But then what is the purpose of reading?” This was the question a pupil once asked his Master. The Master didn’t reply at that time. After a few days, however, as he and the young pupil sat by a river, he said he was thirsty and asked the boy to get him some water using an old dirty old sieve that was there on the ground. The pupil flushed, as he knew it was a request without any logic. However, he couldn’t contradict his Master and, taken the sieve, he began to accomplish this absurd task. Every time he immersed the sieve in the river to pull up water to bring to his Master, he couldn’t take even a step towards him that already in the sieve there wasn’t even a drop left in the sieve. He tried and tried dozens of times but, although he tried to run faster from the shore to his Master, the water kept passing through all the sieve holes and was lost along the way. Tired, he sat next to the Master and said, ′′ I can’t get water with that sieve. Forgive me Maestro, it’s impossible and I failed in my job ′′ ′′ No, ‘ replied the old man smiling – you didn’t fail. Look at the sieve, now it’s good as new. The water, filtering from its holes has cleaned it up ′′ ′′ When you read books – the old Master continued – you are like a sieve and they are like river water ′′ ′′ It doesn’t matter if you can’t hold in your memory all the water that they make flow in you, because books anyway, with their ideas, emotions, feelings, knowledge, truth that you will find between the pages, will clean up your mind and spirit, and they will make you a better and renewed person. This is the purpose of reading “. from Anna Rita Montinaro,… ‘Respect the unpredictability of life my Souffle and have the faith and resilience to be the hero of your own story. I have criss crossed the subcontinent as a proud brand ambassador for @rado for many years. Events with @rado have taken me from Visakhapatnam to Ludhiana, from Jaipur to Patna to Kochi. Times have changed. We are grounded for the moment. Our relationship with time has altered. But something essential remains unaltered in its aspect. What is it? For many of us now, we have the time to reflect and figure out what’s important and what’s not. ‘Sometimes, “surrender” means giving up trying to understand, and becoming comfortable with not knowing. ~ Eckhart Tolle. Rainy day gazing in @drzya_ridhisuri A puff of wistfulness passed through me this morning. I wonder if the business of making movies and telling stories will change permanently. Perhaps we will become content with small happiness in modest doses and moments while the world around us continues it’s march towards entropy. That’s not a bad thing. We will adapt. We will accept. Perhaps, some of us will even wake up. Thank you @natasha.moor for sharing these bts from an as yet unreleased special project #stolenmoments “The mystical path is to return to our longing even when the pain of separation is excruciating. This is why longing is in the root of belonging. To be longing for what the soul hungers after, even when that hunger can not be satisfied, is to be truly alive. Paradoxically, it is in our deepest presence with those absences in our lives that we are returned to coherence.” (Excerpt from “Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home” by Toko-pa Turner) MUH @natasha.moor It really was an exceptional day. I haven’t had one of those in a while. It had previously been difficult for me to ask for help but dealing with a serious illness broke my wall of reserve. Look at it this way: if you don’t ask for help, how will you find it? if you aren’t open to receiving, how will you grow and harness the power of support? Cut to motherhood. It’s tough. It’s really, really tough on certain days. But I have no problem leaning on community and saying: I’m really not sure what I’m doing. I lead from heart, I allow my girls a lot of room to express and freestyle play but obviously there are times I need to lay down the law and rules of engagement. And if you have a toddler – or two- you will probably snort in recognition of how deviously defiant our angels can be. Cue @sparkwonder_ The wonderful Mona is a god send right now as she offers online consultations to address all and any parenting techniques or issues which might crop up. We were dealing with anarchic bedtime rituals (or rather lack of structure and rituals) and Mona swooped in (her cape wasn’t showing but I swear she wears one) to offer simple principles that have already transformed our night time experience. Mona thank you for dropping into our lives. Every mama needs a calm, empathetic eye like yours and I would sincerely encourage anyone who feels adrift, overwhelmed or simply needs a bit of extra support and guidance to book an online session. This is not a commercial endorsement just a share from one deliriously happy and relieved mama who is winging it, and not afraid to send out an S.O.S. every now and then. Posted @withregram • @janicepariat What is it about walking that makes it so amenable to thinking and writing? A lovely New Yorker article I read recently cites many reasons. For one, the changes to our chemistry—when we walk, our heart pumps faster, circulating more blood and oxygen to all our organs including the brain. Walking regularly also promotes new connections between brain cells, increases memory. The way we move our bodies further changes the nature of our thoughts, and vice versa. When we stroll, the pace of our feet naturally vacillates with our moods; at the same time, we can actively change the pace of our thoughts by deliberately walking more briskly or by slowing down. The article also says because we don’t have to devote much conscious effort to the act of walking, our attention is free to wander. Here a story, and there. A snippet of conversation, a memory, a domestic scene, an enigmatic opening line. Writing and walking are similar feats, it concludes, both physical and mental. Choosing a path through a city or forest, engages us in surveying our environment, constructing a mental map of the world, settling on a way forward, and translating that into footsteps. Likewise, writing allows us to review our internal landscape, plot a course through that mental terrain, and place our trail of thoughts on paper. All very good and interesting but what I missed in the article was this: how walking and writing are both dependant on the rhythms of our body. The beat of our feet, and the beat of our words. How they both involve the rhythm of our hearts and our breath. How these activities don’t take place out there but are located within us—language and the act of walking, and this for me might just be the most important connection of all. We shape them, and they shape us. Inextricable, each to each. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 📷 @steve3p_0 #writingandwalking #walkingisgoodforthesoul #walkingistherapy #walkingislife #benefitsofwalking #walkingadventures #walkingandwriting #writingcommunity #writinginspiration #writinglife #writingtips #writingcommunityofinstagram Posted @withregram • @kitu_60 A must read!
