I think there are a few places in Scotland that every photographer dreams of getting an “epic” shot of. Eileen Donan Castle is one of those places. I have been to this castle a half a dozen times and NOTHING. I would sigh and leave. I have even been there one the hottest day in Scottish recorded history! (Not the best photographic conditions) Even the day this picture was shot there were clear blue skies almost the whole day. I will forever be entranced by nature. Hiking The Storr on the Isle of Skye in Scotland made my imagination go wild. When I go to epic landscapes like this I completely understand why we make myths and legends to help wrap our brain around the sheer awesomeness in front of us. Many of the legends on the Isle of Skye have to do with giants, fairies, brownies, Selkies (a creature that changes from seal to human, and the odd dragon thrown in for good measure. One popular legend is that this outcropping of rocks was formed when a giant died on this very spot and his thumb is one of the pointy rocks. The best part about this legend is it’s also believed that this legend morphed into ta kinder, more child friendly version of the story when it was written down…. And that the pointed rock is really the giant’s “you-know-what”. You wouldn’t think to look at it, but Caerphilly Castle’s design was highly influenced by Kenilworth Castle- the castle I posted two photos back. The owner of the castle, Gilbert de Clare actually fought at the very long siege at Kenilworth castle in 1266 that lasted 6 months. Fountains Abbey is now officially my favorite ruin in the planet earth. So if anybody asks … this is it. After the Dissolution of Monasteries by Henry VIII, Fountains Abbey was sold to Sir Richard Gresham. Richard Gresham, interestingly enough, furnished Cardinal Wolsey with all his tapestries at Hampton Court Palace. And after Wolsey died, it was Grisham who paid for the cardinal’s funeral. It’s true. I can’t deny it. Fountains Abbey is absolutely my favorite ruin I have ever been to. And I’ve been to A LOT. It’s possible that some unknown ruin I have yet to explore may steal my heart… but I kind of don’t think so. The detail that always boggles my mind about how Fountains Abbey became ruin is— when it was bought after the reformation the owner immediately started tearing it down to defray the cost of purchasing the land and buildings. I get it. It’s was expensive…. I just wished he hadn’t have started tearing it down. Our amazing time in Scotland is coming to an end …. FOR NOW! We have had such an amazing time exploring this gorgeous country for the last two months. This bridge was built in the late 1700s after the Battle of Culloden by the English as part of a massive road and bridge network to allow easier movement for their troops. This area was a resting place for drovers taking cattle from the west of Scotland to markets in the south. I just swoon extra hard for crumbly castles on coastlines. You know this about me. Findlater Castle could be its own television series. There is so much amazing history here- from Vikings holding the castle to Mary Queen of Scots sending an army here, and lots and lots of family intrigue. One of the Lairds of Findlater had sexual relations with his mother-in-law. He came up with the bright idea of locking up his father in a cellar, depriving him of sleep, and hopefully driving him mad so he could pull a fast one and get his father’s lands. It’s hard for my little brain to imagine walking away from a castle and thinking “eh, too expensive! I’m over it!” But that’s what happened to Buchanan Castle. The very names of the people who have walked through this door alone would make me want to never let it decay to this point. The man who commissioned the castle was James Graham , 4ty Duke of Montrose. James built this castle and another swanky property in London. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, played cricket, and was a conservative politician. One of his claims to fame was introducing the “The Telegraphs Act” when he was postmaster general. As a girl who grew up in Las Vegas, it is always amazing to me you be near a structure that is almost 900 years old. It’s even more fun for me to imagine all the people and activities that happened there. This tower is the Keep of Skenfrith Castle. Dirt would have been piled up around this round tower and there would have been a wooded staircase outside of the building. The basement would only have been accessed through a trap door. You might notice the larger window holes at the top. This is where the lord would have lived, on the second floor. The chambers would have had a fireplace and it’s own private latrine. Bodiam castle is so photogenic it’s silly. How did it become a ruin? Why that’s a fabulous question! Thank you for asking! During the English Civil war Bodison castle was owned by a guy named Lord Thanet. Lord Thanet was pro Royalist. In 1644 he sold the castle for £6000 to pay the fines that were placed on him from Parliament. Ardvarek Castle is one of my favorite castles to visit when doing the NC500 route in Scotland. Are there grander, more in tact castles in the Highlands of Scotland? Sure. But the stories of this castle call out to even from the highway to stop and take a moment to be with the stones. There are stories of ghosts… of prisoners…of political unrest… History was never my favorite subject in school. Music was.
