What if we made transparency in fashion the hottest trend of 2023? And no, we don’t mean #freethenipple.
We’re talking about transparency in the supply chain. Shockingly, only 4% of brands share how many of their workers are being paid a living wage.
We must demand transparency of the wages and working conditions of the people who make our clothes. Without it, we cannot demand accountability.

I started my No New Clothes challenge in 2020 after learning about the horrific working conditions and environmental pollution behind the majority of the clothes we buy and wear. Since then I have come to see the importance of supporting the minority of brands who are doing it right. Oftentimes these brands are innovating new technologies in sustainable fibers, or employing artisans and rescuing culturally important traditions.
So I am grateful to @riise.world for being a thoughtfully curated retail platform that has done the hard work of sourcing truly sustainable brands for us. My cover story with RIISE is available to read now at the link in bio.

Over 70% of Nestlé’s emissions come from agricultural activities and their climate plan is filled with empty promises:
🚩 Instead of aiming to reduce production of foods based on dairy, meat and other highly-emitting agricultural commodities, Nestlé plans to increase sales by two-thirds between 2020 and 2030.
🚩 Planting trees seems to be Nestlés main tactic to offset emissions, but to achieve its target of net-zero by 2050 they would have to plant trees in at least 4.4 million hectares of land yearly — that’s more than the size of their home-country, Switzerland.
🚩 Nestlé has committed $1.2 billion dollars to promote “regenerative agriculture practices” — but that’s a meagre 1.5% of what it pays its shareholders in dividends.
🚩 There is no clear outline on how suppliers will transition to regenerative practices or who will pay for that to happen.
Many organisations profiting off extractive and exploitative practices are appropriating Indigenous knowledge to greewash their brand image. Their sole intention is to capitalise on the crisis. We must come together to hold them all accountable.

If my last few posts had you feeling depressed about the state of the “fashion industry” – I have the antidote for you! @luciannetonti’s book Sundressed will make you fall back in love with fashion by highlighting the fibers and farmers who are regenerating landscapes and reviving ancestral ways of making clothing. It is a wildly hopeful, exquisitely written love letter to fashion. It has completely transformed my relationship to the fibers we wear and the people that farm them. This book and movement is about a return to True Beauty, one rooted in justice for people and the planet. Highly recommended reading for anyone that wears clothes! ☀️

If I was going to NYFW to ask the question “Who made your clothes?” Then I had to make sure that I was going to be able to answer that question myself! I chose to wear these beautiful garments to highlight the beauty and skill involved in the production of artisan made clothing. Artisans are the true superstars of the fashion world, and the brands that I am wearing in this video work directly with them – in doing so these traditions are being kept alive. Some of these artisan communities are able to continue to practice their ancestral farming methods because they are supported by such work. My dream is for all of our new clothing needs to be met via these ethical, simplified supply chains. Congrats to these wonderful brands for leading the way. @zazi.vintage @zoubida.official @casa.nushki @kullvi_whims @stivalinewyork @valdesmonts_ @milena_silvano – They each have fascinating stories that I look forward to telling. As my friend @jeannedekroon says, it’s time to shift our gaze away from the model and onto the MAKERS of our clothes . And we must come back into reverence for and balance with the animals who nourish and clothe us and who can be such an important part of the movement to heal our soil. The topic of animal fibers (wool and leather specifically) is one that needs a more nuanced discussion . I want to dedicate a whole post to this but in the meantime I will say: I have the utmost respect for those who practice Ahimsa (Non-Violence) towards animals. I myself am *mostly* vegetarian. But, after careful consideration I cannot endorse plastic fibers as an alternative because these fibers are sourced from fossil fuels – the extraction of which is causing even more harm to animals and ecosystems. More to come on this later, but after studying the benefits of regenerative agriculture I have come to the conclusion that there can be a way of sourcing these fibers in a way that helps, not harms the earth – with maximum respect for the quality of life of the animal and minimal suffering. So vegans, keep please the comment section respectful. I am not your enemy! Also shout out to @poshmark where I sourced everything else!

And what a relief that we no longer have to fight and pull each others hair out for the cameras! (Though those scenes still crack me up) These two became real life sisters to me in so many ways.
