funeral. And it was also Grisham who started to dismantle the Abbey, selling off portions of it.

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - This may be one of my favorite rooms at a ruin I have ever been to…and we came here totally by mistake. Funny how mistakes sometimes lead to the best adventures. Elgin Cathedral burned down multiple times, had the roof removed, towers collapsed, a reformation took place, and still this room managed to stand tall.

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - I am a sucker for a castle on a cliff. Especially if the castle looks like it grew out of the rock. Can you imagine abandoning this view or this glorious place? Well in 1732 Alexander MacDonald did. He opted for a new house about five miles away and took a good deal of the stone that was here with him. .⁣

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - ***NEW EPISODE LINK IN BIO*** It took 3 trips, a pandemic and the loss of a very expensive drone but the new episode is HERE! Kilchurn Castle is one of Scotland’s most popular and photographed castles. Originally built in the 15th century... in this episode I tell you all about the Campbell Clan who built this castle, some fun legends and ghost stories, and even tell you about when it was struck by lightening in 1760. AND gorgeous 4K footage!!

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - It’s true. I can’t deny it. Fountains Abbey is absolutely my favorite ruin I have ever been to. And I’ve been to A LOT. It’s possible that some unknown ruin I have yet to explore may steal my heart… but I kind of don’t think so. The detail that always boggles my mind about how Fountains Abbey became ruin is— when it was bought after the reformation the owner immediately started tearing it down to defray the cost of purchasing the land and buildings. I get it. It’s was expensive…. I just wished he hadn’t have started tearing it down. At least there is some left for us to wonder at. ⁣

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Isabel de Clare was 17 years old when she was betrothed to the very well known, then 43 year old, tournament knight and soldier William Marshal. William Marshal’s life is the stuff of novels (many) plays (he’s mentioned by name in Shakespeare’s King John), ballads (yes really...the ballad is called ā€œQueen Elanor’s Confessionā€), and Hollywood Blockbuster films are made of. But Isabel is who I think about. Isabel’s brother died when he was 11 or 12 and she then became one of the wealthiest heiresses in Wales and Ireland. She also became the legal ward to Henry II. Henry II promised William he could marry Isabel. William had long served Henry II, and this marriage was absolutely a reward for all he that had done. Henry II soon died after this promise was made and Richard the Lionhearted, the next king, fulfilled it. They had an apparently lavish wedding in London. William Marshall’s marriage to Isabel made him go from a knight with no titles or land to one of the wealthiest men in the land. Chepstow Castle is one of the castles he inherited through Isabel. They had 10 children together. šŸ° šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳ó æ .

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Our amazing time in Scotland is coming to an end …. FOR NOW! We have had such an amazing time exploring this gorgeous country for the last two months. This bridge was built in the late 1700s after the Battle of Culloden by the English as part of a massive road and bridge network to allow easier movement for their troops. This area was a resting place for drovers taking cattle from the west of Scotland to markets in the south. The walk around the Black Water River may be one of the most scenic places I’ve ever seen…and I’ve seen some pretty darn gorgeous places. *

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - I just swoon extra hard for crumbly castles on coastlines. You know this about me. Findlater Castle could be its own television series. There is so much amazing history here- from Vikings holding the castle to Mary Queen of Scots sending an army here, and lots and lots of family intrigue. One of the Lairds of Findlater had sexual relations with his mother-in-law. He came up with the bright idea of locking up his father in a cellar, depriving him of sleep, and hopefully driving him mad so he could pull a fast one and get his father’s lands. This plan didn’t end up working out at all and he ended up being completely disgraced and disinherited. #scotland #castles #history #historybuff #ruins
Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Scarborough castle... oh how glorious it is to behold on the North Yorkshire coastline. This castle has been a major strategic fortress for quite literally centuries. It’s position helped guard the against invaders from both Scotland and Europe and protected ports and trade. It has been a prison and was even bombed in World War I. And in WWII it was used as a listening post. Talk about longevity! šŸ’ššŸ°šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁄󠁮󠁧ó æ .⁣

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Kenilworth Castle is known for many things…probably the most popular history, because of the fascination of Elizabeth I, is that it was where Robert Dudley tried to woo Elizabeth for 19 days when she was 42 years old. But it was also the castle that stood through the longest battle siege in English medieval history in 1266. A whopping six months! .⁣

Evelyn Edwards Instagram - Glastonbury Tor... where myths, legends, and spirituality meet on the top of a hill. It’s considered to be one of the spiritual sites in England. Deep in the hill, it was once believed, there was a cave that you could go in to and enter the realm of fairies. It was also believed that Jesus’ uncle brought the Holy Grail here. Christ was also thought to have visited here with Joseph of Arimathea as a boy. Even the great King Arthur is thought to have visited here after his last battle and monks in Glastonbury have said they found his grave all the way back in 1191. And if you come at just the right time... you might just believe in all the magic that so many for the last 1000 years have come here to find. ⁣

Evelyn Edwards - 3.8K Likes - There is a legend that in 1127 King David I of Scotland was hunting near Edinburgh in September during The Feast of the Cross.

Evelyn Edwards - 3.7K Likes - Fountains Abbey is now officially my favorite ruin in the planet earth.

Evelyn Edwards - 3.1K Likes - Isabel de Clare was 17 years old when she was betrothed to the very well known, then 43 year old, tournament knight and soldier William Marshal.

Evelyn Edwards - 3K Likes - Our amazing time in Scotland is coming to an end …. *

Caption : Our amazing time in Scotland is coming to an end …. * * * * * * * * * * * #naturelovers #natureshots #nationalparkgeek #wanderlust #traveltheworld #thegreatoutdoors #optoutside #getoutstayout #choosemountains #wildernessculture #keepitwild #exploremore #landscape #passionpassport #nationalgeographic #natgeo #natgeotravel #letscamp #worldbestgram #solotravel #landscapephotography #hiking #naturephotography #getoutstayout #scotland #exploringtheglobe #scottishhighlands #highlands #scotland #theimaged

Evelyn Edwards - 3K Likes - I just swoon extra hard for crumbly castles on coastlines.

Evelyn Edwards - 3K Likes - Kenilworth Castle is known for many things…probably the most popular history, because of the fascination of Elizabeth I, is that it was where Robert Dudley tried to woo Elizabeth for 19 days when she was 42 years old. But it was also the castle that stood through the longest battle siege in English medieval history in 1266. A whopping six months! .⁣

Evelyn Edwards - 3K Likes - Glastonbury Tor... where myths, legends, and spirituality meet on the top of a hill. ⁣
