For most things in life, less is more. That includes video recording! If you’re going to highlight your design with a video, fewer, SLOWER transitions are so much better. Are you a good swimmer? Are your kiddos? It’s hard to believe these are the same kids who needed floaties and pep talks before hopping in the water. Now they’re swimming pros, and one is even a regular surfer! I will never regret all of the swimming lessons and water safety courses. Some parents worry about the day their kids start driving. I think about the day these two are driving a boat without me! We will always live near the ocean (whether U.S. or abroad), so comfort with and in water is a big deal around here. A tropical vacay is in order, so this teal water is just a tease of what’s to come!
A tuxedo kitchen is one of my favorite interior design looks. It’s just so timeless! The bright uppers open up the space and add a touch of sophistication. This Can Camino tuxedo kitchen definitely helped provide an update to an otherwise dated feature, and it’s only enhanced by a gorgeous chandelier. Can you guess why I’m in love with it? My kids don’t get everything they ask for. But when they typically request something that has personal meaning to them, I try to oblige. Kingsley, my oldest, wanted graffiti in his new bedroom, and I thought it was a great way to incorporate some empowering art that he could see every day. “Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.” – unknown This is never more true than when you are in the middle of a renovation or remodel. Seeing the renderings of our rooms always helps keep me motivated while the real thing is in progress. But OMG is waiting on the finished product tough at times! This room is almost complete, and it’s even more amazing in person than the rendering. The distance between a model and the result is measured in patience and trust. If you’re planning to take on a significant project like ours, buckle up and get ready to wait. The end will definitely be worth it!

As many of you know, I spend a great deal of time advocating for the girls and women in Kenya—both in the field (on the actual continent of Africa) and here in the States through various fundraising and educational efforts. A short time ago we took our cause to Capitol Hill where we laid everything before the lawmakers of our country. We told them the firsthand stories of the girls in single digits who were forced to undergo FGM and be married as children. We will NOT stop until every girl has the opportunity to live a life free of this harmful practice. My heart beats for these young women. Did you catch last week’s blog on using animal print in interior design? I find that people either love animal print, or they struggle with how to use it in sophisticated ways. Well, maybe it can’t literally take you to your favorite island, but it definitely brings the tropical vibes to any space. Listen to me: unless you’re THEE actually Barbie or Ken, a bright, neon-pink colorscape like this DIYer’s room is never necessary. I would get it more (but only by a hair) if it was done just “for the ‘Gram.” EVEN if it was your favorite color would it not be necessary to have such a pink-tastic room. I absolutely LOVE teal, and I’d think twice about creating a “nothing but teal decor” type space. What about you, though? Could you do a room completely in your favorite color? If you visit Ibiza, you’ll likely see the red cherry logo or sculptures *somewhere*. The famous cherries are all about Pacha Ibiza (@pachaofficial) , one of the most well known nightclubs in the area. People have always given me strange looks when I tell them I regularly take my little kids to Ibiza. I think they picture non stop partying with nothing but scantily-clad adults. Well, there’s a bit of that too. However, one of the things I’ve always loved about Ibiza is how kid-friendly the island is! We go to dinner and the DJ is playing, the kids are dancing and the adults are loving life. Ibiza is a sort of choose-your-own-adventure kind of getaway, and we always have an amazing time. Tapping into the importance of “home” is what I do as a designer. Partnering with @habitatforhumanity, an organization that understands home ownership is the key to so many families’ stability and inter-generational wealth, was organic. #HomeIsTheKey is all about the impact affordable housing has on building equity in wealth, education, health, and opportunity through homeownership! That’s something we can all get behind. The chance to own a home is life-changing, and there’s no better feeling than making your space feel tailored to your lifestyle. I’m in the process of completing my own home, and I thought I’d give you a few tips on decorating your spaces without exorbitant price tags. First, prioritize. Need a space for the kids more than a dining room? Nothing wrong with that! The decisions you make should reflect your needs and wants. Next, nix perfection! If you don’t have all the furniture when you first move in, don’t be afraid to improvise with things like baskets, rolling racks or hampers for storage. Finally, lean into colors that bring out the best in your space and the way you feel when you interact with it! For me, that’s using fun prints and patterns with wallpaper and fabrics.
