This was quite the shock. You know why- I’d didn’t put myself up for this award. Paying fees to just renter the race. This is the way awards should be given- on merit- not on who paid the most in marketing. You read that right. #indiespirit awards (really?) Gotham both charge lots of money to even nominate your film and cast. Then there are so any other chargers to then get the voters to actually watch the movie. Not sure how you accept money for an awards contest and then don’t give the same attention to ALL films! But I digress- and this is about being celebrated for just the work. Even though the film and ALL my cast, @domenicklombardozzi @iamannabellasciorra @nick_v_cirillo @davidiacono – my editor, costume @caileybreneman PR @tvalexander__ composer @dodowndosia and the rest of the crew – as well as my producers @leslieowen_omg @3fttoss @chriscrokos ALL should have been recognized. Last but NOT least the performances by @odessaazion and my dear @emily_bader who presented the award to me- it is a CRIME these 2 haven’t been noticed this award season! Again- I’ll take the win and say a huge thank to @hollywoodcreativealliance for remembering me but as I said in the speech I share this with YOU alllll! The PEOPLe who have championed me and this film because they ACTUALLY care about human stories- yes STILL!! One win for us! @purvipadia and Harsh thank you for being the first ones on board in believing in me and @jesper for taking this ride. A now a little word from Kristen Stewart. I’ve been saying this for a loooonnng time. We’re at that point folks. Stand behind what you believe or lose it. Freedom of speech is MUCH more than what you may think and it’s been under attack for a long time. When you have one voice in control and picking what gets made, seen and funded that is an issue. It’s from a limited perspective and showing what they believe in and green light for YOU to see. It’s not a coincidence that you see the same things over and over. I’m making the exact film Kristen is speaking of. I’m asking my artist friends to come join me, I wrote the script will be directing am producing with another friend and will be starting in it. Why? To keep all my costs down not because I want to control the project. I believe we CAN tell stories that people actually want to see on small budgets with people who are RIGHT for the roles not the same few that bring money to projects. You guys don’t understand how controlled it all is. The amount of you who’ve asked me why I didn’t put @freshkillsmovie out there more or even worse never heard of it makes my head explode. And for all of you who said “I can’t wait to see what you do next” here it is. I’ve been waiting on 3 other projects all caught in the money pipeline begging to get made. Freedom of speech has never been more in jeopardy. I’ve been screaming this from the mountaintops for years when telling you all how hard it was to make Fresh Kills @freshkillsmovie – To make and distribute films for those that do not fit within the confines of the system for whatever reason- there is NO way forward. It’s all a way to control the narrative. And it’s been that way- but it’s getting worse. I’m making a micro budget feature that I wrote and I need you all to follow along. I will NOT be doing things as I’ve done with Fresh Kills – I’m taking you with me on the ENTIRE journey ! And it’s time to help fight with your dollars for your freedom of speech to see ALL Stories. Not just the chosen few. This powerful tool of storytelling is VITAL for us to see one another- our differences, how we are so much alike, it’s how we connect to others and ourselves.
