IN EDINBURGH To give the Alternative MacTaggart speech tomorrow at the Edinburgh TV Festival where so many of the bosses and producers come together for a few days @edinburghtvfest #EDTVFEST After being on the first show ever on Channel 4 – Countdown back in 1982, I’ve worked for all the major channels, made around 9/10,000 shows After research shows that the TV industry is one of the worst to employ people from a working class background – just 8% – and audiences are dropping through the floor A quarter of people in the UK now don’t watch broadcast television at all, the disconnect is greater than ever. At the current rate of loss we could be talking about less than half of people watching broadcast telly by the time of the next election. So my speech is called “Television, Snobbery and London” And then being interviewed by the lovely @charlenewhite 🙏 It’s on at 11am tomorrow – I think available on You Tube maybe live but certainly later See you there x

“TELEVISION, SNOBBERY AND LONDON” Just delivered my Alternative MacTaggart Lecture at the @edinburghtvfest #EDTVFEST So many things needed to be said I’ve worked in TV for 42 years – an industry which has changed radically With evidence and data I told how we are now an industry of regional snobbery, class snobbery and educational snobbery in a way which has never been as pronounced Meanwhile our audiences are falling dramatically At the current drop rate it’s likely that only half of people in the UK will be watching broadcast TV by the time of the next general election. And I don’t blame people for switching off. Just 8% of the industry has a working class background, worse even than banking! And so people turn to social media and why wouldn’t they? If your life and your views and your town or city or region is never shown, why the hell should you bother watching 👀 Politicians out of touch? Absolutely The Westminster Bubble out of touch including many political programmes? Totally And TV itself losing touch? The numbers say yes Trust in the BBC has plummeted Trust in mainstream media has plummeted And what comes into play? The far right fills that vacuum I spoke of the platforming and normalising of Nigel Farage on I’m A Celebrity which was wrong. I spoke of the Tufton St right wing lobbyists who the BBC platforms endlessly on their political shows as independent voices. They won’t declare where they get their funding and break all rules on impartiality but the BBC continues to show them to you as impartial observers. They aren’t and the BBC is wrong to do so. I spoke of growing up in poverty myself and how much easier it was back in the 1980s to get into TV from that background than it is today. Speaking from the heart and without apology, I was tearful when the room stood up to give me a long standing ovation. It’s time we all were stronger together and believe that we can change things BECAUSE WE CAN. Thank you @charlenewhite for interviewing me and giving your story too. So powerful. The speech will be available online soon and I’ll post details then In the meantime sending love❤️ Photo credit Shutterstock for Edinburgh TV Fest

LBC and Keir Starmer Inundated with calls and messages @LBC 🙏 Thank you for some frank conversations and fascinating stories ❤️ In the first hour we were giving Labour a mid term report (term being first 100 days) My tongue in cheek Teacher’s School Report ⬇️ Handling of the riots ✅ Teachers and nurses pay rise ✅ Junior doctors resolution ✅ Scrapping £700 million Tory Rwanda plan ✅ Extreme misogyny to be made illegal ✅ Keeping 2 child benefit cap ❎ Scrapping winter fuel allowance for 10 million pensioners – far too harsh – a huge mistake which we spoke about for an hour yday and when it was announced ❎ Oil field expansion ❎ Lots of other matters such as housing plans sound good in principle, but the jury is out My school report for Keir Starmer midway through his first 100 days…. “Young Starmer started well as class prefect, his essay on immigration earned him a Grade A. However, his sociology studies seem lacking in places particularly when it comes to his elders and their situation. The module on decisions between heating and eating seem to have evaded him. Maths is reasonable but work on negative and imaginary numbers will need close attention. He gets on well with the class except for the usual suspects. He has pleased many in his teamwork but alienated others. All in all, he has the ability to become a strong class leader and take people with him, but needs to work harder in how he expresses this to others. Grade B Marks out of 10, a 5-6 so far The last prefect was a 2, so Starmer has improved on matters but a long long way to go.”

AUDIOBOOK “NOW WHAT?” I spent last week in the audio book recording studio, bringing my new book, “Now What? On a Mission to Fix Broken Britain,” to life ❤️ The journos and people in the studio say it makes them laugh out loud AND makes them cross about our political system when you see it explained simply – as I try to do Part story, part diary, part analysis of narcissists and a plan for the future – I really hope you like it xx Here’s a glimpse into what the book is all about: “What this book aims to do is to give you the strength to question matters. Politicians aren’t our masters. They aren’t better than us. They’re just humans. And as we all know, humans vary widely. So this is a book for people who may not normally think about politics. A book for those who have been made to feel as though politics isn’t for them. A book for good, kind people who want society to be fairer and who want to feel safe and cared for once again. I’ll show you how you can make a difference. I really want this book to inspire you, to want to know more. I want it to inspire you to ask the simple questions and to not feel afraid to ask them. I want you to feel the righteous anger of someone who’s been lied to constantly, and doesn’t want that to happen again. Above all, I want to persuade you that politics really is something which affects every part of your life, and you can use your voice to change things.” NOW WHAT? launches in three weeks (12 Sep), and I’m counting down the days until then Pre-order your copy now using the 🔗 in my bio! @headlinebooks
