This ancient, Chinese terracotta figure arrived in such a damaged and fragile condition unable to stand having been broken in a move. It’s fragile condition required careful conservation and with the help of @stevefletcher.clocks we were able to remount the stabilised and repaired figure. Occasionally we have to get creative working out the best ways to support objects during the conservation process. This beautiful painted plaster maquette of an ice dancer from the 1930’s had extensive damage across the supporting leg and signs of previous restoration. H 45 cm Using a custom adjustable frame, made for us by @david_burville_burvilleorgans and old clock weights the object was safely encased during treatment. A real challenge on tonight’s Repair Shop, a sculpted plaster head with a large section missing along with the original wooden base. It was one that required me to dig deep into my years of experience to find a treatment that would look good but also have the strength to support the structure of the sculptural head. I couldn’t have done it without the help of @williamkirkrestoration who carved an exact replica of the missing original base and helped devise a plan to bond the two sections together. We only had two poor quality pictures to work from but a happy outcome when the sculpture was revealed to Martin and it was just as he had remembered it as a boy. In the studio today, this large terracotta head of David with lovely patina. Broken into several pieces the damaged sections were bonded back together after cleaning and consolidation. Due to the size and weight of this piece it required support whilst curing, so using soft, strong but stretchy materials we chose bandages and tights. David has probably looked better! …. An original artwork damaged in transit travelling from Buenos Aries to London and brought into The Repair Shop by the artists daughter Maria. A beautiful memento of her life in Argentina. A tricky balancing act for myself and Dom, how to repair and secure this heavy sculpture without modifying the base and interfering with the artist’s intent. Working together a solution was found and Maria’s reaction was just a joy to witness. It’s a huge privilege helping people through our work on The Repair Shop and tonight’s episode is no exception. The weight of responsibility with baby David’s footprints was unbelievable. His parents visited the barn bringing his precious footprints and asking for our help. Cast in a synthetic, air drying clay and for no obvious reason they were breaking apart. This precious memento needed to be saved but every unique mark had to be preserved requiring extreme care to be taken. The synthetic clay was stabilised and the intrusive cracks filled and smoothed. We’ve said it before but the whole team behind the making of The Repair Shop are a super, talented bunch. This image shows the care and trust involved in getting those incredible shots capturing our process. Working in collaboration, we are able to show how we achieve the repairs and restorations. It can be tricky with some techniques having to be captured first time round due to the types of adhesives or retouching materials being used, but everything you see is real! On today’s program I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jane a wonderfully talented potter. What a joy to hear her describe her working techniques and I was able to help repair one of the first pieces that she made at the start of her career.
