#MarriageMonday I will never forget something Judah shared with me during a time when he was feeling emotionally and physically fatigued. It was a full season; he was flying between Seattle and LA every week and preaching 7 times every Sunday. We were laying in bed on a Saturday night and he confessed that he didn’t know if he could get up to preach the next day, but he felt like he couldn’t “pull himself out of the game.” In that moment I called an audible by making a simple phone call to find someone else to preach (one of the advantages of working together). I tell this story because I believe spouses can be each other’s greatest assets in guarding their mental health. We need to have open, honest communication with each other and listen when someone says they are struggling. We need to be vulnerable to admit when we need help. Sometimes we need to help our spouse get a practical plan toward healing. One of the beautiful benefits of marriage is that we can be there for each other. As a wise man once said, “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help.”
#MarriageMonday The google definition of stuck in a rut made me laugh, “In a settled or established habit or course of action, especially a boring one.” Does that ever feel like marriage in these winter months? Because Judah’s and my personalities are so opposite it seems like we are always pulling for either more routine or more adventure (you can guess who is pulling which way!!). But I have to admit -even though i love my routines mixing things up and bringing some adventure helps keep us from a boring rut. Adventure doesn’t have to be exotic-trying a new board game or cooking a new recipe, driving to a new spot on an afternoon drive or dancing or even reading a book together could all keep us from a boring rut. Is there anything new you could do this week to keep out of a rut?

#MarriageMonday Since the goal for marriage is to last a lifetime, it seems wise to expect many different seasons during the course of a marriage. Some seasons we can see coming and plan for them; with our baby girl in high school we know an empty nest season is coming. Other seasons are impossible to foresee. There was no way I could know in July of 2020 I would get a phone call that my Dad was being rushed to the hospital with a ruptured brain aneurysm. I think we often underestimate the power of resiliency and adaptability for healthy marriages. This week on our podcast, In Good Faith, Judah and I talked through the difficult seasons of our parents declining health really for the first time, and were surprised at some of the things that came out! Sharing these types of meaningful conversations with your spouse, even sometimes in “what if” scenarios can go a long way in helping us adapt to the changing seasons of marriage.
