Kay Panabaker Instagram - About 14 and a half years ago, I was working on a new TV show that wasn’t on the air yet. I was almost 14 years old and on my first day of work with my new co-star, I was experiencing my first kiss in front of my dad. Nobody really knew either of us at that time, but most of the world knows who he is now. How fitting that his birthday this year falls on Throwback Thursday? Happy birthday to the megastar, Mr. @zacefron , whom I will always picture at this stage of our lives. Happy #TBT to the rest of the world for stumbling across this photo 😉
Kay Panabaker Instagram - You never know what's gonna impact your life 10 years later. Read It and Weep still remains one of my favorite jobs. It was my second time working in Utah in 6 months with the same crew, so it felt like going home. I got to work with my sister, my mom was with me and my dad was there as often as he could be. So it really was like home. It still brings a smile to my face when people talk about watching the movie, so in honor of 10 years since Read It and Weep first premiered, here are a couple behind the scenes photos. Thanks for 10 years everyone.
Kay Panabaker Instagram - September ‘08. I was supposed to be in Oregon shooting a movie whose funding had fallen through. My mom wanted to get my mind off of the anxiety and took me to Seaworld San Diego for a behind the scenes tour. I had no idea I would be a zookeeper myself 10 years later. But this was a momentous occasion in my life. I bonded with Rosie, a beluga whale who was slowly getting over the loss of her baby. This is a very difficult time for so many people. My heart hurts for everyone, people and animals, that have been so drastically affected by this pandemic. Stay home, so we can all get back to caring for those that matter most to us.

Kay Panabaker Instagram - Anybody that knows me knows what a terrible secret keeper I am. I am also a terrible liar and spoil most surprises. Back in January, @soulless.ging and I hatched a plan. @bigrigcarly was gonna be off work for a couple months, stuck at home, bored out of her mind, and I was gonna surprise her with a week long visit. Joe, also a terrible secret keeper, made Carly open their door yesterday and there I was, waiting to bum it for a week with my favorite girl. I think Carly is still in shock, and I am too, at our ability to pull this off. Needless to say, I am so flipping happy to be spending a week with my person. We obviously spent our first day at a local zoo but I would gladly sit on a couch all week just to spend time with Carly. Here’s to a week of video games, 24, beer, and pure bliss with the girl who completes me.

When I became a zookeeper 7!!! years ago, I was really trying to figure out who I was as a person and what was truly important to me. I could never imagined it would lead me to find such quality people who have really helped me learn to love myself. They got to celebrate their Disney anniversaries last night and E-Beth was kind enough to bring me as her date. We laughed so freaking much and ran in the rain and I really couldn’t imagine having a better time. This was absolutely a core memory for me that I will cherish forever. Shout out to these shoes! They bring me so much joy! Originally purchased as my wedding shoes (10/10, so comfy and was able to dance the night away) they stayed on all night. Every adult should own a pair. And they were only $35!!! Morale of the story: find your people, run in the rain, wear light up shoes for all the important life events.

But I was walking around Epcot tonight and despite how cold it was (and it is cold!), it was such a clear night and the park was beautiful all lit up. You’re pretty ok, Walt Disney World. Kay Panabaker Instagram - Today, I am grateful. Sure, I had to go back to the grocery store twice because I didn't properly "adult" and make a grocery list (then there are no surprises!) But I have a job I love, a roof over my head, and a mind that keeps me cognizant of just how fortunate I am. So I'm grilling, having a beer, and just being happy of where I am and what I have today. Cheers, America.
Kay Panabaker Instagram - Today was a very exciting day for me. I spent about 20 minutes watching this metallic starling hang half its body outside of its nest, trying to decide if today was the day it would attempt to move outside of its comfy home. I was able to witness the moment it catapulted itself outside and right next to the ledge I was standing next to. After the initial shock, I grabbed it and took it to our office to be banded, feathers pulled for sexing, and got a weight on my new friend. At 50g, it is definitely the smallest animal I have had under my care, but that joy and excitement of watching animals thrive while under your care never gets old. I'm also lucky to be surrounded by people that share in my excitement of these little moments. We don't name most birds in our aviary since we have over 200, but I look forward to getting to name this one once we know what it is. For now, please enjoy this grumpy muppet. Edit: this bird was confirmed to be a boy. His name is Waldo. After this photo was taken, it was about 3 weeks until my coworkers and I saw him more than every other day. We typically see birds at least once a day, but he did not vocalize as much as is typical for fledglings, making it much more difficult to locate him. He will have this plumage until about summer 2022, when he will get his adult feathers on his chest.

We rode so many coasters (some of them twice!), and got to see some pretty cool animals. But I think the highlight was just quality bonding time. We often hang out as part of our friend group, so it was nice to just have an “us” date. Thanks for the fun day, @jenn_lebeau !!! Great way to send off 2017!!!

Kay Panabaker Instagram - Miss Java Bean was another favorite of mine at the Maryland Zoo. Yes, I work with goats that I loved and I really missed them. However, there is something magical meeting new animals. She leaned into my hand that was giving her neck scratches and was snoring. 13/10, would definitely do this again. And while I didn’t get a good picture, the last animal that left a mark on me was a total surprise. It was a pretty cold and gloomy day when we went to the zoo and I didn’t think they would have any animals in their Animal Encounter area. But as we were leaving, Sprint, an Indian running duck, started calling me to me as soon as I started to walk over. Really, she was making the most adorable quacks. She kept shaking her tail for me and trying to pull up grass to give me. I may have already tried to convince the people at work that we need runner ducks....

Kay Panabaker Instagram - I went to the Maryland Zoo back in October when I was there for a wedding. I said I would spend 2 hours there..... I ended up peeling myself away after 4 hours. I fell in love with many of the animals, but Lloyd the miniature donkey was probably my favorite. I spent at least 30 minutes petting him on at least 3 separate occasions that day. @marylandzoo just did a Super Bowl pick with them and Lloyd chose the Rams to win, so that’s who I’ll be rooting for on Sunday.

Kay Panabaker Instagram - Sorry in advance for the longness of this post, but this has been a few years in the making. I woke up this morning feeling pretty sad for myself. Christmas has always been my favorite holiday, but it changes when you're an adult. Traditions take on a sad tone when it's not exactly the way it was in your childhood. And today I knew I going to be working and looking at all the family bonding occurring and constantly be reminded that my family wouldn't be waiting for me at home. It always stings a little extra, too, when you're not sure which of your family you will hear from that day. After this pout session, I thought about the last month I spent with my parents, all the laughs we had and the food we ate. And the fact that we had our own Christmas on our own day, which made it even more special. And then I thought about the fact that I even got to see my parents for the holiday season, when so many people aren't fortunate enough to. And that we all have our health, and roofs over our heads and a warm bed to sleep in. And then I really looked at the big picture. I get to go to a job I absolutely love. Even when my face is bright red and sweat is dripping everywhere, I can't help but smile at how fortunate I am to be so happy at work. I've already lived a life full of adventure and change and a lot of love and happiness. I've gotten very bad about keeping in contact with those people that have affected my life so positively, but I hope they know who they are. And I hope they, and you, and everyone else in the world, can find their happy place. Because I have found mine. It's getting to do an agility course with my goat at work, and making a poop snowman for our pig, and laughing so hard I cry, and telling stupid jokes and reminding people that life is so short and so precious. Enjoy every little moment. So Merry Christmas everyone. From me, Leia the goat, and Poop the snowman :)

It always takes me so long (about 6 hours to make these, not including the decoration) and they’re usually either under or over done. But these turned out so well!! My friend and I did these for our coworkers. Feel free to compare to our cookies from January 2016. I’d say our skills have gotten better. And the taste was fantastic! The icing consistency needed some work and didn’t have enough flavor, for my preferences. But it was good to sit, chat, and decorate our feelings.

I spent about 20 minutes watching this metallic starling hang half its body outside of its nest, trying to decide if today was the day it would attempt to move outside of its comfy home. I was able to witness the moment it catapulted itself outside and right next to the ledge I was standing next to. After the initial shock, I grabbed it and took it to our office to be banded, feathers pulled for sexing, and got a weight on my new friend. At 50g, it is definitely the smallest animal I have had under my care, but that joy and excitement of watching animals thrive while under your care never gets old. I'm also lucky to be surrounded by people that share in my excitement of these little moments. We don't name most birds in our aviary since we have over 200, but I look forward to getting to name this one once we know what it is. For now, please enjoy this grumpy muppet. Edit: this bird was confirmed to be a boy. His name is Waldo. After this photo was taken, it was about 3 weeks until my coworkers and I saw him more than every other day. We typically see birds at least once a day, but he did not vocalize as much as is typical for fledglings, making it much more difficult to locate him. He will have this plumage until about summer 2022, when he will get his adult feathers on his chest.

I spent about 20 minutes watching this metallic starling hang half its body outside of its nest, trying to decide if today was the day it would attempt to move outside of its comfy home. I was able to witness the moment it catapulted itself outside and right next to the ledge I was standing next to. After the initial shock, I grabbed it and took it to our office to be banded, feathers pulled for sexing, and got a weight on my new friend. At 50g, it is definitely the smallest animal I have had under my care, but that joy and excitement of watching animals thrive while under your care never gets old. I’m also lucky to be surrounded by people that share in my excitement of these little moments. We don’t name most birds in our aviary since we have over 200, but I look forward to getting to name this one once we know what it is. For now, please enjoy this grumpy muppet. Edit: this bird was confirmed to be a boy. His name is Waldo. After this photo was taken, it was about 3 weeks until my coworkers and I saw him more than every other day. We typically see birds at least once a day, but he did not vocalize as much as is typical for fledglings, making it much more difficult to locate him. He will have this plumage until about summer 2022, when he will get his adult feathers on his chest.

I fell in love with many of the animals, but Lloyd the miniature donkey was probably my favorite. I spent at least 30 minutes petting him on at least 3 separate occasions that day. @marylandzoo just did a Super Bowl pick with them and Lloyd chose the Rams to win, so that’s who I’ll be rooting for on Sunday.

Likes : 937Kay Panabaker - 0.9K Likes - Sorry in advance for the longness of this post, but this has been a few years in the making. I woke up this morning feeling pretty sad for myself. Christmas has always been my favorite holiday, but it changes when you're an adult. Traditions take on a sad tone when it's not exactly the way it was in your childhood. And today I knew I going to be working and looking at all the family bonding occurring and constantly be reminded that my family wouldn't be waiting for me at home. It always stings a little extra, too, when you're not sure which of your family you will hear from that day. After this pout session, I thought about the last month I spent with my parents, all the laughs we had and the food we ate. And the fact that we had our own Christmas on our own day, which made it even more special. And then I thought about the fact that I even got to see my parents for the holiday season, when so many people aren't fortunate enough to. And that we all have our health, and roofs over our heads and a warm bed to sleep in. And then I really looked at the big picture. I get to go to a job I absolutely love. Even when my face is bright red and sweat is dripping everywhere, I can't help but smile at how fortunate I am to be so happy at work. I've already lived a life full of adventure and change and a lot of love and happiness. I've gotten very bad about keeping in contact with those people that have affected my life so positively, but I hope they know who they are. And I hope they, and you, and everyone else in the world, can find their happy place. Because I have found mine. It's getting to do an agility course with my goat at work, and making a poop snowman for our pig, and laughing so hard I cry, and telling stupid jokes and reminding people that life is so short and so precious. Enjoy every little moment. So Merry Christmas everyone. From me, Leia the goat, and Poop the snowman :)
