I was both in awe and envious of the nominees. (How nervous? My anxiety translated into an ill advised trip to the spray tan booth. Never to be repeated) I know it’s tres gauche to share my ambition so baldly, but I hope to be a nominee one day. I don’t write for validation or mass appreciation, but If you don’t state it – believe it, sing it, invite it, quit rolling the dice but very deliberately set yourself on the path – how will desire manifest into reality? To invest more into doing fewer things, with greater depth. #nelsonbc Posted @withregram • @simakumar 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐀 𝐌𝐀𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐀 The thought of a masala dabba moving into the White House kitchen and the smell of cardamom & cloves wafting through these historic hallways and the kitchen counter stained with turmeric because @kamalaharris🥻will be moving in & inspiring a legion of brown & Black girls all over the world 🌎 to dream their dreams with eyes wide open and watch them come true is the Diwali miracle we’ve all been in need of — especially w/ statistics showing 55% of white women (many college educated) voted for Trump. On the same day as the passing of #SoumitraChatterjee my striking and strong willed Baro Pishi is no more. It’s an achingly sad day. But one filled with nostalgia and sweet, homegrown stories of my father’s elder sister and a woman whose resilience and determination I see as my own inheritance. A principled and urbane giant is no more. #soumitrachatterjee’s passing signifies the passing of an era. The actor/writer/poet/renaissance artist represented the ‘urban, intellectual Bengali’ and has been recognised as one one of the biggest stars of India’s parallel cinema. But it’s his performances, his quiet, deeply compassionate screen presence that opens up a gaping hole in cinema and my heart. Go in grace, sir. Thank you for sharing your gifts. Don’t let anyone define you. Don’t let circumstances, tragedy, wealth or even success define you. You are pure potential. You are unharvested honey. As Thoreau said: all good things are wild and free. Just like the new Vice President of the United States, you can step into a river, knowing that a chainlink of support will see you to the other side. Then it’s up to you to turn around and build a damn bridge for everyone. You know that odd feeling of nostalgia when looking at an image that reunites you with an experience you were not present for, you did not live through but that somehow, improbably, lives through you? Really looking forward to this one: Both a reunion with a beloved co-star and now writer and a chance to deep dive into #ClosetotheBone @doubledayca Posted @withregram • @beneaththesheetz Looking forward to chatting with @lisaraniray, my friend, double co-star, and all around talented artist and mama this week. Isn’t this is how we love each other out of aloneness. Did it happen? Ask me tomorrow. Not today. – Fiction work in progress #fictionisnevercancelled Thank you @mentalhealthwithsonali for sending a copy of your galvanising wake up call of a book. Everyone needs to understand how to identify and manage our triggers and ‘inner critics’ while re-examine irrational beliefs and emotional states in an empathetic way. Thank you @mentalhealthwithsonali for an absurdly well timed guide. Words from my soul sister. More than cameo, the narrative ends on an original song Tara wrote and performed for my wedding. Eternal gratitude for her presence in my life. Posted @withregram • @taramacleanmusic I’ve been waiting for this masterpiece to arrive!!! I can’t wait to dive into this. My beautiful sister @lisaraniray is one of the bravest and most powerful beings on earth and her writing is exquisite. She is a living goddess. I even have a little cameo in her story! Yay! #closetothebone @doubledayca All I wanted for Diwali is here 💓 I’ve been a disciple of Tibetan Buddhist practises for years. These treasures from @rolibooks – the best, most thoughtful coffee table publishers I’ve come across – will give me years of covetable pleasure (on the middle path, no less) Of course, you needn’t be a follower to relish the beauty and universal wisdom embedded in these books. Thank you @piyukapoor for sending #SacredVoices, the definitive collection of wisdom from #Nyingma masters, all the way to Canada. What a gorgeous and thorough effort to preserve and transmit the remarkable energy of the lineage. And I can’t say enough about this candid and intimate biography on H.H. The Dalai Lama that throws new light on a beloved world leader and spiritual master. Love and deep bows. @rolibooks #booksasgifts #booksastreasures Posted @withregram • @doubledayca We’re so happy to have CLOSE TO THE BONE out in the world! 🎉Lisa Ray is a writer, an actress, a cancer-survivor, a mother, and a woman who has already lived many lives. It’s on mine. Not only because it’s important to support #Canlit but I am partial to poets who free form into fiction (think @ocean_vuong @tishanidoshi @karunaezara and hey, @therealmargaretatwood just released a book of poetry so the muse flows both ways) Language is best when it’s a bit loose, not stifled. Poets – their orchard souls- just know how to gather life’s gestures in a single line. Posted @withregram • @cbcbooks Congratulations to Souvankham Thammavongsa, winner of the 2020 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her short story collection How to Pronounce Knife. • The $100,000 prize is the richest in Canadian literature. Thammavongsa is a Toronto writer and poet. She was born in the (Lao) Nong Khai refugee camp in Thailand and was raised and educated in Toronto. Her stories have won an O. Henry Award and appeared in Harper’s, Granta, The Paris Review and Noon. She has published four books of poetry, including 2019’s Cluster. How to Pronounce Knife, her first work of fiction, is a collection of idiosyncratic and diverse stories that explores the tragedy and humour of the daily lives of immigrants. CBC Books named Thammavongsa a 2020 writer to watch. “I’ve been writing poetry for 25 years. I wanted writing to feel new to me. Nobody was waiting for the fiction — I wanted to surprise people. I decided to try fiction and see how everything that I learned with poetry would translate into fiction,” Thammavongsa told CBC Books. • Head to cbcbooks.ca to read more about How to Pronounce Knife.
