Our movie NYAD screened as the kickoff of the Havana Film Festival, to a booming reception. Yes, the movie was big for Netflix, with much lauding last year, but this Cuba screening may have been the most special of all. Cuba such a deep and vital part of my personal story and the Cuba-US connection such a big issue in the film. Some of you question my spending money in Cuba, furthering support of the political regime. Trust me, I sometimes feel conflicted about that. But we go there to inspire the people to live their best lives and we are received as heroes who inspire. What could be bad about that? Standing on the shore, looking out to the northern horizon, summoned the moment of taking the leap of faith toward that faraway other shore. And also took me way back to age 9, when I stood on the FL shore looking south, when the dream of connecting our two countries first hit me. I met with hundreds of the elite teenage athletes and Bonnie gave a tennis clinic to their top players. We were hosted in a reception by our dear friend Commodore Jose Miguel Escrich at our start point, Marina Hemingway, where Bonnie and I visited the pool where we would test all my goggles the night before swimming out. Today’s Travel Tuesday a reminder to appreciate the grand nature right in our own backyards. I am so very lucky to have visited much of planet earth but I go just 45 mins from my home in Los Angeles, to visit my dear friend Candace, and we find great joy in exploring the mountains and canyons in her desert environment. Especially in winter, when the clarity of air and colors is astounding, we don’t have to travel to exotic lands to be enthralled in our environment. #traveltuesday #nyad
