Day 2 of Navratri celebrates Maa Brahmacharini, the embodiment of love, loyalty & wisdom.
She signifies penance, perseverance & spiritual strength, reminding us that true devotion means walking with courage even through the toughest paths.
The colour of the day is Red, symbolising power, passion & determination.
Today, I chose to wear my late mother, Dr. (Psy) Meeta Jaitly’s red saree… to channel her love & blessings to Maa Brahmacharini. This saree was once gifted by me to my mother, & she wore it with such pride. Often she would get different blouses designed for this same saree, yet always came back to it. I laughingly told her, “Maa, why are you not wearing the other sarees you bought?” She would just smile & say, “Red is my favourite.”
It was on her death bed, in the delirium of cancer medication, that she told me this is the saree she wants to wear when she next meets my fauji father, who had just passed away a few months earlier. She said she wanted to wear it for the Dining Out, the Army’s way of bidding farewell to an officer with honour, pride & dignity when he gets posted out from one #fauji base to another. My mother wished to meet my father again as though she was attending his final Dining Out, dressed in her favourite red saree.
After her death, when I first visited her home, the only things I took were her few sarees that she treasured deeply. It took me a lot to wear this, but today I needed her close to me more than ever. I am so glad I did.
If I could say something to Maa today I would say : Maa tumaar shaari pore dariye aachi, ektu ama ke dekhte aasho…
