Today I was delighted to be asked to open the new West Dean College London campus, an exciting new hub of making and creativity in central London. Arriving in London’s Bloomsbury from the Sussex countryside, the world-renowned college described as a “Hogwarts for making” invites Londoners to get creative with an eclectic range of over 100 one-day, two-day and weekend courses across the arts, craft, design and conservation to choose from. West Dean College was the place that my Conservation journey began, so it’s well worth a look, who knows where it might take you ….. I love glass and I love colour! This Venetian millefiori glass lamp was a beautiful combination of both but it arrived at The Repair Shop in dreadful condition, just about holding together with old tape and failing adhesives. I could immediately see its potential and recognise what a beautiful object it had been. It was much loved and still in daily use despite its precarious condition. This was a wonderful challenge and tested my glass conservation skills. The glass was dismantled, cleaned and reassembled and once put back together was stable and safe to use, hopefully for many more years to come. With thanks to #markstucky our electronics whizz who helped to safely rewire the lamp despite its fragile condition. Did you catch the new series and what did you think? A quick visit to London …. First stop The Glass Heart exhibition at Two Temple Place. This beautiful abstract piece of stained glass 1965 – 66 by John Piper caught my eye. I’m guessing that this glamorous German horse rider has just swept in from a ride in the Bavarian Forests … A much loved, broken family heirloom has come into the studio to be repaired. This piece has a small vase/pocket at the rear into which tapers and spills could be placed, these were used for transferring fire to light a candle or pipe. Usually kept on a mantelpiece, Spill vases come in all sorts of shapes and designs. Damaged many years ago it has been treasured even in its broken condition. A very special Poppy from the Tower of London 2014 installation, commemorating the centenary of WW1. Each of the 888,246 Poppies that filled the moat surrounding the Tower represents the lost lives of British soldiers. I have worked on many of these precious Poppies over the years and each has a unique and special story. Emerging through the steam, this beautiful Dresden parrot. Taking advantage of a break in the rain I decided clean some studio objects in the early morning light. This particular piece was caked in years of dirt and nicotine, transformed using the steam cleaner to jet away the dirt in a controlled manner and revealing the true colours and details. A masterpiece restored, an artist’s legacy revived. This exquisite etched glass artwork by John Hutton stands as a testament to his skill and vision. With its intricate details and timeless beauty, it captivates the senses. Hutton 1906 – 1978, best known for his post war work at Coventry Cathedral “Screen of Saints and Angels”, 66 larger-than-life figures that took ten years to create and is well worth a visit, leaves a lasting impression through his art. This glass panel, once broken in two, now restored, reminds us of the power of restoration and resilience. Our Conservation studio was lucky enough to be asked to work on this piece after the owner decided to have the old DIY repair dismantled and professionally conserved. Lovely to see John and his ceramic German Shepherd dog, Belka. This project proved tricky to dismantle, the dog was made of a glazed earthenware and as such a soft body with a glassy, glazed finish that would have been easy to chip. With patience and past experience to call upon, the previous repair eventually came apart, allowing me to move forward and complete the restoration. It was an absolute pleasure to return to West Dean College earlier this Summer and film in the beautiful grounds with Markus Dell. I was keen to highlight the the work that goes on at the college offering world class conservation courses in a unique and supportive learning environment. It’s thirty years since I was a student here but during my two year training I made lifelong friends and connections. When I was asked to appear on the BBC programme The Repair Shop as a Ceramics Conservator seven years ago, I said yes because I knew it was filmed right next to my old college and I still have strong connections with this place. If you are interested in a career in conservation then there are many different disciplines to choose from, ceramics just being one. West Dean College offer’s you a foundation to start your career from.
