John Daub Instagram - This mysterious Japanese train station is 230 feet (70m) under a mountain, 486 steps to the surface, no elevator! It’s a hike, try commuting everyday! Doai Station on the Joetsu Line is quite an experience, a real adventure.
John Daub Instagram - 1998 🎌 My move to Japan, 25 years ago! Philly → Detroit → Osaka (Kansai) for $588 (Northwest Airlines) one way to start my job as an English teacher. 1998 was an amazing year! When was your first trip to Japan?
John Daub Instagram - Okinawa’s Churaumi Aquafium was the world’s largest until 2005, this main tank holds 1.98M gallons of water? The glass 60cm / 24 inches thick. Larger aquariums are no.2 Dubai Mall and no.1 Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. #onlyinjapan #aquarium
John Daub Instagram - These students I taught would be 35 years old now! I often wonder how my former students from Okazaki 愛知県岡崎市are doing. Teaching English in Japan is the gateway to working here for most English speakers, Americans. I came in ‘98 and taught for 7 years - on and off - backpacking the world between contracts, returning to save up again. 10 years before YouTube! (What a shame 😂) I got to live in 16 different Japanese cities and also see 80 countries as a backpacker during this time. Life is an adventure - what’s the next adventure for you?
John Daub Instagram - YouTube FanFest “1 Million Subscriber Award” event was pretty incredible, the only non-Japanese creator there and an honor to receive it from @hikakin — one day I’ll be back there again with even more excitement! If you can see it, believe in it — and it can be done ٩(^‿^)۶ @youtube

John Daub Instagram - “You are part of the problem” 🗻📸🎌🤳 to the many commenters on my YouTube live stream stating I shouldn’t be covering this Lawson-Fuji tourist photo spot, I got it. I found another one 15 min away from the *original* MtFuji-Lawson store near Kawaguchiko Station. I was getting a coffee on the way to Fujiyoshida and saw the crowd … this one has a better view! And buses stopping! The “crisis” has moved 1.4km or a mile to the west 😂 I refuse to tell you exactly where. I want to be part of the solution! Please do not ask me where 🤐 #lawson #mtfuji #mtfujiphoto_ig

John Daub Instagram - Japan’s Giant Snow Wall corridor opens mid-April along the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Pass and goes on until June. The walls are over 20m high / 66ft and seeing the bus drive through the corridor is kind of funny and surreal. It’s an hour from Toyama Station and worth a visit. #japan #snowwall #tateyamakurobealpineroute

John Daub Instagram - Tokyo’s Cherry Blossom Season started strong today — a national holiday, Ueno Park was packed, the Sakura blossoms 50% bloomed. Events back like 2019. Tomorrow and this week brings rain so fingers crossed the city gets another dry day like this. Dominos JP was delivering to Hanami-goers! Wow (video at the end) #uenopark

John Daub Instagram - It’s hard not to smile when Tokyo’s looking like this, 100% fully bloomed Cherry Blossoms 🌸 with a 3 year old who loves silly faces, it’s hard to know when he’s really smiling, but today maybe a little easier. The Sakura should be around for a few more days, weather permitting. After the first rain or wind, they usually blow away — and you can catch them again 100km north as they start to bloom up in Tohoku or in the mountains of Nagano. Is the spring better than the fall? I’d say so. Longer days are here again ☀️ and the warmer weather, soon enough.

John Daub Instagram - 5.3 Million Blue Flowers, Nemophilia or baby blue-eyes, bloom in Hitachi, Japan creating a surreal scene that follows the beauty of the Cherry Blossom season so perfectly. Hitachi Seaside Park created this in 2001 and it’s been a hit with visitors! 90 min north of Tokyo, it’s time to get out of the city. When? Mid April to Early May 🤩 Entry is ¥800 or about $5 #hitachiseasidepark #blueflowers #japan #nemophilia
John Daub Instagram - Mt Fuji from the steps to the top of Arakurayama Sengen Park (Fujiyoshida City) with pagoda. Note: 99% of the people here were non-Japanese! I didn’t see or meet any Japanese except Kanae 😂 and a few guides. English, Thai, Chinese, Canadian (eh) and some German, Italian and Polish — super interesting in that respect. You MUST come before 9:30am or the sun is just too bright, the haze will dull the view. Evening or late afternoon after 16:00 has a lovely backlight. Lighting is EVERYTHING. In the AM, it’s coming perfectly to Mt Fuji for the shot. Don’t be late (like us) 😂 🗻 does anyone know the history behind this spot? #fujiyoshida #arakurayamasengenpark

John Daub Instagram - The Fujisan Yumeno Bridge in Fuji City, a 25 min walk from Shin-Fuji Station (Shinkansen) or 7 min bicycle ride, rentals are ¥200 ($1.40) for the day from the tourist office inside the station 🚉 no one there when I arrived at 9am, small groups came by taxi the next 2 hours 😂 a few people walked. Some total divas! Most polite, for a photo and moved on — so, worth the visit? It takes 1 hour 15 min from Tokyo Station to get here. For me, I’d say … #fujisteps #fujicity #mtfuji

John Daub Instagram - Kawabe-san is 93 years old. He was 34 when he met Sean Connery in a movie that inspired me, when 007 came to Japan! Today I met him and heard his story, shared an incredible experience with him that took us both back to 1966 when a sleepy fishing village became a world wide sensation. His smile has not changed, with me or Connery. You Only Live Twice. Kawabe-san was a assistant director of the film, then a producer at Shochiku and now, in 2023, my friend. Thank you for an amazing day! Dream big, life will come full circle and you’ll be on top of it all — then what do you do 😂 ?? Tell an amazing story!

John Daub Instagram - Classic! When a kid meets Santa at a shopping mall for the first time, it’s a little shocking — for ANY KID, not just one from Tokyo — and we think next year, he may be able to tell Santa what he really wants for Christmas. We don’t have mall Santas🎅 in Japan, but maybe we should! They charged $54 (¥7800) for digital 1Mb sized photos with 2-5x7 prints! It’s quite a good business for the “North Pole” but we support Santa and his helpers even if some need a lesson in customer service 😂 shout out to the Christmas Carolers! Felt like Christmas!!🎄#christmasspirit
John Daub Instagram - I may not get my hat back 😳 The Somei Yoshino Sakura 🌸 Blossoms are at their end. If the wind doesn’t blow it away 🌬️ or the rain doesn’t wash it away, it’ll be the fresh green leaves shooting out! But just maybe, we’ve got 3 more days on the back end including this weekend 😁 who’s in #tokyo enjoying it right now?
John Daub Instagram - Turned my old sneakers into SAMURAI BLUE works of art 👟 Japanese Indigo Dyeing is ancient, going back to the Sengoku Period a 1000 years ago so this blue color is special, called KACHI-IRO (Winning Color) for winning in battle. It’s the color of the Japanese National Soccer Team - because they rarely won in the 1980s. Their fortunes changes with this color change, and better players 😉 and for my feet, I’ll have an extra spring in my step with a pair of jeans, they look awesome! Thank you @allbirdsjapan for doing this, recycling old shoes to make something new again ❤️
John Daub Instagram - In search of Tokyo’s BIGGEST Christmas Trees, we found 3 good candidates around Tokyo Station’s Marunouchi area — inside the Kitte Building is always a massive 🎄🤩 and the Maru Building has Disney themed tree! John Daub Instagram - Japan’s most beautiful tree is a 1000 year old Takizakura waterfall cherry blossom in Miharu, Fukushima seen here from 2km away. The area around the tree hasn’t always been this beautiful but the tree itself hasn’t change much in last couple of hundred years. It connects so many generations in Miharu. It’s at full blooms now until … catch it while you can.

John Daub Instagram - Shinjuku’s alleys are an experience and Omoide-Yokocho is a must-visit. It’s no longer a must-eat since many shops have changed owners, quality is not the same (nor the prices) but walking through there, even in the afternoon, is like going back in time. These shacks came up after WWII from necessity and have evolved a little but still feels like the old Showa era. The name means “memory lane” but had been called “piss alley” in its prime … wonder why 😂 you’ll find more tourists than locals but your photos will be incredible! Golden Gai (old shack bars) is nearby and places like Shinbashi, Okachimachi offer an option to old school outdoor urban eating. In modern Japan though, it’s not common anymore. #shinjuku #omoideyokocho #goldengai #onlyinjapan

John Daub Instagram - The Deer of Nara 🦌 cannot be ignored, their photobombing has reached a new height. Seriously, I’ve got no Shika Sembei (Deer Crackers) for you mate! Should the city stop allowing tourists to feed the deer? Saw 3 near misses with cars, deer running across roads to get to tourists with food and yet — they’re an inseparable part of the city’s image 😂 cute — but dangerous. Now how do I clean off the bottom of my shoes 💩 before getting on the Shinkansen?

John Daub Instagram - Interviewed a 92 year old survivor of the Atomic Bomb who was 14 at the time in the latest video - she walked through the city after the blast and shared what she saw, but I went down there to hear about how she also went back to work 72 hours later (just 3 days after the bomb!) on the repaired Street Cars, just 700-900 meters away from the hypocenter. Those street cars were bombed out, passengers lost — then repaired and put back into service, still running in 2023! Amazing, Living history! #hiroshima

John Daub Instagram - Tokyo: The first wind and rain after full bloom usually means the end of the Cherry Blossom season in the capital. Sure, some late bloomers remain, a few trees will have blossoms for a week more, but it is all down hill for them — unless you go uphill! News reports that the blossoms move north 20km / day so up in Fukushima and Yamagata, it’s just starting! And at elevation like Mt Takao and Okuyama in Tokyo 😉

I am wearing my Ohio State Buckeyes and helping the embassy and organization. Before ONLY in JAPAN, I did a lot of stuff like this, unpredictable adventures in life and entertainment 😂 10 years later, what has really changed! Hahaha!

The Sakura should be around for a few more days, weather permitting. After the first rain or wind, they usually blow away — and you can catch them again 100km north as they start to bloom up in Tohoku or in the mountains of Nagano. Is the spring better than the fall? I’d say so. Longer days are here again ☀️ and the warmer weather, soon enough.

Some total divas! Most polite, for a photo and moved on — so, worth the visit? It takes 1 hour 15 min from Tokyo Station to get here. For me, I’d say … #fujisteps #fujicity #mtfuji

The area around the tree hasn’t always been this beautiful but the tree itself hasn’t change much in last couple of hundred years. It connects so many generations in Miharu. It’s at full blooms now until … catch it while you can.

John Daub - 1.5K Likes - Shinjuku’s alleys are an experience and Omoide-Yokocho is a must-visit.

John Daub - 1.4K Likes - Interviewed a 92 year old survivor of the Atomic Bomb who was 14 at the time in the latest video - she walked through the city after the blast and shared what she saw, but I went down there to hear about how she also went back to work 72 hours later (just 3 days after the bomb!) on the repaired Street Cars, just 700-900 meters away from the hypocenter. Those street cars were bombed out, passengers lost — then repaired and put back into service, still running in 2023! Amazing, Living history! #hiroshima
