Byland Abbey is such a gem. Is it gigantic like Rieveaulx or Fountains Abbey? No. But it’s still so lovely and special. In its day, Byland Abbey was considered to be one of the finest churches in 12th in the whole of Europe. One fabulous fun fact – Byland Abbey had a manuscript collection, one one of them was a manuscripts was a collection of twelve ghost stories! Medieval ghost stories! Whenever I look at Glastonbury Tor, I marvel at how far away you can see the hill that the remaining tower of St Michael’s Church can be seen. I think about all the people who have climbed this hill in the past, and those that still do literally daily that draw inspiration from this landmark. I, too, have climbed the hill and walked up the steps of the Tor and stood in wonder. The Tor has so many legends associated with it- you could spend a lifetime following the trails of the marvelous tales of King Arthur , Avalon and the door to the fairy realm, the holy grail…. St. Hilda is such an amazing and fascinating person to me. At 33 she decided she would become a nun and in ten years she founded one of the most important centers of Christianity in the Anglo-Saxon world- Whitby Abbey. Hilda was so well regarded, it is said kings would come to her for advice. She fostered the talent of the first known English poet and six of her monks became prominent bishops. The Cloisters at Gloucester Cathedral are spectacular beyond comprehension. It boggles the mind to think that the fan vaulted ceilings were made in the late 13th century. This little chapel is one of my most favorite finds in the last several years. It is down a path you’d never know existed. A funny story…as we were trying to find the beginning of the pathway to the ruin a man in his twenties dressed in full 100% 1800s clothing came out of nowhere. He was listening to music. He couldn’t have been more than 20 feet in front of us. The main track turned and he went out of our view. There was no where to turn into- no bush or hedge to be covered by. And we we rounded the same bend he was gone. I turned to my husband and said “We’ll that was weird!” We walked farther along for about 15 or do minutes and finally found the entrance to the path… and there he was walking out of exactly the place we were going! The bride was Janet Hepburn, the sister of who would become her third husband… James Hepburn the 4th Earl of Bothwell. Crichton Castle was the Earls of Bothwell’s family home and it was James who had planned the wedding. This is the glorious Cruden Bay in Aberdeenshire. Bram Stoker visited this area regularly from 1893 to 1910 and even set two of his books here. The first two chapters of Dracula were also said to have been written while he was on vacation at Cruden Bay. If have found it incredibly difficult to have absolutely any motivation or compunction to post anything at all. My sorrow is palpable. Sometimes I cry spontaneously at random intervals during the day. When the men from 18-60 were told they had to stay in Ukraine I thought – “what if my sweet incredible husband had to do that?” We talked about it. The reality of this war is heartbreaking and unfathomable. It is not lost on me that I post pictures and videos and stories of places that were built by men and regimes who used them to further their own political aims. Structures made for the rich often on the backs of the poor. History repeats itself. I walked down these hallowed halls and this idea reverberated throughout my entire body. We think we are different, and we would never!, and how barbaric they were back then! “What silly silly things they believed!” We say. And here we are. We stand with you Ukraine- there are no words for your bravery and courage. If you can or you are inspired to- donate, write your local government.
