Today my #WCW is dedicated to award-winning #EnvironmentalJustice scholar and advocate, author, and professor of Sociology, Dr. Beverly L. Wright.
Dr. Wright is the founder and executive director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (@dscej), an organization committed to improving the lives of children and families harmed by #pollution and vulnerable to the #climate crisis along the Louisiana Mississippi River Chemical Corridor and the #GulfCoast Region.
Dr. Wright has conducted groundbreaking research in devalued, climate-affected communities in the Gulf Coast and around the U.S. for more than three decades. Although #policymakers are slow to act, she says the urgency of climate change will soon become undeniable, even for the nation’s most privileged.
“The thing about climate change is, in the end it affects all of us. People don’t care about it when it does not affect them, but there’s no running from climate change.”
We will not go back to business as usual. We choose our lives and our livelihoods. We choose each other and #WeMakeTheFuture with @doncheadle in partnership with @100isnow
In honor of #EarthDay, I’m thrilled that the boys, @markruffalo and @doncheadle will follow Mother Earth’s lead with a team rendition of @100isNow #WCW! Make sure you head to their pages and read about two more incredible women of color making the future we want for our communities, today. You know… we could have hundreds of artists celebrating frontline sheroes every week. Have anyone in mind?
But, first! Today my #WCW is Huey German-Wilson. A woman who walks it like she talks it! In her #Houston community she learned that her neighbors all had the same concerns – illegal dumping, poor infrastructure, safety, housing, jobs, and lack of economic opportunity. Huey’s strong ties to her community led her to run for city council in 2019. Although she didn’t win, Huey has made it her mission to hold elected officials accountable to the people they serve. #GreenNewDeal
Through her efforts with @ceer_houston, @lisc_hq and @universityofhouston to name a few, @hueygermanwilson continues to work on a more resilient community after Hurricane Harvey. Huey is dedicated to the students in the surrounding schools by ensuring that programs are kept alive to prepare them for the plethora of options in life along with keeping them engaged in community outreach. She is a pillar of strength and has been recognized by the @txblackcaucus for her tireless efforts. She’s awesome all around 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 “Let us harness the power of our ancestors to do the hard work in support of our community. Let us plant that seed. Together, we will watch it grow.” – Huey German-Wilson
Todays #WCW goes to climate advocate, and inaugural Catalyst Award winner, Annel Hernandez.
Annel Hernandez is the associate director of the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance, a nonprofit fighting for healthier and more just communities, and she was one of the key players in the passage of New York’s new climate law passed in July 2019, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, one of the most ambitious of its kind in the world.
“Frontline communities need more than a vague commitment for benefits, we need direct investments to catalyze our transition to the clean renewable energy economy.”

My #WCW today highlights #Minneapolis based food justice advocate LaDonna Redmond. @LaDonnaRedmond began her career in advocacy after facing limited access to nutritious, organic food in her native Chicago community.
LAdonna has successfully worked to get the Chicago Public Schools (@chipubschools) to change policies on #JunkFood, launched urban agriculture projects, started a community grocery store, and worked on federal farm policy to expand access to healthy food in low-income communities.
LaDonna continues to challenge food producers and consumers to examine the inequalities in the #FoodSystem and seek solutions that don’t negatively impact on the rights of #ImmigrantLaborers or people of color living in low-income communities. “What is needed is a new and vibrant food system, one that has at its core #equity and #justice. It will take all of us to create a vibrant, strong, economically viable environmentally sound and socially just food system.”
This week, my #WCW is dedicated to @TsedeyBetru. Tsedey’s experiences immigrating to the U.S., from Ethiopia, led her to pursue studies in Urban and Regional Development. Tsedey has dedicated her career to community organizing, and is heavily involved in rehabbing homes for low-income families, protecting our voting rights, helping immigrant girls succeed in school, and advancing an agenda of equitable economic growth in Atlanta.
As the Director of The Solutions Project grantee @pse_JustOpportunity, a group of economic development leaders from the private, nonprofit, and government sectors, @TsedeyBetru and her team are committed to exploring sustainable strategies and solutions for equitable economic opportunities for individuals and their families.
Follow @TsedeyBetru and @pse_JustOpportunity for opportunities to support their mission for economic inclusion. #togetherweprosper #equityforall #cleanpowertothepeople #justopportunity #justenergy #justhealth #Equitymatters #atlanta #100isNOW #MakeTheFutureWeWant
My #WCW this week goes to mother, wife, and climate revolutionary Brionte McCorkle. In her role as the executive director of Georgia Conservation Voters, @MBrionte works to elect pro-environment candidates and hold elected officials accountable for their actions and votes.
@MBrionte has spent her career fighting for a healthier, more vibrant future for all people and the planet, teaching people how to self organize and building strategic partnerships that protect the environment, advance racial equity, and grow #CivicEngagement.
Also, make sure to complete the #2020census
On 4/15 you can join @gcvoters live 80s Census Social and enjoy some classic hits while getting your questions answered. photo cred @syght

Today’s #WCW, Whitney Tome, is a wife, mom, a political strategist and a former professional ballerina out of Washington D.C.
Whitney is the #ExecutiveDirector of Green 2.0, a groundbreaking environmental #diversity initiative rooted in #equity and #inclusion. She also formerly led, defined, and crafted metrics and measures as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for @npcapics (National Parks Conservation Association).
Whitney has worked on several political campaigns, and environmental issues from oceans and fisheries to #NationalParks, and knows how to get the right people to the table. As a skilled facilitator, Whitney is able to walk into any room, identify systemic opportunities and challenges, develop a strategy in the moment, and leave everyone with action items and tasks to implement for their organizations. Whitney is keeping EVERYONE on their toes. (cause she’s a ballerina…get it?)
“Only when we hold seats of power will our communities not be burdened. Once we address this, then we can finally move towards policies and strategies that will fix a planet that continues to burn.”
