Today in Tokyo, the Somei Yoshino Cherry Blossoms bloomed – 11 days late! (FINALLY!) I was utterly confused to see @natgeo post about how they bloomed EARLY this year because of global warming, talked about Kyoto blossoms in the past tense? — pretty embarrassing, but I’ve made mistakes before 🤷🏻♂️ what do you think?

This Morning Market Tour included a walk in freezer, similar to the coldest town in the world at -50C, at Yokohama City Central Wholesale Market, it’s an attraction! After this, an ate my way back to the entrance of the Exploration Tour!
Identified! The “Piss Clam,”Geoduck #グイダック or Ipswich Clam is one of many seafood I’d never heard of before I took a Market Tour, the vendor held one up and it started to piss at me. You can eat them, they’re quite good, but after seeing them, it might be one of few foods I would pass on. I love seeing new things and the Yokohama City Central Market “Exploration” Tour was quite good, esp the piss clams, anago, shrimp and maguro! They’re in season now and so is the tour: https://www.hamaoroshi.or.jp/observe?lang=en @y.c.f.m #巨大みる貝

Hidden Gems in Japan to visit: The Old Japan feel many tourists look for is everywhere around the countryside, you have to get off the beaten path. MURAKAMI, NIIGATA (map at the end) has a street lined with Edo period buildings, they specialized in local salmon. It’s a close walk from Murakami Station to “Sennen Salmon Kikkawa“ where you can walk in and see a ton of fresh caught hanging salmon! Across the street is a 100 year old Japanese sweets shop! And many sake breweries! The food is incredible. Murakami is on the way to Yamagata – near Yonezawa and Ginzan Onsen, but you won’t find many tourists here which is a gem 💎 tourist office at the train station has a ton of info in English. More Gems around Japan coming soon. Thank you @japan_travel.nature for inviting me to see the city in 2022!

At work, it was cold in Niigata today and this evening — the Urasa “Naked Man Festival” was quite an adventure, and adventure must have high degrees of discomfort. More to follow 😂
Akihabara is one Tokyo neighborhood all tourists seem attracted to and after many years living here, I can’t fully understand why 😂 the subculture reputation is strong but the maid cafe boom peaked years ago, game centers are declining but all over Tokyo — but it is convenient, on the Yamanote Line, between Ueno, Ginza, Asakusabashi. (See Poll in post) ▶︎ There are 2 towns around this area that I think are more interesting 😉 but what do you think? Which is more fun and why? ◀︎ Akiba’s “Electric Town” vibe from the 1960s-70s has been nearly wiped away because you can get everything on Amazon.co.jp. 1980s computer shops are hard to find. I don’t know how it’ll evolve in 10 years, but it won’t look the same. Thank you @dean_newcombe for joining me in a walk there from Hibiya / Ginza yesterday. Note: for the poll, what’s YOUR 1st pick of the 3 Tokyo Neighborhoods to stay and or visit. Mine are listed in the picks. #akihabara #tokyo #asakusabashi
Japanese Indigo Dyeing called Aizome dates back 1000 years to the Sengoku period (time of war) when Samurai called it “Kachi-iro” – Winning Color! for battle! In the 1980’s Japan’s National Soccer ⚽️ Team changed their colors from red & white 🇯🇵 to Kachi-iro“Samurai Blue” and started winning. It’s Japan’s real national color 😉 and for me, I’ll be wearing it on my hands for 2 weeks! I dyed my @allbirdsjapan shoes blue and it looks incredible! It’s a great way to recycle old shoes and make them new again, sustainable 🌎 to reuse what we have! Brilliant idea! 👟❤️
