When the fires started raging Tuesday, I was like most of you, a witness to uncontrollable tragedy. I sat in my comfortable home, filled with empathy for those running for safety. Early evening yesterday, a wind shift brought a new “Sunset Fire” over the Hollywood Hills and heading south toward where Bonnie and I live. We packed important papers, filled the car with gas. I walked around my home, where myriad moments of photographs and wall murals shocked me into imagining how I might start all over, if I were to come home and find rubble, as many people here are experiencing now. The scare is over for us in this area now, but the commitment to somehow help these folks who have lost so very much runs deep. Let’s research what we all can do for them, shall we?

Many ancient cultures honored this very day, the Winter Solstice. Here are Bonnie and me in Egypt in 2021. Our minds were blown to learn that some 5,000 years ago the architects of the pyramids built an opening to allow the pinpoint light of the Winter Solstice to penetrate a hole in the stone and flow down to bathe the sarcophagus of the king. Today, December 21, signals the hope of more light to come. Each coming day will now give us more daylight, more motivation to see and appreciate the wondrous world around us. Happy Solstice Day! #nyad #egypt #solstice #greatpyramid

From the Alps to Lindt chocolate to lots of art to the joy of speaking both German and French, our week in Switzerland has been a grand adventure. Basel was our favorite. Lucerne a close second. #nyad

@diananyad cultivated a “steel trap mind” to become the first person to swim the 110-mile stretch from Florida to Cuba. But before swimming with the sharks, she had to contend with debilitating trauma. Here’s how she overcame it.
Your Home Town I’ve always been curious about whether most of us stay in or return to our Home Towns to live later in life, or whether we choose a different environment. My Home Town was Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and even though I’ve chosen to live my adult life in both New York City and Los Angeles, I often get the chance to spend some time in Lauderdale, which was the case the last couple of days. The balmy nights, the beautiful sub-tropical clouds, the warm ocean all bring back a sensuality I respond to much more than the freezing Pacific and cold nights of the LA desert climate. As a child, my mom would drop my brother, sister and me at the Gateway Theater late Saturday afternoons. I remember being enraptured by Journey to the Center of the Earth there when I was nine years old. I walked over there this time and the very Gateway is still there! Inevitably, beach towns grow expontentially through the years and Ft. Lauderdale is no different. When I was a teenager, it was one of the first hugely popular spring break destinations but today the town has swelled with grand hotels, retail shops and restaurants. But all of that growth is not a negative to me. There is plenty to offer, day and night, and the nature is still absolutely spectacular. The ocean is clean, the rivers are sparkling with lights at night, the wilds of the Everglades are close by. We used to take air boats and go frogging on weekends there. And the Keys are a short drive away. So, I no longer live in my Home Town but I’m still in love with vibrant, charming Ft. Lauderdale. #nyad #ftlauderdale #ftlauderdalebeach #hometown
