January 2, 1993: “I’m Every Woman” was released as the second single from ‘The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album.’ Written by Ashford & Simpson and originally recorded by Chaka Khan, Whitney’s version was produced by Narada Michael Walden with additional remix production by Clivillés and Cole (who also performed at Whitney’s wedding!) The single was a huge hit worldwide, in the U.S. peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, #1 on the Dance Club Songs Chart and #5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It also made the Adult Contemporary Charts. Entertainment Weekly called Whitney’s version “triumphant” — and it won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Music Video and a GRAMMY nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female. Directed by Randee St. Nicholas, the music video included appearances by Chaka Khan, Cissy Houston, TLC, Valerie Simpson and a pregnant Whitney 🤗

This time last year, ‘I Go To The Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston’ was recognized by The New York Times as one of the best collections released in 2023! The album “centers Houston’s lifelong connection to gospel music” and its “most precious gem is ‘Testimony,’ an upbeat, foot-stomping song Houston recorded in 1981, when she was just 17. Her voice, fascinatingly, was still unformed compared to the immaculate instrument she’d soon learn how to command, but, as ever, it was alive with passion and spirit.” Featuring 14 tracks, including 6 never-before-released songs (3 from when she was 17) the album reached #2 on the Billboard Gospel Album Chart.
On February 24, 1997, “Step By Step” was released in the U.S. as a single from ‘The Preacher’s Wife: Original Soundtrack Album.’ The song was originally written and recorded by Annie Lennox in 1992 — Whitney’s version was reworked as more R&B/pop with some new lyrics and omitted a portion of the bridge, with Annie singing backup vocals. Billboard called it “one of the shining moments” on the soundtrack. “Step By Step” reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, #12 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #29 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as well as charting successfully around the globe. The music video was directed by Paul Hunter 🎬
