On October 26 & 27 of 1998, Whitney and @mariahcarey filmed the video for “When You Believe” inside the main auditorium of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The video features Houston and Carey singing in the ornate auditorium with scenes from the Dreamworks film “The Prince of Egypt” projected onto a large screen behind them.

HBO (who broadcasted the special) worked to make it available to over 50 million cable households. Did you know? Because there were more troops than seats for the Easter Sunday show, 3,000 people from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard were invited to the dress rehearsal. 🎬

“One of Those Days” from Whitney’s fifth studio album ‘Just Whitney’ was released on this day in 2002. Recorded in Atlanta, Georgia this song included interpolation of the Isley Brothers’ “Between The Sheets.” Ronald Isley even makes a cameo appearance in the music video! The song peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #29 on the R&B Charts.

For the 25th anniversary of Whitney’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in 2016, Danyel Smith of ESPN wrote: “Like the best heroes, Whitney — the black girl from Jersey who worked her way to global stardom … — makes bravery look easy. … She is calmly joyful — cool, actually, and free of fear. And when she arrives at Oh, say [cymbal] does our star- [cymbal] spangled banner yet wave, she moves to lift the crowd. It’s a question. It’s always been a question. And she sings it like an answer. … Whitney’s version made it all absolute, for a moment. Her arms were wide and reaching slightly up at the end, a pose familiar to many Americans, across races. Her head was back, as one’s can be when victorious, and as one’s can be when asking for and ecstatically receiving the glory of God.” On this day in 2001, the second release of “The Star Spangled Banner” peaked at #30 on the Billboard R&B Charts. Whitney’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” remains a perennial favorite, cited every year by most media organizations as the best performance of the anthem of all time.
On October 22, 1988, “One Moment In Time” peaked at #22 on the R&B Singles Chart. (It had reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.) It was the official song of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea and the title track for the 1988 Summer Olympics Album. Released as a worldwide single, “One Moment In Time” reached #1 in the U.K. and Germany, and also performed well in other countries. Whitney received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, and even opened the award show with a live performance of the song, which was later released on the compilation albums ‘Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances’ and ‘Grammy’s Greatest Moments, Vol II.’
