🌞💧 Your gentle reminder to stay hydrated in the summer heat! Here’s a throwback to 1962, featuring a young Dr. Jane Goodall drinking from a stream in Gombe — the site of her groundbreaking chimpanzee observations. (And now home to the longest-running wild chimpanzee study at JGI’s Gombe Stream Research Center!) Whether you’re exploring the wild or just enjoying your backyard, remember to keep hydrated (with clean drinking water!) and to take care of yourself 💚 📷 Hugo van Lawick #StayHydrated #HeatWave #JaneGoodall #JaneGoodallInstitute #Throwback #WildlifeResearch #FreshWater #Outdoors #Hydration

🎥🌿 “Can we play with monkeys?” 🙊 Check out Dr. Jane Goodall’s insightful response to this common question! Dr. Goodall explains why it’s crucial not to interact with monkeys and apes in the wild. Our diseases can affect them, and theirs can affect us. We need to respect their natural behaviors in their habitats. Let’s enjoy observing these amazing animals from afar to keep both them and ourselves healthy and safe. 💚🐵 📸 credit: Sylvie Alt Text Video of Dr. Jane Goodall reading a question from a fan in her office at the JGI USA headquarters in Washington DC. 📢🐵 We think it’s a good time for this reminder: Chimpanzees are wild animals and should never be kept as pets or for entertainment. If you’ve followed us for awhile, you may have noticed that we always include a disclaimer on photos that show humans and wildlife in close proximity. That’s because we’ve learned a lot about how to best interact with wildlife — most importantly, that the best way to appreciate chimpanzees and other wildlife is from a distance. That said, a significant part of our work at JGI is caring for captive chimpanzees, often rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. We make every effort to properly care for them, treat them with dignity, and improve their lives through our facilities like JGI’s Tchimpounga sanctuary. Tchimpounga caregivers and chimpanzees DO interact, such as to provide medical care. And since infant great apes require constant care (they are often stolen from their mothers in the wild before they are rescued and brought to Tchimpounga), they have a “surrogate mother” at the sanctuary who supports them 24/7. 👇 Here are a few signs of a positive interactions in photos and film. 👉 Swipe to learn more, including how to spot red flags! 🌱 Chimpanzees are in natural settings 🌱 Chimpanzees aren’t being treated as humans (some exceptions – in captivity, infant chimps are bottle fed for nourishment, and all chimpanzees are given enrichment. They easily get bored!) 🌱 Chimpanzees are in an accredited sanctuary, being cared for by trained professionals We are incredibly grateful to all of the caretakers, including those at JGI’s Tchimpounga sanctuary, who take the time to properly care for and improve the lives of captive chimpanzees 🫶 DISCLAIMER: *The Jane Goodall Institute does not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. This represents a sanctuary context with trained professionals.* 📸: Fernando Turmo #ChimpSanity #ChimpCrazy #ForeverWild

“This new focus on the plight of chimpanzees used for entertainment and as ‘pets’ gives us the opportunity to throw a light on the way that chimpanzees are treated in some captive conditions. Chimpanzees (and other wild animals) should never be kept as pets or for entertainment. It is the demand for chimpanzees to be sold as pets or for inappropriate entertainment for tourists, that is fueling this trade — one of the main threats to these apes in some parts of Africa. Let us be thankful to the many people working today to properly care for and improve the lives of rescued chimpanzees in reputable sanctuaries and zoos.” – Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, ethologist and conservationist, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, and U.N. Our conservation science team is always looking for ways to invest in our global network of GIS professionals! 🗺️🌍 Earlier this year, the Geographic Information System (GIS) leads from @janegoodallinstitute_tanzania , @janegoodall_ug, and @janegoodallinst got together for a “GIS Fundis” training workshop. Fundi is a Swahili word that translates to a mechanic or someone else who fixes things — an expert in their field. During this workshop, GIS leads trained together on the latest @esrigram ArcGIS tools to support our research, community-led conservation, and education efforts. They also tested out the automated flying capabilities of the @djiglobal drone seen here by invitation and in partnership with @tanzania_forest to improve monitoring of Jambiani Muyuni Forest — a pilot project kindly funded by @apple. Trainings like this show our GIS leads how to use drone imagery to measure the forest health over critical areas of our conservation work, informing local decision makers’ strategies and interventions. This was just the first of many more GIS Fundis sessions to come. With ongoing efforts to standardize tools and data, collaboration through JGI’s science and knowledge platform will be more effective than ever! 🛰️🌿 📸 credits: JGI/Lilian Pintea and JGI/Roots & Shoots volunteer . . . . . #GIS #dronemapping #geospatialtechnology #techforconservation #techforgood #janegoodall #janegoodallinstitute #chimpanzees #conservation #nonprofit #chimpanzeeconservation #interconnected #communityledconservation #communityconservation #wildlife #africanwildlife #tacare

🌳🐵🔊 Sound up! Looking for an ape-pealing ASMR forest adventure with your favorite chimpanzees? Join the young chimps of JGI’s Tchimpounga Sanctuary Nursery Group on one of their daily excursions! At the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center, JGI caregivers rescue, nurture, and rehabilitate chimpanzees, many of whom arrive traumatized and injured from the illegal wildlife trade. The youngest rescues join the Nursery Group, where their daily routine includes supervised forest excursions. Recently, JGI staff cleared away dense vegetation to create a safe playground for these chimps. In the forest, they explore, climb tall trees, groom each other, nap, and play together. They’ve found a new family and a second chance at a happy life. 🌿💚 You can support the Jane Goodall Institute’s work by becoming a Chimpanzee Guardian today. Thanks to the expert care of JGI staff and the generous support of people like you, Tchimpounga offers these chimps a second chance —> LINK IN BIO 🎥 JGI/Fernando Turmo Alt Text: Young chimpanzees of the Tchimpounga Sanctuary Nursery Group playing and exploring in a supervised forest area. #ChimpanzeeRescue #TchimpoungaSanctuary #ASMR #ForestAdventure #JaneGoodallInstitute #WildlifeRescue #Conservation #SaveTheChimps #Apes #Primates #Chimpanzees
