Having been outside for many years, this precious bird bath had accumulated a build up of dirt and moss along with cracks and losses. Using a steam cleaner on the stable areas it was cleaned, stabilised and filled. A tricky fix as the owner was keen to keep using the piece. It’s thirty years since I was a student @westdeancollege, but during my two year training I made lifelong friends and connections, and learnt invaluable skills I use today as a ceramics conservator in my own practice and on The Repair Shop. Next Friday 10 November, West Dean College are holding an open day – a great opportunity to see inside the workshops and facilities, talk to students and tutors and explore the beautiful grounds. Wonderful to work on this shattered piece of family history. Amanda Rayner, daughter of the famous agony Aunt Claire, brought in the smashed remains of her parents Golden Wedding Anniversary plate. Having been displayed in the heart of the family home for several years, it was accidentally broken. Sunday lunch? …. A recently restored dish in the distinctive style of Palissy ware. A 19th century term for ceramics produced in the style of the famous French potter Bernard Palissy 1510 – 1590 and much imitated in his own lifetime and especially in the 19th Century. This distinctive style is often characterised by three dimensional modelled snakes, fish, lizards, snails and aquatic life and can be a fun challenge to work on. I am constantly blown away by the beauty of colour, it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with ceramics. This week on my workbench whilst trying to find the right blue for colour matching I found myself looking into this jar of Phthalocyanine (Mona) Blue. Copper Phthalocyanine has been used since the 1930’s and it’s a synthetic organic pigment. Recently I came across this old photo taken at Uppark House in 1989, right at the beginning of my conservation career. This National Trust House, set high on the South Downs was devastated by fire in August 1989, after a workman’s blowtorch set fire to the roof as lead work was being repaired, only two days before the work was due to be completed. Many of the paintings and furniture were saved but lots was lost to the fire and much of the contents on the ground floor was crushed rather than burned. Once the fire was out and deemed safe the site was divided into a grid system and the ash and rubble from each section was salvaged and placed in 3,860 labelled dustbins. As a new conservation student at nearby West Dean College, along with conservation professionals and volunteers we picked through the bins, at times sieving the wet sludge and ash, looking for any fragments that could be identified and saved. This system enabled even the tiniest of pieces to be salvaged. In the background you can see the remains of the devastated house. Image 2 shows decorative plaster being salvaged and cleaned. The decision was made to fully restored the house, during this work many dying craft techniques had to be re learned. This hand painted plate was originally made as part of an exhibition for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887. Painted by Helen’s great, grandfather it has been cherished by the family for many generations, even in its damaged condition.
