Over time, my relationship with Joanne grew so we’d stay in touch no matter where I was. With my career, I left home and spent a lot of time traveling the world, eventually settling in Toronto. A few years ago, I found out my god daughter Ayasha (Joanne’s daughter) wanted to move to the city. I was so excited! It was perfect timing because I had some space free up in my house, so she moved in with me and we lived together for three years. She was no longer the kid on her mom’s arm I knew so many years ago, and I watched her grow into a beautiful, smart and inspiring woman, artist and entrepreneur – killing it with her own tattoo business. I’m so grateful and proud to call Ayasha my goddaughter 🥰. Good Days out this Friday!
When I originally wrote “What I Wouldn’t Do” over a decade ago, it was the first time I started to share my mental wellness story publicly. It’s a song about love, and I think learning to love ourselves is our most important journey in life. I am so honoured to lend my song and voice to the @kidshelpphone Feel Out Loud campaign. Thank you to my friends @leelagildaymusic , Bob Ezrin and the 50 other artists who brought their voices together to ignite a movement behind youth mental wellness. I want to let young people know that it’s okay to not be okay, and there are caring, supportive people who are there for them, no judgement, no issue too big or too small. A few months ago, I surprised my goddaughter by performing a cover of her favourite SZA song at Massey Hall. What started out as a cute moment has turned into something much bigger for me. This song represents a bond between generations of women — it’s about CHOSEN family, and how life saving they can be to us. It’s a huge part of the story of my life, and I’m so excited to share that story with you, and release “Good Days” next Friday, August 18th. You can pre save it now 🤍

Back in my hometown @Sacredart_mamajotattoos owned the Luna Cafe, which was named for her daughter Ayasha Luna. And I remember my mom telling me “You have to go down there and bring your guitar.” And when I came down to the Luna Cafe, it was this amazing scene. There was Joanne working with Ayasha on her side and like, she was always wearing painter pants and her hair was always kind of knotty. There was all this art on the walls and she had the radio blasting with artists like Dead Can Dance, Ani DiFranco or Peter Gabriel. Here was the first time I tried food that wasn’t a burger and fries or steak and potatoes, I tried all these unique and amazing dishes. This place was a huge part of my life and a place of friendship, safety and creative inspiration. Over the years we’ve become a chosen family, and now both Cafe Luna and Ayasha Luna live not only in my heart but on my skin forever

Fast forward to 2022, @sza released an album we all love. Ayasha’s favourite song on it is “Good Days” and she asked me, “Nana, you would ever do a version of this just for me?” She probably thought I would record it on my phone for her, but I decided to learn the song and surprise her with it at @masseyhall. I told Ayasha that I was going to surprise her mom Jo with a song dedicated to her and that she had to be at the concert. But secretly we were setting her up! So come show night, Ayasha is trying to film her mom during the set, and at the same time, her best friend @samanthatully is filming her as I give a little speech and start playing “Good Days”.
