Our friends at @pilotflyingj invited us to play a show at the one and only Neyland Stadium at @utknoxville and we had the best time. This verse makes me wonder what perfect peace feels like? I think I’ve had glimpses of it, little tastes here and there, and you know what? SO often, I catch those glimpses in the hardest seasons of my life. I’m not sure why, but I think it might have something to do with coming to the end of my rope. I tend to lean heavy on myself. Can you relate? I mean, we’re raised in a self-help, pull yourself up by your bootstraps culture, so it’s no wonder I land there, but so often, when I am too tired to get myself up even out of bed, I end up in surrender. When I can’t go on, I find that I tend to pray more, in a last ditch effort to get me through whatever feels impossible in front of me, and guess what? It is SO often in these moments, when I have experienced something that felt like the “perfect peace” of God. It generally has nothing to do with any circumstances, but has greeted me mysteriously and beautifully in my weakest moments, in moments when it makes NO SENSE AT ALL to have any peace, I find myself more able to surrender and receive the peace. Oh God, may I learn to keep my mind steadfast on You, in the valley and on the mountaintops. When I’m at my lowest, or at my very best, help me to remember I never face anything alone. I sang this verse a few weeks ago, but was a part of a family camp this summer that invited every member at camp to memorize this whole passage, so here’s me trying to sing this beautiful invitation to redirect our hope. I love the challenge of trying to “expand the green pasture” on memory mondays. So often, I’m trying to fit just one or two verses into 30-90 seconds, but today, I found a way to sing a little more of this beautiful truth over you. I’m not really a runner. I just like to go fast, so if I ever go for a “run”, I’m mainly walking. My sister in law taught me to run really slow during the verses to songs, and then to sprint during choruses , and then in the bridge to take a breather and walk, and then to sprint to the end of the song. I love this and I laugh as people drive by me as I am flying down the street…because to them it may look like I’m training for the olympics, but it’s really just my 30 second burst of energy. : ) I love the imagery from this verse, and the way it reminds me that if we simply place our hope and set our minds on the Love of God, we will be fueled with a limitless supply of strength and endurance. I have known this to be true b/c I have found in seasons of deep exhaustion, even when I am forced to rest or slow down, I am met by a steady current of light and hope that keeps me going. Lord, may we put our hope in You, and may we be amazed by the way You send your strength and light and love to infuse us with a steady current to carry us when it feels like we can’t carry on alone. When I make a mistake or drop a ball, I often treat myself with a boatload of shame and impatience. This promise is such a relief to me. God isn’t shaking his head. God isn’t rushing us. Oh how I love the imagery of this verse. May we be people who bring good news…even in a world that is so full of a steady feed of disastrous stories portrayed on the news, may we also tell the redemptive narrative of our time. May we also proclaim hope to all. In the midst of political tension this election season, it is SO deeply helpful for me to remember, that God reigns. God’s not worried. I love how David reminds me that I never have to carry my complaints or burdens alone. The Psalms are honest and raw and real, and I love that they so often have given me permission to be human. I’ve discovered over the years that God is the BEST listener, so when my heart is troubled or I am frustrated to NO END with circumstances or others or myself, I don’t have to just let that frustration fester…there’s a kind and compassionate listener, who knows the way through every valley, hardship, and battle we’ll ever face. When I am full of doubts, frustrations, and when my soul feels turbulent and fretful, it is such a gift to know that I don’t have to carry any of that alone. I love how this verse reminds and invites me to pour it all out before the Lord. God’s love is the safest place I know to land, especially when my heart is troubled. When my spirit grows faint, God knows the way to refresh me. His love can hold all of my troubles AND point me to repentance if needed, to letting go of what isn’t good for me, and then, over and over again, His love leads me to restoration. Drew’s dad always says, “Put your money in the memory bank.” That’s what we did for the past 10 days , and I’m so grateful. From Idaho to see @drewholcombmusic play a festival with @thenationalparksband to Nantucket with our precious cousin @ccrews33 and her wonderful family, we packed it in. Hikes, gas station snacks , wake surfing, cold plunges, boat rides, sea plane, ice cream, huckleberry taffy, rollercoasters, travel cross the country to Nantucket beaches and lobsters and crabs and baby sharks , and sunsets that remind you what matters most . We missed our fierce and wonderfully joyful Bailey , AND we had an incredible time in one of the places she loved most. She taught us all to seize each day and to not take one thing for granted. Thankful for all the memories we have with her, and for the way we’ll live better having known her zest for life and big hearted love for all. Grateful for the memories we made as we traveled across the country with our crew too! This included our first ferry ride when our flights got canceled on Nantucket yesterday . Nothing like a wild few travel days to wrap up a vacay. Makin’ memories for sure. 😜 Much love to @ccrews33 and her husband Dan , who isn’t on insta, for hosting our family so graciously and taking us all over the island they all love! And happy birthday today to our precious Summer , Bailey’s little sister, who is equal parts joy and fun and generous and hilarious ! Thx to my wonderful @drewholcombmusic for being the captain of all our adventures . It’s so fun to do life with you. Blessings on all of you who are wrapping up summer and headed into a new season of school .
