Ellie and I are deep in the rehearsals for our tour together. It is always a fun but challenging dance to try and do a mixture of my songs from the Neighbors catalog, her solo songs, and now all of our songs together, especially with this new bunch from “Memory Bank”. I cannot get over the fact that our new record, Memory Bank, inspired by the number one memory bank investor…@drewholcombmusic’s dad, HAMP HOLCOMB came out on Hamp’s 70th birthday….AND>>>>>>> in keeping with tradition , he’s done it again and put some serious memories in the bank yesterday! Hamp and Nancy took all of us to Vegas to eat a great meal and to see the @eagles show at the sphere to celebrate their 70th birthdays !! Truly an epic night that ended with a total coincidental hummer limo ride back to the hotel 🤣🤣🤣 and a massive in room dining desert order coupled with boatloads of laughter to close it all out. Book the flight. Take the trip. Take the ones you love. Take a minute to just be present with them. Put on the record. Dance in the kitchen or wherever you are. Make the memories. I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to spend release day !! When in Minnesota, it’s imperative to acknowledge the American Bard, Bob Dylan. One of my favorites “Girl from the North Country”, sung in the stairwell of @thefitzgeraldtheatre in downtown St Paul. I used to sing this song when I was touring solo. Love singing it with @ellieholcomb.
It’s Ash Wednesday this week, which is a day to remember that from dust we come and to dust we’ll return. I’m learning more and more about as I get older. I used to think that this day was a real downer, and didn’t really grasp it, and as I’ve grown , suffered, fallen, failed, and found forgiveness and mercy and grace over and over again, I begin to understand the perspective that Ash Wednesday gives us. Our days are numbered, and we often make a mess of them, but there is this beautiful invitation to turn from our messes, our worry, our pain…the pain we have caused and the pain we have endured, to the Love of God, to the mercy of God, to the healing of God, and to the light. Praying that I will feel small in the best of ways this week, remembering that our mistakes , our wounds, our doubts, never have to be the end of the story. May we turn from our not enough to God’s more than enough this week and every week and find the sweet relief and joy of grace. #memorymonday
This summer we are taking our family on an RV trip all over New England. We are putting some money in the memory bank. Our plan is to visit national parks, getting involved in local service projects, and get in to all sorts of adventures together. And we figured we might as well play a few shows while we are in town! What does it mean for Christ to “dwell in your heart through faith” ? I LOVE the imagery of this. When I think of a dwelling, I think of somewhere cozy, with pictures on the wall, with a warm fire going, and with lots of room for people to gather and enjoy a meal or a conversation together. A dwelling place strikes me as a place where a LOT of life is lived, and this is the invitation of this verse, to remember that God dwells within us, so we never live any of our life alone. I love thinking about that just maybe….as I choose , even a little bit at a time to trust that I am loved and rescued and made on purpose for a purpose, that it makes more room for LOVE, for the living God to move in my heart, to rearrange the furniture when needed, to set a feast at the table for me, or to leave the lights on in my darkest nights…Oh God, help me to remember you dwell in my heart. #fightingwords #fightingwordfriday #fwf #christian #scripture #bibleverses #verseoftheday #inspiration #devotional #ellieholcomb #memorymondays
I love anything that zooms out for me, that gives me a broader and wider perspective than the here and now. This verse does that so beautifully, and I hope it will comfort you in the way it has comforted me. No matter who is in power or leadership in our country, in the world, we are invited to be loving to all God has made, to be a part of telling the beautiful story of how Love beats death, and how a kingdom is coming, where every tear will be wiped away from every eye. Well, welcome to my verse of 2025. It is my deepest desire to live my life rooted and grounded in Love. I took some time at the beginning of the year to look back and move through my calendar, week by week, to look at what brought life and what brought stress, to mark the moments when I felt consolation and comfort and the moments where I felt desolation and grief. It was powerful. What I came away with was this: THE MOST TRANSFORMATIVE practice in my life is carving out space and time to remember and rest in God’s love for me. There were seasons of deep deep sorrow and loss last year for us and for our community, but I noticed that when I was carving out time and space to intentionally listen and pour my heart out before the Lord, even the darkest nights of my year were accompanied by my dearest friend, Jesus. There was a hope that rooted deeper in my deepest grief when I simply poured my tears out in the direction of God. I found out, once again, that as deep as pain can take us, LOVE is a deeper well. My words for this year are ROOTED and GROUNDED because what I’ve found out in about 40 years of learning to follow Jesus, is that if I am grounding myself in the love of God, it changes the way I end up doing EVERYTHING else in my life. Lord, let it be true of my life, so that I’ll be filled up with Your love and so that when I’m wrung out…because I will be…my mess might be everywhere, but at least it will be all mixed up with Your love. Help me remember the height and depth and width and breadth of your Love, and let it transform every decision I make and every relationship I have.
